3 best dystopian movies on Netflix you can stream right now
From an all-time action flick to a gory psychological thriller

Netflix subscribers clearly have an appetite for dystopian movies right now, as the entire "Maze Runner" trilogy was just sitting in Netflix's top 10 movies chart in the US, just over a week after the YA sci-fi movies landed on one of the best streaming services (and the first movie's still there now).
After they climbed into Netflix's charts, and the recent success of "The Long Walk," I figured there's probably a great chance Netflix viewers are interested in tracking down more worthwhile watches.
I've scrolled through the streamer's categories and highlighted three of the best dystopian movies that you can stream on Netflix right now.
'The Kitchen'
Directed by Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya, "The Kitchen" is a British dystopian watch that centers on an embattled social housing community in London known as "The Kitchen." There, we meet Izi ("Top Boy" star and rapper Kano, aka Kane Robinson), a man who is on the cusp of escaping the complex, if he can make the deposit on an upmarket apartment in time.
At a funeral, Izi crosses paths with 12-year-old Benji (Jedaiah Bannerman) and, upon realizing he can no longer afford to live in his mother's apartment, Izi takes him in, and we follow as the pair forge a bond and navigate life at "The Kitchen" as the city around it continues to turn on its residents. It's solid, socially-charged speculative fiction with heart.

'Mad Max: Fury Road' (2015)
"Mad Max: Fury Road" is objectively one of the most explosive action movies you can watch, period. It's visceral, high-octane stuff of the highest order, channeled through the madness of George Miller's chaotic, post-apocalyptic world — and it's an utter delight.

It transports us to a desert wasteland, where Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) teams up with Furiosa (Charlize Theron) to help save Immortan Joe's "wives" from the terrifying warlord. Cue a gripping chase/road battle that sees our heroes speeding off in the War Rig, with Joe's War Boys in hot pursuit. If you want a dose of adrenaline, this is the movie to stream.

'The Platform' (2019)
If you want a darker watch, Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia's "The Platform" is the Netflix movie to turn to. Here, we watch as criminals are imprisoned on different floors of a massive facility known as "The Pit", dominated by a huge vertically-moving platform.
That platform is laden with food, and as it descends through the facility, prisoners can eat what they want while it's on their level (but aren't allowed to store any for later). This means those at the bottom only have access to what's left on the platform, which almost ensures conflict erupts between the inmates. It's a gory, intense film, and certainly more intense than "The Maze Runner," but worth seeking out if you can stomach its grisly side.

If it’s in the theaters or available to stream somewhere, he’s probably watched it… especially if it has a dragon in it. Before joining the team, he was a Staff Writer at What To Watch where he wrote about a broad range of shows that stretched from "Doctor Who" and "The Witcher" to "Bridgerton" and "Love Island". When he’s not watching the next must-see movie or show, he’s probably still in front of a screen playing massive RPGs, reading, spending a fortune on TCGs, or watching the NFL.
