New releases on Netflix: 7 shows and movies you need to watch this week
Don't miss 'The Woman in Cabin 10,' 'Boots' and more

Netflix is adding 19 new shows and movies to the streaming service this week. Of those 19, though, there's a clear top pick for the must-watch movie of the week, and that's "The Woman in Cabin 10." Starring Natalie Portman, this psychological thriller is a gripping, star-studded affair also featuring Guy Pearce and Hannah Waddingham, and you won't want to miss it.
It's not the only show or movie to keep an eye on this week, though. "Boots" is a new comedy-drama series starring Miles Heizer as a closeted Marine recruit in the 1990s when being gay in the military was still illegal. But as serious as that premise sounds, don't worry. This show is as irreverent as it is emotionally deep.

New on Netflix this week: Top picks
‘The Woman in Cabin 10’
As I already mentioned, "The Woman in Cabin 10" stars Natalie Portman. She plays journalist Laura Blacklock, and she's on what should be a simple, pleasant, enjoyable cruise with some of the world's richest and most powerful people. But things quickly take a turn once she sees a woman from Cabin 10 thrown overboard.
Except, there's no woman in Cabin 10. Everyone is accounted for, or so the ship's captain says. Still, Laura's convinced she witnessed a murder, and everyone else is convinced she's crazy. Will that cause her to actually go insane? You'll have to watch to find out.

'Boots'
Being a kid is hard enough. Being a closeted gay man can be even harder. But a closeted gay Marine recruit in 1990? That's not just difficult; it's downright illegal.
Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips.
That's the premise behind "Boots," a new comedy-drama series based on former US Marine Greg Cope White’s memoir "The Pink Marine." It stars Miles Heizer as the closeted Cameron Cope and Liam Oh as his best friend and the son of a decorated Marine Corps veteran. The eight one-hour episodes follow them as they navigate boot camp and all the trials that come with it, both physical and mental. Don't worry though, the tone of the trailer feels hopeful, even if there's plenty of drama.
Watch on Netflix starting Oct. 9
'Victoria Beckham'
David Beckham documentaries are so 2023. This week, it's all about Victoria Beckham, aka "Posh" Spice. Sure, she's known for being Mrs. David Beckham as well, but her accomplishments are far beyond being married to a famous footballer.
In "Victoria Beckham," director Nadia Hallgren and the team behind the Emmy-winning "Beckham" will explore the pop star-turned-fashion icon's life from her early years and her rise to fame with the Spice Girls, her career as a fashionista, and (of course) her high-profile relationship with David Beckham. The three-part documentary is centered around her preparations for an ambitious runway show at Paris Fashion Week, and features interviews with Tom Ford, Roland Mouret, Anna Wintour, Eva Longoria and more.

'My Father, the BTK Killer'
Look, plenty of people have "daddy issues." That's nothing new. But most people don't need to come to grips with the revelation that their father is not just a serial killer, but one of the most notorious serial killers in U.S. history.
In "My Father, the BTK Killer," Kerri Rawson examines exactly that horrifying scenario, which for her played out in 2005, when her dad, Dennis Rader, was arrested on his lunch break. The seemingly unassuming man of the community was found to be the BTK Killer, who was ultimately found responsible for at least 10 murders. This true crime documentary not only revisits the murders that terrorized Wichita, Kansas, but unpacks Rawson's perspective on how these murders still impact her today.

'True Haunting'
It's a big week for eerie documentaries on Netflix. Not only do you have "My Father, the BTK Killer," but you also have "True Haunting," a new series from legendary horror director James Wan. In this show, the man behind the "Saw," "Insidious," and "The Conjuring" franchises brings to Netflix a show that combines immersive dramatizations and present-day interviews to explore real-life paranormal encounters from the viewpoint of those who allegedly lived them.
So if you're not a fan of documentaries, don't feel like you should skip this one. If you like documentaries, dramas, or horror, "True Haunting" has something for you.
Watch on Netflix starting Oct. 7
'Néro the Assassin'
"Néro the Assassin" (or "Néro") follows Pio Marmaï as the titular assassin. Set in 16th-century France, Néro is a cynical killer for hire, whose cynicism is rewarded when his former master betrays him.
Now, Néro has a choice to make. He can save those closest to him, including his daughter Perla, who was raised as an orphan apart from Néro. Or, he can save the world from ruthless enemies in a France that is suffering from historic drought and increasing social tensions. Complicating things is Perla's choice to become a ruthless assassin like her father, which is going to make keeping her safe a difficult task for our titular killer.

'Old Money'
You wouldn't know it unless you're someone like me who scours the Netflix release calendar on a regular basis, but there's a surprising amount of original Turkish content on the platform. Well ... I suppose you'd know if you're from Türkiye or speak Turkish, but I digress.
This week, a new Turkish series makes its debut on the streaming service. "Old Money" stars Engin Akyürek and Aslı Enver as Osman and Nihal. The former came from nothing to build wealth and power on his own, while the latter comes from a family built on generational wealth. These two are locked in a battle of wits and diplomacy, but can either of them win once they start to fall for each other? You'll have to watch "Old Money" to find out.

Together, this ensemble navigates the literal and metaphorical landmines of boot camp, forging unlikely bonds and discovering their true selves in an environment designed to push them to their limits.
