Obsbot Meet Flip review: my new tiny work-call companion

The Obsbot Meet Flip is one of the smallest webcams we’ve tested, but is it one of the best webcams? As much as I like it, I’m not sure.

The camera is highly portable and easy to set up. The 4K quality is ideal for making you look clear, and the companion software lets you make any adjustments you may need. The flip camera lens is also great for privacy and adjusting angles.

If you’re looking for a tiny, portable webcam, the Obsbot Meet Flip is a great choice. It’s simple to use and comes with companion software to make it your own.

About as small as you can get

If portability is your main concern when it comes to choosing the perfect webcam, the Obsbot Meet Flip is the one for you. It’s an ideal choice for anyone who needs a camera to go with their laptop, as it’s lightweight and won’t weigh the screen down in the same way as something like the Dell Pro 7 Webcam ($199).

The Obsbot Meet Flip measures 1.8 x 1.6 x 0.7 inches when folded, and 1.6 x 1.5 x 1.3 inches when open. The only webcam we’ve tested that’s smaller is the Opal Tadpole ($129), which is 1.5 x 1.3 x 0.7 inches when operational.

Having a small webcam like the Meet Flip means you can throw it in your bag and have it ready to go whenever you need it. And because it folds up, the lens won’t get any scratches when it's in your bag.

Couldn’t be easier

There was no fuss when setting up the Obsbot Meet Flip. The camera comes with a five-foot USB-C cable that plugs into the back of the camera. As soon as this is connected to your computer, it becomes operational. You just have to make sure the camera is selected as your video input for Google Meet, Teams, or whatever video calling software you’re using.

Clear image

The first thing I noticed about the Meet Flip was the clear image. The camera shoots in 4K at 30 frames per second, so I looked crisp, and my movements were smooth.

It’s worth noting that the camera is warm-toned, so if this isn’t for you, I’d recommend the Insta360 Link 2C Pro ($199) for a more natural look. However, I liked the warmth the camera added, as I think it made me look more professional.

Special effects

The Meet Flip is compatible with Obsbot Centre. This downloadable software gives you access to special effects for the webcam, such as backgrounds and color effects. Customization with backgrounds is useful as you can look like you’re in an office for a more professional look, or like you’re at the park.

When using the software, you can also use hand gestures to use the 4x digital zoom. However, for the framing to be effective, you need to stay within the frame, which I’ll talk about later.

Flip down for privacy

If you need to quickly turn off your camera while in a meeting but don’t want to head into your camera settings, you can simply flip the Meet Flip down. Folding the lens away puts the camera into sleep mode and assures complete privacy.

But that’s not the only thing the Flip is good for. Slightly folding the webcam up and down will guarantee you the perfect camera angle. I found it useful because I like to move around when I’m working to get a change of scenery, but that means my laptop is always placed at different heights. Having the option to flip and fold the camera meant I could make sure I was always in frame and getting my best angle.

Obsbot Meet Flip review: The downs

While I mostly love the Obsbot Meet Flip, the tracking capabilities aren’t as good as other options on the market, and the built-in microphone left me disappointed.

Stay in field of view for framing

When using the Obsbot Centre software, you can enable auto-tracking. However, this won’t be the best option if you are presenting and moving around. You still need to sit within the field of view of the camera.

If you want something with actual tracking capabilities, look to the Insta360 Link 2C Pro ($199). This camera smoothly follows you around the room by cropping the image, making the tracking feel more like a more expensive gimbal-tracking camera.

The Meet Flip, on the other hand, just uses zoom to follow you around the frame, and this is nowhere near as smooth as the results you get from the Insta360, but you’d expect that since it’s $80 more expensive.

Can you hear me?

There are a few audio modes on the Obsbot Meet Flip through the Obsbot Centre, including Directional mode, Dual-directional mode, Smart omni mode and Pure audio mode. It’s great to have options depending on your environment, but I don’t think they worked that well.

When I took some recordings with the microphone, I couldn’t hear much of a difference between the modes, and I don’t think my voice sounded any clearer between them. I much prefer the way I sound when using the built-in microphone of my MacBook Pro M2. That said, the mic was good enough to make sure my voice was audible on work calls.

Obsbot Meet Flip review: Verdict

The Obsbot Meet Flip is incredibly small, so it’s easy to throw in your bag and take with you anywhere. The setup of the camera is very simple; you just have to plug in the USB-C cord, and it starts working immediately.

The 4K image quality is very impressive, and you can see me in detail. But don't worry, if it’s not a good hair or makeup day, you can use the Obsbot Centre companion software to make adjustments. Angle adjustments are easy, since the hinged flip-for-privacy feature also lets you position the camera to your liking.

However, the tracking on the camera isn’t as smooth as other options on the market, and the microphone performance was a letdown. But for something so tiny and portable, you may think these trade-offs are worth it.
