"Beam Me Up, Sulu" is a Star Trek film with a difference. Sure, it stars George Takei as Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu but this fan-film was made by a group of student Trekkies in 1985 and lost... until now.

The original footage was shot in a Californian forest but disappeared in a mom-related tidying away incident and while it might not trouble the Academy Awards any time soon it does speak to the legendary passion of the "Trekkie" community and the youthful energy of the students behind it (apart from Takei, they also persuaded
James Shigeta - later the ill-fated corporate exec in "Die Hard" - to join the cast).
Besides the charming back story, the unearthed footage is a love letter to "Star Trek" that underlines the principles that made the original series such an incredible success story - hope, diversity and the fight for inclusion in media and society. "George Takei was the guy on TV who looked like me," explains Stan Woo, the driving force behind the fan-film. "And I liked what I saw so we made the fan-film."
