I’m a fitness editor who has been practicing Pilates for over a decade, so I know what I’m looking for when it comes to the perfect gear. Whether you’re a reformer Pilates fan or happiest on the mat, here are the items I swear by for sculpting a strong core.
Pilates is booming right now, and for good reason — it’s an incredible workout, and targets the deep transverse abdominis muscles from start to finish. I’ve used Pilates to work on my balance and get to the start line of six marathons injury-free, when I was pregnant, and to rebuild my core and pelvic floor following the birth of my son.
As with all workouts, the right gear is essential. Most studios require you to wear Pilates socks if you’re using a reformer. If you’re practicing from home, a good exercise mat is a must. Plus, when it comes to enhancing your practice, the right Pilates accessories can add intensity to your workouts.
