Netflix just added 23 new shows and movies — here are my 7 top picks

Netflix is adding a healthy 23 new shows and movies to the streaming service this week, meaning there's plenty to check out. However, a few of these titles stand out, including a sizzling hot new two-part documentary, "aka Charlie Sheen." This juicy tell-all promises to dive into the rise and fall of the mercurial actor, featuring the legend himself and many of his Hollywood friends.

But that's not the only thing you'll want to add to your watchlist this week. Netflix is adding a new original movie, "The Wrong Paris," a romantic comedy starring Miranda Cosgrove as Dawn, a Texan artist on a dating show supposedly set in Paris, France. But when her plane finally lands, she realizes she's just minutes from home — in Paris, Texas.

For more to watch, read on for all of my top picks, a full list of everything new on Netflix this week and the scoop on what's leaving Netflix this week. If you need more, check out our guide to everything new to Netflix in September and these three hit Netflix shows you need to binge right now.

New on Netflix this week: Top picks

'The Wrong Paris'

Watch On

"The Wrong Paris" stars Miranda Cosgrove as Dawn, an aspiring Texan artist who's just been accepted to art school in Paris, France. However, she isn't exactly flush with cash, so she has no way to get to France, let alone somewhere to live once she gets there. Luckily for Dawn, her friend has a solution to one of those problems: Join the cast of "The Honeypot: Paris," a dating show set in Paris. If Dawn makes it into the cast, she'll already be in Paris. Problem solved.

After nine hours in the air, though, Dawn realizes that her problem isn't solved. Instead, the show's producers have pulled a bait-and-switch, and now she's in Paris, Texas, just a few miles from her hometown. In another twist, the clean-cut cowboy (Pierson Fodé) she met at a bar days earlier turns out to be the show's eligible bachelor. Will this be a great movie? Who knows. But I love the premise, and it seems like a fun time if nothing else.

'aka Charlie Sheen'

Watch On

Charlie Sheen has had a wild life. Son of acclaimed actor Martin Sheen and brother to Brat Pack star Emilio Estevez, Sheen was always destined to be around Hollywood. But after rising to movie stardom in the 1980s, he arguably surpassed his famous family members at his peak, at one point earning over $1 million per episode of "Two and a Half Men."

But everything came crashing down when the constant spotlight, relationship drama and substance abuse problems led to an epic collapse from the mercurial actor's public perception.

Since then, Sheen has gone sober and worked hard to get his life back on track. In "aka Charlie Sheen," the celebrity gives a candid look at what went wrong across two parts, and you won't want to miss it.

Canelo Álvarez vs. Terence Crawford

Canelo vs. Crawford | Special Trailer | Netflix - YouTube Canelo vs. Crawford | Special Trailer | Netflix - YouTube
Watch On

Canelo Álvarez is one of the best boxers of all time. He's 63-2-2, with 39 KOs, and has never been one to shy away from a fight. He initially rose to prominence as a welterweight, but now he reigns as the undisputed super middleweight champion. His opponent, Terence Crawford, is no slouch, though. Crawford has been a former undisputed champion himself and is the current World Boxing Association (WBA) light middleweight titleholder.

One of these champions is going to leave as the undisputed super middleweight champion, while the other will be left hoping for a rematch to regain their crown. My money is on Canelo, but no matter who wins, Canelo vs. Crawford is going to be appointment viewing on Sept. 13 in Las Vegas.

Watch it live on Netflix starting at 9 p.m. ET on Sept. 13

"Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black" centers around Taylor Polidore Williams as Kimmie and Crystle Stewart as Mallory. These two are from totally different walks of life, with Kimmie working as a sex worker and Mallory running a successful beauty brand as part of the Bellarie family business. But their paths became intertwined in season 1 and now Kimmie is fully embroiled in Mallory's family drama.

Now in season 2, the script is flipped and Kimmie is the one in charge following Horace Bellaire's (Ricco Ross) decision to make her the sole owner of the Bellaire business. This has turned the rest of the Bellaires against her, and now Kimmie has to fend them off while taking her beauty brand to the next level.

By now, many Netflix subscribers are probably familiar with "Love Is Blind," the hit reality dating series that takes blind dating to a whole new level. In the show, singles get to know each other without even seeing the other person they're talking to, only finally getting a glance at true love once they are engaged to be married.

At this point, you frankly might even be familiar with "Love Is Blind: Brazil," which is one of the more successful spinoffs of the Netflix original franchise. But you've definitely never seen "Love Is Blind" quite like this — everyone in "Love Is Blind: Brazil" is over the age of 50.

'Jordan Jensen: Take Me With You'

Watch On

Netflix is one of the best streaming services because it brings an incredible combination of content, from shows and movies to live events and, of course, stand-up comedy specials.

This week, Netflix brings another hour-long special from a must-watch comedian. "Take Me With You" is Jordan Jensen's first hour-long stand-up special, and while the trailer doesn't give away much, Jensen has said that the special revolves around the absurdity of the human experience. “Being a person is humiliating and grotesque,” Jensen said regarding the special (h/t Deadline). “I’m not sure why we are all pretending it’s adorable or palatable in any way.”
