Tom's Guide Verdict

I slept on the Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper in a Luxury Plush, and found the bed topper to live up to its promise of cooling support for side sleepers. The heat-dissipating GlacioTex cover offers advanced cooling tech perfect for combating heat-trapping mattresses, while the 3" height adds enough thickness to boost the support ofolder beds. Side sleepers will feel well supported and comfortable on the Luxury Plush, but very lightweight sleepers may need something softer if you prefer a sink-in feel. Back and stomach sleepers, meanwhile, should look to the Luxury Firm for proper back and hip support. At around $374 for a queen, it's a little on the pricey side — but well worth it for most side sleepers looking to boost their bed's overall comfort.

Earlier this year, Helix added two new cooling mattress toppers to their collection, with one of them being the Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper with GlacioTex.

Since Helix is the reputable brand behind some of this year's best mattresses, I wanted to test its new luxury bed topper to see if it's worthy of a place in this year's best mattress toppers guide.

I put the Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper to the test by placing it on my full-size memory foam mattress. I'll be sharing my complete thoughts after three weeks of sleeping on it further below this page, but if you're short on time, here's the review in brief...

Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper with GlacioTex: Review in brief

Available in six sizes, the Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper is made from a 3" thick layer of high-density foam, with a heat-dissipating GlacioTex cover that adds enhanced cooling.

It's available in two firmness levels: Luxury Plush or Luxury Firm. I slept on a full-size Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper in a Luxury Plush, which promised "cloud-like comfort" that cushions shoulders and hips while side sleeping. The Luxury Firm is designed to add lower back support to old or unsupportive mattresses.

Type: Memory Foam
Depth: 3"
Cover: GlacioTex
Corner straps: Yes
Trial period: 100 nights
Warranty: 1-year warranty
Starting MSRP: from $373.33 at Helix

As a side sleeper under 130lbs, I opted for the Luxury Plush as lighter weight side sleepers require something on the softer side. Helix also implies that it's built especially for side sleepers, while the Luxury Firm is geared toward back and stomach sleepers.

After three weeks of testing, I found the Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper most supportive for side sleeping, as advertised. While I wouldn't call the mattress topper "plush," I did find it had that classic memory foam feel, but without the "quicksand-y" sink that puts people off all-foam beds.

This balance of comfort and support means I can confidently recommend this mattress topper to side sleepers, regardless of body size and firmness preferences. However, as a combination sleeper who also sleeps on my back, and my hips sank whenever I slept in that position. Back sleepers should definitely opt for the Luxury Firm.

Before testing this bed topper, I was already familiar with GlacioTex material, so I wasn't surprised by how cool-the-touch its cover felt. There are also anchor straps attached to the cover to keep the topper in place, but keep in mind that the zip-up cover is spot clean only.

All in all, this mattress topper has a luxurious feel, look, and design that provides a cooling comfort layer for your mattress. Although I personally, as a very lightweight sleeper, feel it could be a lot softer considering it's labelled "Luxury Plush", it's still supportive enough to cater to all side sleepers.

As for price and deals, a regular 25% discount takes a queen-size down to $374 ($498.66 at MSRP). While it's far from the budget price tier, that's actually around the average price for a queen-sized cooling bed topper (and ever so slightly above the average cost of a standard queen memory foam topper).

It also comes with a generous 100-night sleep trial, although I feel the 1-year warranty could be longer. If you're keen to learn more, my complete Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper with GlacioTex review is below...

Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper with GlacioTex Review: Price & deals

  • All Helix foam toppers cost the same (premium) price
  • A queen-size retails for $498, but regular sales cut up to 27% off
  • Has a generous 100-night trial, but a short 1-year warranty

All of Helix's memory foam mattress toppers cost the same, with only the Birch Plush Organic Mattress Topper (technically made by sub-brand Birch) being higher in price due to its natural latex foam and other organic materials.

The retail price of a queen-size Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper with GlacioTex is $498.66. That's more than even some of our best cheap mattress picks, but it is on par with what other specialist cooling mattress toppers cost in the same size.

However, Helix never sells its products at MSRP. Regular Helix mattress sales cut between 20% and 25% off — or even as much as 27% off for major sale events. Helix usually runs its largest discounts during federal holidays and Black Friday.

Below are the official MSRPs for the Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper with GlacioTex:

  • Twin MSRP: $373.33
  • Twin XL MSRP: $373.33
  • Full MSRP: $437.33
  • Queen MSRP: $498.66
  • King MSRP: $561.33
  • California King MSRP: $561.33

The benefits are pretty good, too, with a 100-night sleep trial that's much longer than the average 30 nights you get with most toppers from other brans. (It even matches the standard length of a mattress trial.)

However, we feel that the one-year warranty could be longer, considering the luxury price and a standard bed topper warranty measuring three to five years.

Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper with GlacioTex review: Design & Materials

  • 3" high-density memory foam core — either single or double layer
  • The cooling GlacioTex cover includes anchor straps...
  • ...but the non-washable, non-removable cover curiously has a zip

The Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper comes in two comfort levels, and while they're both the same 3" depth 3", their constructions are slightly different.

The Luxury Plush version, which I tested, features one 3" layer of high-density foam designed to provide sink-in soft comfort. On the other hand, the Luxury Firm's foam core comprises a 1.75" high-density memory foam comfort layer and a 1.75" high-density responsive foam layer for proper lumbar support.

By comparison, the Helix GlacioTex Premium Mattress Topper has a slightly taller 3.75" depth, complete with microcoils — and it, too, comes in either plush or firm. Notably, the Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper contains the highest foam density of all Helix's bed toppers.

The cool-to-the-touch GlacioTex cover draws heat away from your body and is naturally waterproof, creating a protective top layer for your mattress, but it's spot clean only and is not supposed to be removed or put in the washing machine. (Peculiarly, though, the cover has a zip and is removable.)

Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper with GlacioTex review: Performance

  • Expanded instantly with light off-gassing
  • Provides balanced support for side sleeping
  • Cover is cooling, but be careful with the bedding you use

I slept on a full-size Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper with GlacioTex in Luxury Plush for three weeks, testing it with a focus on three key areas in line with our mattress methodology: support and comfort, temperature regulation, and ease of set-up.

Set-up

Similar to the best mattresses in a box, the Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper with GlacioTex arrives rolled up and compressed into a shipping box, which means I had to unbox it and leave it to expand.

As both a mattress and bed topper tester, I found the set-up easy, but those who've never unboxed a mattress or topper before may find it tricky without instructions, which aren't included in the box or on the brand's website.

Taking the Helix Premium Memory Foam Topper out of its box was simple, even though it was wrapped in many layers of plastic, which took a while to unpeel. Once I peeled the last layer off, it expanded immediately and left only a hint of off-gassing. Although I'd say it reached its full height in under an hour, I left it to expand overnight to be on the safe side.

At 54lbs, the box is not too difficult to carry up stairs for those without mobility issues, and I found it easy to lift the opened mattress topper onto the bed once fully expanded.

Score: 4.5 out of 5

Comfort and support

I opted for the Luxury Plush version of the Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper as I am a side sleeper who also occasionally sleeps on her back, so keep in mind that anyone who opts for the Luxury Firm option will have a different experience to me.

Helix describes the Luxury Plush as providing "cradling pressure relief at your hips and shoulders," making it an ideal design for side sleepers as the hips and shoulders are the main pressure points in this region.

I felt well supported when side sleeping on the Luxury Plush version of this topper, and I did feel the slight "hug" of memory foam. The 3" of high-density memory foam is perfect if you need to boost an old, thin, or unsupportive mattress, and the anchor straps keep the mattress topper from shifting if you move around a lot in your sleep (which I do.)

However, I wouldn't call this a "plush" mattress topper, as it felt much firmer than expected around the shoulders. I am a lightweight (under 130lbs) sleeper, however, so those in the average (between 130lbs and 230lbs) or heavier (over 230lbs) weight categories may find the topper has more give.

While my hips felt comfortable when side sleeping, I didn't feel that my hips and lower back were well supported when back sleeping. So, this may be an issue if, like me, you sleep on both your back and side.

Score: 4 out of 5

 Temperature regulation

A hand feels the temperature of the Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper with GlacioTex.

The cover may be breathable and moisture-wicking, but it's definitely not cool-to-the-touch. (Image credit: Future)

This isn't my first time using a product with heat-dissipating GlacioTex material, having recently tested the Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector. This protector slept ultra-cool, and it's the perennial protector I use whenever I'm not testing a mattress or mattress protector.

So, suffice to say, I had high hopes for this mattress topper's temperature control — and it didn't disappoint. The cool-to-the-touch cover did all the work (as far as I'm aware, the foam contained no cooling gel), and I slept cool throughout the summer.

However, make sure that you use a breathable mattress protector, like the Sijo AiryWeight Eucalyptus Mattress Protector, as some plastic-like waterproof protectors can trap heat and render cooling toppers useless.

Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper with GlacioTex review: User reviews

  • Not many online customer reviews available
  • Some complain about the slipperiness of the GlacioTex
  • Reviews praise the quality and extra comfort it adds

It's difficult to gauge a panoramic customer consensus on this mattress topper as there aren't many online user reviews for the relatively new model.

There's no review section on Helix's website, but there are just a dozen or so reviews on Amazon regarding the Luxury Plush. Over half the reviews are positve, with many praising the luxurious quality, durability, and the extra comfort boost the mattress topper delivers.

However, some reviews point out that the 3" thickness adds too much height to their mattress, which is a fair point if you have a tall mattress or mobility issues. Some also complain about the slipperiness of the GlacioTex material when adding sheets. Although this is a common complaint with GlacioTex, I actually didn't find it to be the case with this topper.

Should you buy the Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper with GlacioTex?

The Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress Topper certainly lives up to its title, as this is a luxury bed topper through and through. I reccomend it as a much cheaper alternative to a cooling mattress, as its cooling GlacioTex cover is often used in the best cooling mattresses.

I think the Luxury Plush is a great choice for most side sleepers who want to feel supported and comfortable without the sink-in softness of most memory foam beds. That said, lightweight side sleepers like me or anyone who likes an ultra-plush topper, will be surprised by the firmness and lack of plushness.

Back sleepers may also find that, despite the firmness, the Luxury Plush does not provide enough support for the hips and lower back. The Luxury Firm version is available, however, and should definitely be the top choice for back and stomach sleepers.

Overall, this is a quality mattress topper that promises to last a lot longer than its one-year warranty suggests. Yes, there are cheaper memory foam mattress toppers out there (see our Also Recommended section below) but they won't have the same advanced cooling cover or high-quality design. Just make sure to choose the right firmness level for your sleep and mattress.

Buy it if...

✅ You're a side sleeper: This mattress topper's high-density foam supported me in this position the most.

✅ You sleep hot: The cool-to-the-touch GlacioTex cover offers advanced, tester-approved cooling tech.

✅ Your mattress is too firm: As well as boosting the support and comfort of a mattress that's passed its best, this Helix topper can soften up a relatively new mattress that's too firm.

Don't buy it if...

❌You're expecting ultra-softness: I slept on the Luxury Plush model, but, as a very lightweight sleeper, I didn't find it that soft, despite it not quite being firm enough for back sleeping either.

❌ You have a non-breathable waterproof mattress protector: The GlacioTex cover is ultra-cool, dissipating heat while you sleep.

❌You want an easy clean: Despite having a zip-up removable cover, the mattress topper is spot clean only and the cover (curiously) shouldn't be removed or placed in the washing machine.
