The ultimate middle sister, Mary Bennet, finally gets to shine. This witty spin on “Pride and Prejudice” shifts the spotlight to Mary (Ella Bruccoleri), whose chief crime is being neither as beautiful as Jane or as witty as Elizabeth in a marriage-obsessed world. The first episodes replay familiar beats from Mary’s sidelined perspective, before sending her beyond Meryton for something astonishing: a life. Bruccoleri’s quietly aching performance anchors the BBC series, which is a must-watch for Jane Austen fans. — Kelly Woo
