5 new Netflix movies and shows you need to stream this week (June 8-14)
Don't miss 'Song Sung Blue,' 'Sweet Magnolias' and more
If you're looking to find what new movies and shows Netflix is adding this week, you've come to the right place. The streaming service is adding 16 new movies and shows this week, and while that's not overwhelming, you'll still want to know what's worth a watch.
Lucky for you, I've got you covered because there are a few things worth hitting play on. Top of the list is "Song Sung Blue," a biopic musical about a Neil Diamond cover band starring Kate Hudson and Hugh Jackman. Hudson's performance earned her an Oscar nomination, so don't skip this one just because it's a musical (or because it's about Neil Diamond music).
On the TV shows front, there are two worth keeping an eye on. "Sweet Magnolias" is back for its fifth season, so if you've enjoyed the romance drama series in the past, make sure to check out the latest episodes. For those who prefer a comedy series, all three seasons of "Shrill" are being added to Netflix this week, and Aidy Bryant's Emmy-nominated show is definitely worth watching.
Those aren't the only movies, shows and live events to add to your watchlist this week, though. Here's the full schedule of everything new on Netflix over the next seven days, along with my top picks for what you need to stream. Don't forget to check out everything new on Netflix in June 2026 for even more movies and shows to check out.

Malcolm has been covering the latest in streaming shows and movies since 2023. Every week, he hunts down the top shows and movies to watch on Netflix.
New on Netflix this week: Top picks
'Song Sung Blue'
Genre: Biographical musical movie
What it's about: Mike Sardina (Hugh Jackman) was a struggling Don Ho impersonator until one fateful night, when he met Claire Stengl (Kate Hudson). She was a hairdresser by day and a Patsy Cline impersonator by night, but when she and Mike decide to become a Neil Diamond tribute act, their lives change forever.
Why you should watch it: If you like Neil Diamond's music, then you'll enjoy this movie. But even if you don't, "Song Sung Blue" centers around two performances well worth a watch. Hudson, in particular, is excellent. Her performance as Claire was deemed Oscar-worthy, even if she didn't ultimately take home a statuette.

'Sweet Magnolias' season 5
Genre: Romantic drama series
What it's about: Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott), and Helen (Heather Headley) are old friends who call themselves the "Sweet Magnolias." For the past four seasons, they've called the town of Serenity, South Carolina, home, but in season 5, they're going to Manhattan. What remains to be seen is how much of their baggage and drama they'll bring with them.
Why you should watch it: If you like a soapy drama, then "Sweet Magnolias" should scratch the itch. It won't be a show for everyone, but if it clicks for you, then you might just binge the entire thing. Plus, this season doesn't just bring a new locale, it also adds "The Sopranos" star Jamie-Lynn Sigler as Nell Winters, a writer whom Maddie befriends while she's in New York.

'Shrill' seasons 1-3
Genre: Comedy series
What it's about: "Shrill" stars Aidy Bryant as Annie, a young adult in Portland, Oregon. She's juggling life's various complications: work (a journalist), relationships (mostly bad) and family (her dad has cancer). But she's also fat, and while she wants to improve her life, she doesn't want to change her body. That makes things further complicated, but she's taking it in stride.
Why you should watch it: Bryant also developed this show, making it a perfect fit for the comedic talents she honed at "Saturday Night Live." While it only ran for a brief three seasons, the show earned high praise in its time, and Bryant earned an Emmy nomination for her performance as Annie in 2021. If you want a series worth binging, "Shrill" is a perfect choice.

'Maternal Instinct'
Genre: True crime documentary movie
What it's about: "Maternal Instinct" tells the tragic, twisted tale of the murder of Reagan Simmons-Hancock at the hands of Taylor Parker. The latter was a young woman in love with Wade Griffin, a hog trapper in a small Texas town. She was quickly pregnant, but as the due date crept closer, people started to have doubts. But even they couldn't have imagined the lengths Parker would go to have a baby.
Why you should watch it: If you're into true crime documentaries, it's tough to find a story more messed up than what Parker did to Simmons-Hancock. It's not for me, but I know all too well that I'm in the minority when it comes to being averse to true crime shows and movies.
Watch "Maternal Instinct" on Netflix starting June 12
'Outlast: The Jungle'
Genre: Reality competition series
What it's about: "Outlast" is a survival competition show where 16 players are initially split into teams in the Alaskan wilderness. Once there, they must survive with few supplies available until just one team remains and wins $1 million. In "Outlast: The Jungle," the show ditches the Alaskan wilds for a tropical island, but the quest remains the same.
Why you should watch it: If you're not ready to be done with "Survivor" and need something to fill the void, this survival series might just do the trick. You'll have to tune in to see for yourself just who is strong enough to make it to the end.
