‘The Menu’ (2022)

“The Menu” is a dark thriller that is always bouncing between services. It’s been on Netflix, it’s been on HBO Max, and it’s being served up on Prime Video this month. That’s good news, as this twisted fest is quite the ride. Anchored by a commanding performance from Ralph Fiennes as an exacting head chef, and also featuring Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult, “The Menu” dips into the surreal to deliver an unforgettable fine dining experience.

Best enjoyed with as little prior knowledge as possible (if you can resist, I’d even advise skipping the trailer linked above), “The Menu” sees foodie Tyler (Hoult) bring his date, Margot (Taylor-Joy), to the exclusive restaurant of famed chef, Julian Slowik (Fiennes). They are treated to a true Michelin-star meal, but as the evening progresses, things get twisted. Its narrative beats can get pretty bleak, but it’s paired up with some quite exquisite comedy.

‘Spy Game’ (2001)

Directed by “Top Gun” helmer Tony Scott and starring Robert Redford and Brad Pitt, “Spy Game” makes a convincing case for itself based on the talent involved. While this action-thriller never quite reaches its full potential, it has its merits thanks to its engaging narrative and committed work from its two leads. Just don’t expect the most memorable watch. There’s a reason “Spy Game” has faded over time: it’s very predictable.

CIA operative Nathan Muir (Redford) is preparing for his imminent retirement when he learns that his protege, Tom Bishop (Pitt), has been arrested in Suzhou, China. Bishop is charged with espionage and will be executed in 24 hours unless the U.S. government negotiates for his freedom. With the CIA unwilling to bargain for fear of disrupting a soon-to-be-signed trade agreement, Muir has to use all his guile and skill to find a way to free Bishop.

‘The Running Man’ (2025)

Watch On

Edgar Wright’s spin on Stephen King’s dystopian thriller novel sticks much closer to the page than the hugely unfaithful ‘80s adaptation starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Here, it’s Glen Powell in the role of Ben Richards, a desperate man who competes on a deadly reality TV show to win the funds to pay for his daughter’s medical care. The sci-fi action-thriller starts strong, but really falls off a quality cliff towards the end. Powell brings big movie star energy, and while Wright tones down his eccentricities, he’s a very competent hand on the camera.

“The Running Man” is set in a dystopian future where the Network, an authoritarian media conglomerate, runs the United States. Ben Richards (Powell) is left with little choice but to partake in the eponymous TV show after he’s unable to afford vital flu medicine for his two-year-old daughter. The premise of the show is simple: Survive for 30 days while being hunted down by a squad of lethal assassins. With the eyes of the world watching, Richard has to run for his life, and might bring down the corrupt state system in the process.
