The cost of streaming in 2026 feels pretty dismal compared to what many of us were paying just five years ago. With prices creeping up across multiple platforms, it’s no longer realistic to subscribe to every major service without spending a small fortune each month. That’s where free streaming services come in handy, especially if you’re trying to cut down on costs without completely giving up your movie nights.

While free platforms like Tubi or Pluto TV may not always have the most expansive libraries, there are still plenty of underrated flicks worth checking out if you know where to look. In fact, some viewers may not even realize that Prime Video integrated Freevee into its wider platform, meaning you can access free, ad-supported movies directly within Prime Video itself. In some cases, this even makes it possible to rethink whether a full Prime membership is necessary at all.

So, if you’re a thriller fan looking for some gripping movies to watch this week without paying a cent, here are five of the best thriller flicks available on the top free streaming services.

‘Stillwater’ (2021)

Matt Damon is no stranger to the thriller genre, which works in the film’s favor as he moves comfortably through its grounded tone. “Stillwater” is essentially a slow-burn character study, exploring the idea of a second chance at fatherhood, and whether finding the truth actually brings peace or if the consequences outweigh the closure. This thriller runs at around two and a half hours, so it’s not a quick watch, but the film does reward viewers willing to settle in for the journey.

“Stillwater” follows Bill Baker, an unemployed oil-rig worker from Oklahoma who travels to Marseille, France to visit his estranged daughter Allison (Abigail Breslin), who is serving a nine-year prison sentence for a murder she claims she didn’t commit. Struggling with language barriers and unfamiliar surroundings, Bill becomes determined to help her case after she presents him with a potential new lead that could point to another suspect. His search for answers takes him through different parts of Marseille, where he tries to piece together fragmented clues.

‘Green Room’ (2015)

No movie has ever gotten under my skin quite like “Green Room.” This dark thriller is one of the most intense survival films I’ve ever watched. It doesn’t waste time on world-building outside of the immediate threat, which makes it feel incredibly claustrophobic and intense from beginning to end. While it’s a violent film with some seriously stomach-churning moments, it’s also visually visceral, drenched in a sickly green color palette that fits its title. Plus, it marks a chilling departure for Patrick Stewart from his more heroic roles.

“Green Room” sees a struggling punk band, the Ain’t Rights, accepting a last-minute gig at a remote club in the Pacific Northwest. After their set, they accidentally witness a shocking crime backstage at the venue, which is run by a violent extremist group. The club owner, Darcy (Patrick Stewart), and his men immediately lock the band inside a small green room to contain the situation and prevent them from leaving or calling for help. The band is forced to improvise a way out while trapped in increasingly dangerous conditions.

‘Shutter Island’ (2010)

I think even non-thriller fans would know about “Shutter Island,” a psychological thriller directed by Martin Scorsese, marking his fourth collaboration with Leonardo DiCaprio. As a fun fact, they both studied 1940s “zombie movies” and the works of Val Lewton to capture a specific type of atmospheric, low-level dread that was popular in mid-century cinema. This kind of research paid off, because “Shutter Island” is a dark, foreboding investigation story with one of the most iconic twists.

“Shutter Island” centers on U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio), who travels with his partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) to a remote island to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Ashecliffe Hospital, a facility for the criminally insane. Upon arrival, they begin questioning staff and searching the island for clues, including restricted areas and a nearby lighthouse. During the investigation, Teddy becomes increasingly unsettled by inconsistencies in what he’s told and experiences disturbing visions connected to his past.

‘All the Old Knives’ (2022)

Now we’re venturing into classic espionage thriller territory with “All the Old Knives.” This Prime Video original is based on the novel of the same name, and very much feels like a throwback to the mature, romantic spy dramas of the 80s and 90s. The film is structured around an intense dinner between two former lovers and colleagues, constantly shifting between present-day and flashbacks. “All the Old Knives” perfectly nails slow-burn suspense with its compelling storytelling structure.

CIA operative Henry Pelham (Chris Pine) is assigned to re-examine a terrorist hijacking that took place years earlier after new evidence suggests there may have been a leak within his former Vienna station. His investigation leads him to reconnect with Celia Harrison (Thandiwe Newton), a former colleague and past lover who left the agency shortly after the incident. Over the course of a series of meetings and interviews, Henry pieces together events from the day of the attack, questioning what really happened and who may have been involved.

‘Crawl’ (2019)

I have a soft spot for disaster movies, and when I discover one I like, it ends up on my yearly rewatch list. That’s the case with “Crawl,” a survival thriller centered on deadly alligators appearing in floodwaters. It strips away any unnecessary subplots and instead focuses entirely on the intense survival scenario at its core. Even though it was produced (not directed) by Sam Raimi, it still carries his DNA, feeling relentless, inventive, and like a genuine crowd-pleaser for genre fans.

“Crawl” follows Haley Keller (Kaya Scodelario), a competitive swimmer who ignores evacuation orders when a Category 5 hurricane hits her Florida hometown. She heads into the storm to find her estranged father Dave (Barry Pepper) at their old family house. When she reaches him, she discovers he is badly injured and trapped inside a crawl space as floodwaters rapidly rise around them. They soon realize the house is being invaded by aggressive alligators that have entered through the flooding.
