5 IKEA family membership perks you probably didn’t know about — and they're all free

When it comes to budget-friendly, reliable and stylish home decor and storage solutions, IKEA is a popular go-to store. And since opening its doors 80 years ago (in the U.S.), IKEA has consistently rewarded its loyal customers with excellent rewards programs.

Perhaps one of my favorites is the IKEA Family membership, which is completely free to sign up for and gives you a point for every dollar you spend. It also gives you access to exclusive online discounts, which, for an avid shopper like me, can save you serious cash.

Free workshops and special events

If you want to keep bored children entertained, especially during the school break, you’ll be glad to know that IKEA runs various workshops, events and summer camps.

These are usually around specific times of the year, and vary by city, so be sure to check the website. Workshops include all sorts of exciting tasks from kids’ craft nights and cooking clubs to teach young children basic skills and seed planting.

Simply find your city on the IKEA website, and check what’s available in your area.

Find your pre-loved furniture a new home

Be it a pre-loved Billy Bookcase or Kallax shelf, we all have old, IKEA furniture collecting dust in our homes or in need of replacement. But instead of dumping or donating it, IKEA offers a buyback and resell program available only in select stores.

The process is quite simple. Clean up your old furniture, calculate the estimated value, then get an official estimate from IKEA.

You’ll need to bring the item to the store for a final assessment, and once completed, IKEA will give you an offer. If you decide to accept it, you’ll get the value on an IKEA refund card, which you can then use to spend on your next purchase. So not only are you making a saving but giving your pre-loved furniture a new home.

Deals from other stores (other than IKEA)

Another lesser-known perk most members are unaware of is that the IKEA Family membership provides access to special offers from stores and brands outside of IKEA.

While significant deals are often hard to come by, it’s worth checking in from time to time to see what’s available on IKEA’s website. Deals that have been spotted recently, however, include a 25% discount for members on their next Crocs purchase.

Plus, a benefit for parents that offers a free month of Lingokids, followed by a permanent 15% reduction on the monthly subscription cost. Not bad considering that every penny counts. Those are good deals, especially when you consider that every little saving helps.

Access to As-Is shopping

Additionally, IKEA Family members can also utilize the store's As-Is selection. This is another hidden perk, similar to the open-box deals found at retailers such as Best Buy, GameStop, and Pottery Barn, combined with a B-Stock purchasing experience similar to that of Reverb.

Typically, IKEA often sells items "as-is" at a reduced price. This is because products are essentially like-new, but have been marked down due to a factory defect or were previously used as floor models and cannot be sold as brand-new. Again, the As-Is selection varies depending on the store, but it's a great place to look for significant discounts.

You get a 90-day price protection

We’ve all been there — we’ll buy something from IKEA, take it home, only to find out weeks later that it’s gone on sale (as if it couldn't get any cheaper?).

Luckily, IKEA family members benefit from price protection, allowing them to receive a refund for the difference if an item's price drops within 90 days of purchase—a great perk considering other stores' strict return policies. What’s more, this policy offers peace of mind, especially if you have just bought something only to see it go on sale shortly after.

Simply bring in your receipt to show you scanned your IKEA Family card at the time of purchase, and the store should refund the difference. Happy days!

So if you are or wish to become an IKEA Family member, sign up for free and make decent savings right now.
