You check traffic before leaving, but still hit rush hour. You circle a parking garage for ten minutes looking for a spot, then forget which level you parked on when you return. You leave earlier than necessary because you're guessing how long the trip takes instead of knowing.
These are the most common travel headaches, and most people don't realize Google Maps can solve all three. Beyond basic turn-by-turn directions, Maps has features that tell you exactly when to leave based on live traffic, show parking options before you arrive, and drop a pin so you can navigate back to your car later.
Here are three Google Maps features that eliminate the guesswork, stress, and wasted time from everyday travel.
Article continues below1. Set a reminder to leave (and arrive on time)
Google Maps can tell you exactly when to leave based on real-time traffic conditions. Instead of setting a random alarm or guessing, Maps factors in current traffic patterns and notifies you when it's time to go.
To set this up, search for your destination and tap "Directions." Then tap the three-dot menu next to your starting point and select "Set a reminder to leave."
Choose either a "leave-by" time (when you want to depart) or an "arrive-by" time (when you need to be there). Google Maps monitors live traffic and sends a notification when it's time to leave based on current conditions.
If traffic is light, Maps tells you to leave later. If an accident causes delays, it tells you to leave earlier. You're not guessing or padding your schedule with unnecessary buffer time. This is especially useful for appointments, flights, or events where being late isn't an option.
2. Check parking before you arrive
Arriving at a destination and discovering parking is full, expensive, or nonexistent creates immediate stress. Google Maps shows parking options near your destination before you leave, including garages, lots, street parking, and basic pricing information where available.
First, search for your destination. Once the map centers on it, look for the "Parking" option in the suggestions or tap "More" to find it.
Maps displays nearby parking garages and lots with their names, addresses, and phone numbers. Some listings include websites where you can check real-time availability and pricing. If you see an "Ask" button, you can ask Gemini about parking options and it will provide additional details.
For busy areas like shopping centers, downtown districts, or event venues, checking parking ahead saves the frustration of circling aimlessly hoping to find a spot.
3. Save your parking location
Google Maps also lets you drop a pin at your parking spot so you can navigate back to it later. It's faster and more reliable than trying to remember a level number or landmark.
After parking, open Google Maps and tap the blue dot that shows your current location and select "Save parking."
Maps drops a pin at your exact location. When you're ready to return to your car, open Maps, find the saved parking pin, and tap "Directions." Maps navigates you back to your car.
This is great because you don't need to remember anything. Maps remembers for you. This is essential in multi-level garages, large parking lots, unfamiliar areas, or anywhere you're parking temporarily and won't remember the location hours later.
The pin stays active until you manually remove it, so if you park somewhere for multiple days (like at an airport), the location remains saved the entire time.
