Kevin Bacon's horror-comedy 'Tremors' just crashed the Prime Video top 10 — don't overlook this cult classic monster movie

It's not every day that you see a cheesy monster movie crash into Prime Video's streaming charts, but that's exactly what has just happened. At the time of writing, the Kevin Bacon creature feature "Tremors" is sitting in the Prime Video top 10, behind Shane Black's crime caper, "Play Dirty," Prime Video's recently-released rom-com "Maintenance Required," and Bond blockbusters like "No Time To Die."
If you've never seen it before, now's as good a time as any to revisit "Tremors." It's a wholly entertaining, pacy watch that boasts fun characters who find themselves pitted against bigger, dangerous beasts that burrow up from below, hungry for some human flesh.
Intrigued? You can find a little more info about "Tremors" below, including a round-up of what critics have said about the cult hit in the past.
What is 'Tremors' about?
Ron Underwood's "Tremors" sees two handymen, Val McKee (Kevin Bacon) and Earl Bassett (Fred Ward), trying to leave the town of Perfection, Nevada, behind... and becoming tangled up in a deadly situation in the process, alongside visiting seismologist, Rhonda (Finn Carter).
Perfection's under attack from "Graboids," enormous worm-like creatures that live underground and are attracted to vibration and sound. As more of the town's population gets picked off, our remaining residents are forced into the fight of their lives with the colossal subterranean foes.
In addition to Bacon and Ward, "Tremors" also stars Michael Gross, Reba McEntire, Bobby Jacoby, and Tony Genaro, among others.
Should you stream 'Tremors' on Prime Video?
In a word: yes. "Tremors" is a thriller, plain and simple. This monster movie throwback is silly, suspenseful, and brings its monsters to life brilliantly.

To put it as plainly as possible, "Tremors" is just a solid idea, executed really well, from the pacing to the creatures to the performances. We have an incredibly watchable lead pair in Val and Earl (Bacon and Ward), and some genuinely awesome practical effects bringing those monsters to life. It's good, old-fashioned monster movie fun that's more than entertaining.
You'll know whether it'll work for you, but for me, "Tremors" is a blast from the get-go and a movie I'd definitely recommend giving a shot. And seeing as we're in the spookiest of months, with Halloween just a couple of weeks away, I can't think of a better time to champion a monster movie like this.
You don't have to trust my opinion alone, either, as "Tremors" comes highly recommended, too. While some of its direct-to-video sequels leave a lot to be desired, this original movie's still well-regarded; it currently holds an 89% approval rating from critics on the review aggregate site, Rotten Tomatoes.
Revisiting the movie for Little White Lies, Anton Bitel writes: "Propelled by impressive practical effects, this is an oater-inflected monster movie which fully embraces its own icky absurdity and literally low culture – but the film’s hidden weapon is a strong focus on characterisation."
In his four-star Empire review (published in 2015), critic Kim Newman called "Tremors" "a clever, unfussy pastiche" of classic 50s monster movies and says "Tremors" is "entertaining and unself-conscious enough to stand the test of time, even if the puppetry doesn't".
Time Out offers a simple but definitive verdict on "Tremors," too: "This is what a monster movie is supposed to be like, and it's terrific."
