Marvel's Wolverine made a surprise appearance during the September 2025 PlayStation State of Play, right at the end of the livestream. Sony revealed a trailer and a fall 2026 release window.

Insomniac Games is mostly known now for Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 on the PlayStation, so the supremely violent Wolverine trailer is a jarring departure from your friendly neighborhood web crawler.

"I'm not a violent man," Wolverine ironically mutters before eviscerating several enemies. Other X-Men characters pop up in the trailer, including Omega Red and Mystique.

We've been waiting for Wolvie to show up for a few years now. The game was originally teased in 2021. At the time, Insomniac Games said that the game was "very early in development." The developer had yet to even release Spider-Man 2 at that point, as that game launched in 2023.

We got another glimpse of the yellow spandexed hero in 2023 when a Sony hack revealed three different X-Men games in development. The other two games, which may or may not be in development from Insomniac, are supposed to arrive in 2029 and 2033. Wolverine was tipped to come out on September 1 of this year.

Outside of that hack, this is the first official word we've seen from Sony or Insomniac regarding the game.

The newest trailer seems to show Logan in a dive-bar in Madripoor, a common setting in Marvel, and you can also see easter eggs like "HLK 181" on a license plate — a reference to the comic where Wolverine debuted, "The Incredible Hulk" #181.

Insomniac also shared a "Behind the Claws" video that touched on some of the gameplay and goals for the game. It revealed the voice actor behind Wolverine, Liam McIntyre. Video game fans will know him as JD Fenix in "Gears of War 4" and 5. He also played Taron Malicos in "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order."

Outside of video games, McIntyre previously played Spartacus in "Spartacus," the Weather Wizard in "The Flash" CW show, and Captain Boomerang in several DC animated movies.

Marvel's Wolverine looks to be a hyper-violent showcase, but hopefully it'll include a compelling story a la the Spider-Man games.

The game is set to launch in the fall of 2026, and Insomniac Games promised to reveal more next spring.
