Why you can trust Tom's Guide
If I could choose any way to spend my night, it would most likely include making pizza. In the warmer months my outdoor behemoth, the Ooni Koda 2 Max, is my best friend. But when it’s cold out and I’m craving 'za, the Ooni Volt 2 turned out to be just the appliance I need.
I tested the original Ooni Volt 12 electric pizza oven when it came out and loved almost everything about it. It heated up fast, stayed cool to the touch, absorbed smoke and baked evenly-cooked pies nearly as quick as my propane-powered oven. The only problem? Size and weight. It was too bulky to keep out full-time and too heavy to lug in and out of storage.
For the Volt 2, Ooni took everything I loved about the OG redesigned it into something I can actually lift, store and still crank up to 850 degrees. At $700, it’s not just lighter and smarter; it’s also cheaper than the original Volt.
I'm sure these are the reasons the Ooni Volt 2 landed on Oprah's Favorite Things list, but I had to find out why for myself. Read my full review of the Ooni Volt 2 below, to learn how it stacks up against the best pizza ovens and who I recommend it's for.

Ooni Volt 2 review: The ups
Manageable size for most countertops
Obviously, everyone’s kitchen setup is different, but the Ooni Volt 2 measures 21.5 × 17.4 × 10.4 inches. That's noticeably smaller than the original Volt 12 (24.2 × 20.8 × 10.9 inches.)
It fits comfortably on my countertop and even slides into one of my base cabinets. Sure, it takes up most of the space in the same cabinet where I’d usually stash my KitchenAid stand mixer or air fryer, but the difference is, I can actually lift it.
At about 39 pounds, the Volt 2 isn’t exactly light, but it’s absolutely manageable. Most of that heft comes from the 12 x 12 inch pizza stone, which is also the only part you need to install. From unboxing to baking, you can be up and running in about five minutes.

Ooni also makes a case for leaving the Volt 2 out permanently. It comes with a roast rack much you get with a toaster oven, and the control panel features cooking modes to match. But I kept my review to pizza making, as I really don't recommend this unit as a toaster oven replacement.
Heats up quickly and proofs dough
On that note, what makes the Ooni Volt 2 different from a standard oven is how hot it gets and how quickly it gets there. In my tests, it reached about 810 degrees in just 20 minutes — the sweet spot for the Neapolitan-style pizza. You can, of course, adjust the temperature or try out one of several presets, but the default pizza setting nails it for most people.
Another clever feature is the dough-proofing mode, which holds a steady 70 degrees. This is perfect for letting your dough rise without overproofing. It’s a small perk, but it makes the Volt 2 feel like a genuinely well-designed, pizza-maker-friendly appliance.
Safe, insulated exterior
When it comes to making pizza indoors, a little mess and escaped smoke is usually unavoidable. My outdoor oven constantly spits out flour and cheese bits that burn up, but that’s obviously not ideal inside, especially around sensitive smoke alarms.
The Ooni Volt 2 solves this with an impressive smoke filtration system that vents clean steam out the back while absorbing the rest. The filter is easy to clean after a few uses, keeping maintenance simple.
Another important safety feature: the exterior doesn’t get dangerously hot. The top gets warm, but not enough to burn you. Most of the surface where you might touch is is well-insulated. As long as you avoid the metal trim and base, it’s safe enough for curious hands to brush by without worry.
Makes pizza night easy
One of the best parts of pizza night is how fast it all comes together. Everyone gets their own toppings, and I love lining up a few creative pies straight from my Pinterest board.
The Ooni Volt 2 doesn't add any friction to the ritual. Unlike propane or wood-fired ovens where you need to rotate the pizza around the flame, here you just slide it in using a pizza peel, keep an eye on it through the viewing window, and in about 90 seconds you’ve got a perfectly baked pie from top to bottom.
I was satisfied with the pizzas I produced, and I have my family members asking if we can put on pizza night more often than we already do.
The 12" perforated pizza peel fits perfectly inside the Ooni Volt 2 and is a must-have for a successful pizza night with this indoor oven.
Ooni Volt 2 review: The downs
Indoor only
There's one key difference between the Volt 2 and the original Volt 12: the Volt 2 is designed for indoor use only. The original Volt could be used booth inside and outside, which was handy for balconies or spots where other fuel sources weren’t an option.
Personally, I never used it outdoors. I stick to my big outdoor ovens, like the Ooni Koda 2 Max or the Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Oven, which also comes with a pizza stone and is much more budget-friendly. But the versatility of the Volt 12 still seemed like a selling point.
That said, you might get away with using the Volt 2 in a very controlled outdoor space, like a covered balcony, but it’s not recommended. If you do, make sure it’s away from the elements and set on a heat-safe surface.
Ooni Volt 2 review: Verdict
If you love making pizza, or you want to make pizza more often, this is an easy gadget to recommend. It’s powerful, safe, compact, and genuinely fun to use. I can say it’s one of the few kitchen gadgets that actually earns its counter (or should I say, cabinet) space.
But if you’re just dabbling, I'd perhaps suggest starting with a pizza stone in your existing oven. Experiment a bit, and once you realize how addictive homemade pizza is, then upgrade to this.
For me, the Ooni Volt 2 is exactly what I need when it’s too cold for my outdoor oven. It’s already become part of my weekly routine. I might not have the same pull as Oprah, but you hopefully you can take both of our words' for it.
