Nintendo's Satoru Iwata: iPad Has "No Surprises"

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Satoru Iwata was unimpressed with Apple's new iPad.

Nintendo's Satoru Iwata on Friday dismissed Apple's newly-unveiled iPad tablet, saying that the device doesn't offer any new surprises. In fact, he said it looked more like a big iPod Touch, leaving him virtually unimpressed. His view echos many verbal impressions made by critics and Apple loyalists alike since its big reveal back on Wednesday.

"There were no surprises for me," he admitted.

He also shared the same lackluster enthusiasm towards the use of 3D in gaming. "I have doubts whether people will be wearing glasses to play games at home,” he told the Press Association. "How is that going to look to other people?"

Although Iwata welcomes 3D movies such as James Cameron's Avatar, he doesn't expect 3D gaming to really catch on.

In the same briefing, Iwata also denied rumors about the company working on a DS system with built-in motion sensing technology. He also denied rumors about Nintendo working on a new Wii that will sport HD graphics. "I question whether those features would be enough to get people to buy new machines," he said of the DS.

Iwata did admit that Nintendo engineers are currently working on new consoles, however he did not provide any additional details. Iwata also did not specify if he would or would not purchase the Apple iPad, as it would make an excellent high-dollar drink tray as shown here by Pee-Wee Herman.

Since when has 1024x768 been "HD"? ...I guess you could call it "HD" because it's greater than VGA resolution, but it certainly isn't full HD. (I am rather unimpressed with the pixel density as well. I would rather have FWVGA on a 3.7" screen than XGA res on a 10" screen.

i think no one is surprised with any of their products. they just make something that exist, better, or more expensive.

So I'm guessing this guy has never seen people play with their Wii's.

So is this about the iPad?
Or nintendo's supposed endeavors towards the Wii, DS and opinion of 3D gaming...

The cause of this article has lost me, and I begin to wander, due to Herman's currenty reputation, to with what he filled those cups with.

Awesome! They could use the touch screen to display virtual beer mats underneath. Would look very snazzy at the snobs dinner parties and that.

Uhm, so gamers care about "how that is going to look to other people" or Nintendo is not fit to play "nice 3D pictures" game?

hakesterman :
1024x768 Resolution on a 12 inch devise is awsome and i would consider it HD. The differance betweenthat and 1080P on that size screen would be marginal. The quality lost VS. the price adjustment is wellworth it. Were not talking about a 55 inch Widescreen TV, were talking 12 inch screen size, it's going tobe awsome.

But where is the price adjustment going? I could find a 12in LCD TV at 720p for less than 100$ 5x times less than the ipad, granted the smaller tech of the ipad is going to drive up the cost, but if we are talking solely screen resolution, a small tv is the better option.

So what else do you gain for a product that offers less options than the current ipod touches/phones? Let me see you put that in your back pocket for mobility, Trying hooking up your headphones and go running.
You could buy a netbook or small laptop for less than an ipad and get more use out of it, so far current ipod touch/phone users have no reason aside from fanboyism to make the switch.
Okay ebooks are going to come up too. Great, its a shame that the B&N nook, and Amazon kindle are still around 200$ less than the iPad, and I'll tell you right now Hi-def book reading isn't going to change the experiance.

Ultimatly I don't think at 500$ a 16GB HDD, 12in device, with a 9.5in screen is worth it because of its resolution. Especially when cheaper 12in screen, 160GB HDD netbooks offer everything(minus touchscreen), an iPad will at much less the price.

Pee-wee got one thing wrong an iphone os will let you listen to music and surf google maps at the same time just like the commercials with at&t you can make a call and surf the internet at the same time.
The ipad is just a large ipod touch with a very expensive screen which they make you pay for. I bet that alone add $150 to the price. The only thing that really bothers me about it is how apple and jobs keep talking about it’s a magical and revolutionary device. Apple is the only company that can just plain lie and get away with it.
