Today's Netflix Picks

  • "Casino": Robert De Niro oversees a casino that's a front for the Mafia.
  • "The Lego Movie": An ordinary Lego figure is thrust into an extraordinary adventure.
  • "Sicario": An FBI agent joins a government task force to bring down a Mexican drug cartel leader.
  • "Zombieland": Four survivors of a zombie apocalypse team up to get to safety at a California amusement park.
  • "The Actor Awards": SAG-AFTRA's annual award show for the best performances of the year.

Netflix just added 21 new shows and movies to the streaming service today (March 1). That's a lot to sort through first thing in a month, so I wouldn't blame you if you didn't know where to start. Especially since there are more than a few must-watch movies in the list.

So let's dive into the five newly added to Netflix shows and movies that I think you should be streaming right now.

5 Netflix shows and movies to stream right now

'Casino' (1995)

Genre: Epic crime drama

What's it about? Sam "Ace" Rothstein (Robert De Niro) is a Jewish-American gambling expert who gets tapped by the Chicago Outfit to run the casino and hotel operations at the Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas. The movie follows the story of his operation, the Mafia's involvement and his personal drama over the course of much of the 1970s and 80s.

Why you need to watch it: Because "Casino" was another Scorsese Mafia movie, it is often maligned as a retread of "Goodfellas." But this is a Scorsese movie starring De Niro alongside an incredible cast with an incredible soundtrack. Sometimes retreading greatness can still be great.

'The Lego Movie' (2014)

Genre: Animated adventure comedy

What's it about? Emmet Brickowski (Chris Pratt) is a seemingly ordinary Lego minifigure. But when his ordinary life crosses paths with the extraordinary Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks), he learns he could be "the Special": a master builder destined to bring down the evil Lord Business (Will Ferrell) and his superweapon, "the Kragle."

Why you should watch it: Simply put, this movie is fun. It's fun, it's well-made and has a twist you won't see coming. In real life, maybe everything isn't awesome. But I promise you, in this movie, everything is indeed awesome. Plus, it's great if you need something to watch for the whole family.

'Sicario' (2015)

Genre: Action crime thriller

What's it about? "Sicario" centers around Kate (Emily Blunt), an FBI special agent brought onto a joint task force overseen by CIA SAC officer Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) and a former Mexican prosecutor, Alejandro Gillick (Benicio del Toro), who is now a CIA-trained assassin. Their mission? To apprehend Sonora Cartel lieutenant Manuel Díaz (Bernardo Saracino), in the hopes that he will get them to his boss, Fausto Alarcón (Julio Cesar Cedillo).

Why you should watch it: This movie is awesome. Blunt and Del Toro's performances are worth the price of admission alone, but this movie succeeds because of Taylor Sheridan's well-paced writing and Denis Villeneuve's masterful directing of the film's action set pieces. When it comes to crime thrillers, it's tough to do much better than "Sicario."

'Zombieland' (2009)

Genre: Post-apocalyptic zombie comedy

What's it about? A young man, Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), is on the run in a zombie apocalypse. He quickly runs into Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), but they run into trouble when they meet the conniving sisters Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin). Once they put their differences aside, the quartet heads for Pacific Playland amusement park in Los Angeles, which is allegedly free from the zombie infestation.

Why you should watch it: "Zombieland" feels like the type of movie that doesn't get made anymore. It's well-made, but not an awards contender by any means. But that's irrelevant, because it's just so fun to watch. If you can handle the violence and the occasional tugging on your heartstrings, you'll be rewarded with an excellent Bill Murray cameo.

'The Actor Awards' Presented by SAG-AFTRA (Netflix live event)

Genre: Live awards show

What's it about? SAG-AFTRA brings together the biggest stars in film and television at the 32nd annual "Actor Awards" (formerly the Screen Actors Guild Awards) live from Los Angeles. The broadcast begins at 8 p.m. ET and is hosted by Kristen Bell.

Why you should watch it: "The Actor Awards" aren't always predictive of the Oscars, but this is one of the last major awards before Hollywood's crowning moment. Outside of Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role, which is Jesse Buckley's to lose, these awards should be largely competitive, meaning the ceremony could deliver some stunning moments.

Stream "The Actor Awards" Presented by SAG-AFTRA live starting at 8 p.m. ET tonight (March 1)
