Following the launch of the Apple Watch SE 3, Apple’s $249 smartwatch, with 5G connectivity and, for the first time, an always-on display, Garmin has entered the ring with its surprise new Bounce 2. The reimagined smartwatch with LTE connectivity is aimed at kids, and it’ll set parents back $300.

The Bounce is available now and is designed to be a phone alternative for parents who want to stay connected to their kids. The watch costs $300/£260, plus a $10/£10 monthly subscription. The watch looks set to compete with the Apple Watch SE 3, which Apple has positioned as a line for older kids, and the Fitbit Ace tracker, designed for a younger audience.

In addition to “encouraging an active lifestyle," the LTE connectivity on the Bounce 2 enables a secure, two-way voice calling, voice messaging, text messaging, and live location tracking via the Garmin Jr App. Parents can be notified via the app when their child leaves a parent-defined area, like a park, school, or friend’s house.

As with all of the best Garmin watches, there are built-in sports apps, but these are tweaked for kids and allow them to track a variety of activities, from running to team sports. It's also swim-proof.

From a smartwatch perspective, the Bounce 2 has educational games on board, as well as Amazon Music capabilities. Music can be played through the watch’s speaker or through paired headphones. The speaker also allows for voice commands, meaning kids can use phrases like “call mum” or “start a timer.”

The watch has a round 1.2-inch AMOLED display and comes in three colors — teal, purple, and black. The rated battery life is two days, which beats Apple’s alternative, but this will be another device you have to remember to charge.
