Today's NYT Strands answer — Today's theme and hints

The official theme for NYT Strands #792 is... "May the forest be with you".

  • DOPE
  • PEACH
  • ROAD

Still struggling? The spangram touches two opposite sides of the board (but can start and end anywhere), and will give you a hint about the connection between the answers. Today, it starts with 'B' and ends in 'T'.

“May the forest be with you”

Hi Strands fans. This was not plain sailing. Despite the overt nature of the theme "May the forest be with you" (a somewhat tenuous pun on Star Wars Day: May 4th), it turns out I know precious little about types of wood.

I ticked off the ones I knew right away, connecting BIRCH in the bottom-left corner and CEDAR directly opposite. I didn't actually know DOGWOOD, but guessed from the letters available in the top-left corner.

After that, I was stumped, so used two clues that revealed types of wood I was unfamiliar with. ASPEN was at the top of the board, with CYPRESS on the right.

These two combined to make a clear path for the end of the spangram, and I was able to connect BRANCHOUT spelt backwards from the bottom of the board to the top.

That just left one anagram to decode in the bottom-right corner. TPYLUEASUC became EUCALYPTUS to complete the puzzle.

“Something's fishy”

Hi Strands fans. The theme of "Something's fishy" initially had me thinking along very literal grounds. Surely this is a puzzle about sea life?

Nope. It's actually the 'suspicious' meaning of 'fishy', as I discovered when I found STRANGE in the top-left corner.

I then spotted UNUSUAL on the opposite side, which left the letters "odd" between the two. I extended this to the bottom of the board to read THATSODD for the spangram and I was truly on my way.

The rest of the right-hand side of the board was pretty straightforward. The suspicious 'Z' was part of BIZARRE, with the unusual 'Q' the front of QUIRKY below it.

The left-hand side wasn't much harder. WEIRD was in the middle, which just left PECULIAR below it to complete the puzzle.
