‘The show is figuratively darker and literally darker’: Harold Perrineau on how ‘From’ season 4 leans further into psychological horror

“From” is one of the most gripping shows in recent years, and soon we’ll be returning to the nightmares and mysteries of Fromville. With “Lost” veterans Jack Bender and Jeff Pinkner behind the scenes, mystery and intrigue have always been central to the show’s DNA. Harold Perrineau, who also starred in “Lost,” finds himself in a very different kind of nightmare here, where Boyd is pushed to his limits in a town no one can escape.

If you’re new to “From,” the series follows the residents of a mysterious town with no way out, where every night brings deadly, otherworldly creatures that emerge from the surrounding forest. The survivors must try to uncover the town’s secrets and find a way home, all while being slowly and relentlessly psychologically tormented.

Already the most-watched show in MGM+ history and renewed for a fifth and final season, “From” season 4 is one to watch when it premieres on April 19.

Perrineau plays Boyd Stevens in “From,” a former military officer and de facto sheriff of the nightmarish town. He becomes the community’s moral centre and reluctant leader, using his experience, instinct, and compassion to protect the residents while trying to maintain order amid escalating chaos and terror.

I had the chance to sit down with Perrineau to talk about the darker and heavier tone in “From” season 4, and how that emotional weight carried into his portrayal of the character this time around.

‘There was a darkness to it’

During the interview, I asked Perrineau if the darker tone following season 3’s shocking ending influenced how he approached Boyd in season 4.

“I think that you can’t avoid it. The show is figuratively and literally darker. There are things happening with the town that are just … yeah. There was a weight to it, a darkness to it, a heaviness that you have to take on,” he explained. “That’s the only way to be of service to the script, because it really is pretty gruesome.”

He didn’t hold back when describing the town’s evolution either: “The town is being really awful. It’s brutal and actually cruel.”

After portraying a wide range of emotionally grounded and authoritative figures across both film and TV, Perrineau is no stranger to characters who carry moral weight under pressure. From “Lost” to “The Matrix Reloaded” and “Oz,” Perrineau has often explored roles defined by survival and leadership. But Boyd in “From” is a different kind of challenge entirely. He’s a man constantly under siege, forced to maintain control in a town that is increasingly cruel, chaotic, and psychologically destabilizing.

Perrineau added that even fan theories don’t fully capture how disorienting the new season becomes. “I saw a theory out there somewhere — somebody’s like, ‘everything happens in the day’ … I’m like, oh buddy, you just hang on.”

“From” season 4 continues the residents’ struggle in the mysterious, nightmarish town where escape remains impossible. As new revelations about the Man in Yellow and the town’s dark origins surface, Boyd and the others face escalating horrors that threaten their sanity, survival, and hope of ever getting home.

“From” season 4 is set to premiere on Sunday, April 19, 2026, on MGM+. After that, new episodes arrive weekly on Sundays through to the series finale on June 28.
