Britain to Install CCTV Cameras in Private Homes

- By - Source : Tom's Hardware US

The British government has announced plans to install CCTV cameras in 20,000 UK homes.

The UK government this week announced that it will spend £400 million ($668 million) on the installation and monitoring of CCTV cameras citizens in their own homes. Aimed at problem or antisocial families, the cameras are there to make sure children go to bed on time, eat well balanced meals and do their homework.

Already in operation in roughly 2,000 homes, the Daily Express reports that these Family Intervention Projects cost between £5,000 and £20,000 per family and include private security guards who conduct home checks on the families.

The news comes just a couple of weeks after Amazon.com's decision to delete copies of 1984 and Animal Farm from customers' Kindles in what the media described as an Orwellian move. You guys reacted pretty strongly to that story, so what are your thoughts on this? Do you think it’s the government's place to police parenting and ensure children don't go astray or do you think this is the government sticking its nose in where it doesn't belong? Let us know!

The EU should sue Britain, then insist that these families be given a ballot to select which type of camera will invade their privacy.

I think this is a joke to get a rouse. If not, we aren't hearing of the horrible things these parents were accused of to get their privacy revoked.

Suddenly I'm proud to be an American again! At least our Gov't doesn't publicly invade our privacy, they have the common courtesy to be sneaky about it!

Holy crap. I am glad I don't live there, but I think we may be closer to this ourselves here in the U.S.A. than we realize. By the way, what do you think of the Obama/ Joker posters in appearing in LA? To true!

No, some of the fucking scum families over here need to be monitored 24/7 so we know where they are and what they're doing.

I can think of 3 in my street who are prime candidates. The only problem I have is the expense - I'm already paying for their drug and booze abuse through their unemployment benefit and now I have to pay again.

Of course you could always execute them, but that's going far too Nazi as wiping out waster chavs and such scum is pretty much ethnic cleansing.

Kids are just too much overhead for average families. Their upbringing should be outsourced. I can see overseas service firms specializing in remote child-rearing. An advantage of this is that if they grow up to be psychopaths you can sue the firms for defective service (too much organic food, not enough X-Box time, etc.) Now all you need is to have the government pay for it.

It's Britain now, later it will be the US. I think as time go on, we are losing our liberty and freedom.

I am so ROTFLMAO that I don't know where to start. I am amazed about how much of those crap British citizens can endure without a revolt. The more I look at it, the more I admire the wisdom of the Founding Fathers of the US. It's better to get out of that pathetic politics of Statism and Nannyism sooner than later. Freedom worked in 1776 and still works today. Nevertheless, I hope that enough Americans are wise enough to realize it and refuse any encroachment of freedom.

And Michael Savage is still banned from entering UK for being the "white-and-Jewish" quota on the Unwelcome List of United Kingdom. That alone tells us how ridiculous the current UK government can be. If Tories don't win the next round, BNP might win the next next Parliamentary election.

"War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength" anyone?
What is the world coming to..this is totally f**ked up. They are on a slippery slope. Pretty soon the so called Great Britain will be under Ingsoc (for those who don't know, read Orwell's 1984)

You think this could not happen in the United States? Hmmm, I wonder how many people would not have thought that government run health care would never be possible?

I think they need to slect which families this occours too, maybe families with a history of child abuse otherwise in britian initiate a citizen public referendum

I would seriously hope they have this on a closed-loop network. The last thing you need is for these cameras to start feeding Youtube.

I say if the parents aren't willing to raise their own kids, someone's gotta do it.

This can not happen in America without a major change to our constitution. Thanks to Amendment IV we wont have cameras in our living rooms. Now we just need to wake up and realize the patriot act violates this.

Health Care is never addressed in the Constitution.

How about you people try different approach called "Second Amendment" and give pardon to Tony Martin.

And what exactly does that have to do with this CCTV article?

This is pretty crazy lol, if they are such bad parents they need to have cameras monitoring them they really should just take the kids. But I guess installing a camera is a lot cheaper than foster care.

@LePhuronn
+1
u guys in the U.S.A. have no idea of the situation with some of the familys hell areas of britan
u think a trailer park is bad? try a council block of flats then tell me u dont want the phuckers cctv'd
sad truth? most of the familys that will have this installed will find the cameras steal them and sell them and thats a fact
@chaohsiangchen
dont quote or comment about our political situation lets face it u have no right
the goverment we have in charge at the momment isnt the one we voted for its the one we recieved when tony blair stepped down and we got gordon friggin brown the one eye troll
and if his goverment system wants to implement this then i wouldnt be suprised and actually think in light of the baby P incident this is a step in the right way as part of the "drastic shake up" that weve been promised for all too long
and with regards to a revolt theres little to revolt for
riots in the street over what?
the guys in charge screwed up no one who wants in could do much better
FACT
about the biggest thing is being part of the sodding EU that would be the only reason to riot and us leaveing that is NEVER going to happen no matter who we vote for

There are a lot of wacko families out there, that should not even raise up any children!

But who in the world is going to monitor them? I'd spray all the cams that come into my house with black paint!
Let's see if they plan to come to replace/clean that cam every week!

Most likely it are those people who're just too wacko to be left alone, but are too normal to be taken into a nuthouse...

Whilst this is a ridiculous situation, it is not for people from other countries to make comment without taking a look at the situation in their own country first. Every country has it's issues, Britain included. And anyone who gets all overly patriotic wants to be wary of coming across xenophobic and most likely racist. Usually these are the same people who have no fucking idea what actually happens outside of their own little world. And, without wanting to start a great big international flaming match, I have it on good authority that the U.S. news reports on little else other than the U.S.

I'd also like to point out to my countrymen that don't like the UK that it is, for the most part, an awesome place to live. Try and educate yourselves on the entire world situation and our place in it. Whether we aren't the greatest country in the world is irrelevant. I'm guessing you are the same sad fuckers that complain about the amount of tax you pay every month (assuming you're employed) and then bitch about the lack of police or the fact that your bins only get emptied fortnightly. Ignorant dickheads. Try and look at the bigger picture.

I have a great respect for all countries and their citizens, and the pros and cons of different ways of life. No respect at all for the ignorant though.

And if you're gonna slag off Gordon Brown, use your own words, not Jeremy Clarksons. You penis.
