Many EA Sports developers walked away when the company focused on the casual gamer.

According to Develop Online, EA Sports' Peter Moore spoke during a keynote address at the Edinburgh Interactive conference held earlier today, blaming the casual gamer for the loss of many EA Sports staff members. More specifically, he pointed the finger at Nintendo's Wii console and the huge load of casual gamers tagging along.

For a company that has spent decades creating super-realistic gamers for core players, many of the in-house developers were left bewildered, he indicated. Before the Wii, sports games were used to show how realistic games had become over the previous year

"But then this thing [the Wii] came along and presented us with some challenges," he explained. "The dynamics changed with the launch of the Wii--play and fun was coming back in, the demographic was changing enormously, and the amount of time to play was being compressed."

Apparently EA Sports developers viewed Wii Sports as a huge competition, an interactive sports title that came free with the console. Because they were too accustomed in developing detailed games for core gamers, they were unwilling to tackle titles for a general audience, the casual gamer.

"[They] couldn't take the change of pace," he added. "It was hard. A lot of people at that time thought they would move on from our studios--they wanted to chase the core consumer."

Moore said that EA Sports learned from the change and has established itself a "position with social and family entertainment."

Businesses need to adapt and make things people want. Not try to tell people they want things that they make. And him saying the dynamics were changing and fun was coming back in? is that some kind of joke? I feel that games should always focus on fun first, then worry about making the game look pretty.

Well, if they adapt to this developing area of gaming they would make more money, not that EA needs any of that. Either you accept change and change or you're out.

The Wii is a joke with sports games. The graghics stink and it plays slow. The controls don't work anything like they should. Ea should can Football on the Wii and focus on PS3 and 360. The Wii is
a child's machine, let them play mario football.

what do you expect? it's EA. Electronic Arts is too big. they need to get taken down a peg or two at some point. I miss the days of yore when small time companies made big time games. Like when blizzard started up, and just before ID software hit the big time. They didn't HAVE big advertising dollars but what they did have was an awesome game that people bought because it was awesome. Kind of like viral video's, people like it, so they watch it. and most of it is through word of mouth, via the community. Which is a more trusted source for "quality" entertainment. I use the quotes because i don't consider viral video's quality entertainment. a cheap, quick laugh and that's about it, haha.
Point being I really don't look at a title unless it's recommended to me or it sparks my interest through a review or an honorable mention from someone who knows their games or has similar likes and dislikes as I do. EA doesn't have much of that going on.

"The dynamics changed with the launch of the Wii--play and fun was coming back in".
I that about sums it up for EA sports games. Recycling the same games over and over and over again with better graphics doesn't and didn't make the games any better.

EA had great arcade sport division called EA Big...

along with Street games that were FUN to play with friends, it also had SSX which was one of my favorite game series of all time...

till travesty called SSX on Tour came along which ruined any hopes of following game SSX Blur....

EA Sports just has too much resources on repeating games like Madden and Tiger Woods and not enough for games like SSX and Street games....

The Wii is pretty much garbage. My girlfriend begged and begged for one at the height of it's popularity, forcing me to run all over hell's half acre to track one down. During the search, I convinced myself that it was gonna be an awesomely fun machine. My friends that managed to score one told me all about how it's more fun than turning water to wine.

She's put maybe 2 hours into Zelda and that's it. We play Wii sports for maybe 30 minutes to an hour everytime someone "new" comes over to the house, but that's about it. It just sits there and collects dust.

The x360 and our PC's on the other hand, get used quite a bit. My new addiction on xbox is Gears of War 2. Phenominal game. Graphics, sound, artwork, gameplay, and controls are all spot-on. GoW2 simply couldn't be done on the Wii. Not just because it's graphics suck, but because the controls have alot of "slop" in them.

The Wii was a good idea that sold a boatload of hardware. Then again, so was a Furby. And you see how that worked out.

What a whiny little bitch... Deal with it. Just because you didn't have much competition before doesn't mean that's how it's always going to be.

I'm with them. wanna know why games devs get paid a lot less than normal IT guys? cause we do it for the love of it. I can understand why they would walk off when the best gaming device on the market is an archaic backwards piece of overpriced shit that is more useful for practicing masturbation than enjoying a good, immersive, challenging game.

Way to go EA !! You piss off your PC gamers by not releasing products like Madden 2009 or 2010 and now you blame Wii for taking customers away. Maybe it is time to look at your business practices and see what you can do to get those customers back. I for one have stopped supporting EA since they decided that PC gamers are not worth the trouble.

EA has really gone in the crapper! First, they piss off their PC customers by not releasing titles like Madden 09 or 10, now they blame the Wii for taking their 'casual gamers'. Stop pointing fingers at everyone else for your own failures. Take a look at yourself and see what EA can do to get PC and 'casual gamers' back. I for one have stopped supporting EA ever since they decided that PC gamers did not matter.

I don't think doing the same sport game year after year is what I call... impressive...

I basically boycotted EA back when they essentially gave the previous generation to Sony by refusing to support the Dreamcast.

"How dare a console encourage people to game for fun! WE HERE AT EA WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS!"

FUN WTH FUN?!?! wth is that doing in a game, EA can't compete with such egregious expectation of a game being fun.

Just when I thought EA was starting to not blow as bad as they did recently, they come out with these idiot comments....
I started to hate EA when they gave making their first James Bond game for the N64 a try, it was GARBAGE compared to RARE's Goldeneye, I was disgusted, ashamed, and sad.

icepick314 if your playing games on a Wii and there not slow and the graphic's don't stink then you must be playing Mario World #117. I
have rented and played most of the sports titles and they are crap compaired to anything on the PS3 or 360. You say they have a ton of good games, i say they have a big collection of junk. Out of the 200 titles they have i'd say 7 are worth buying. I gues if your a 9 year old than your probably in seven heaven with Bomber Man.

Its true, a developer focus years on creating realistic looking games to only be down-played by a console that the "casual" gamer would only use for 20 minutes. I say they should turn the "casual" gamer into one who looks forward in game development for the hardcore gaming experience. I would have left EA too. If you want casual to be associated with your games, start making games whose title starts with "Hanna Montana"... and forget why you ever entered in the gaming world after that.

Casual gaming should be a minority now as it was in the past. Gaming shouldn't have to dumb itself down to people's lack of interest and ADD.
It's sad to see that video games are taking the same route that the music industry has and catering to the stupid masses instead of working for the fans.
Why is everyone so Wii-tarded?

To guitarpeggio... the reason why the gaming industry is targeting the masses is because by definition of masses, it means a big group... much bigger than the fans, no matter how big the fan base can be... the masses of casual gamer is where the real money is... I couldn't agree more that the Wii might not be the right machine for the hardcore gamer... however, for casual gamer and for those who used to be a hardcore gamer but now for work and life reason has grew up and stop playing games (me and many of my friends), the Wii is the perfect machine to bring us back to the gaming industry... their game is short and sweet, it is intuitive and most of all, they are fun and even more fun with a group... I who has grew up from Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega, PS1, PS2, Xbox 360 (I skip Xbox) and PS3, used to be addicted to games and consider myself a hardcore gamer, but as time passes, it is hard for people who has real life commitments to spend hours and hours to play a game, just so that he or she will be good enough to get to the next stage... people just want something fast and easy... I understand that will means that my Wii do indeed sit there idle and collecting dust most of the time, but for most people who are not hardcore gamer, we don't play video games every day for like 3 to 5 hours daily... so the Wii serve it's purpose...
