Facebook Plans to Increase Staff by 50 Percent
Are you an out of work engineer? Try Facebook.
It's been a rough year in the tech industry with many companies choosing to lay off employees to cut costs. However, while the likes of Microsoft and MySpace have cut their numbers, Facebook plans to increase its staff by a whopping 50 percent.
CEO and founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, has said that the current economy has been great for the company because no one else has been hiring.
“No one else has been hiring,” Zuckerberg, 25, said in an interview, according to Bloomberg. “It’s been a great environment for us because the economy has helped out.”
Bloomberg cites the 25-year-old entrepreneur plans to expand staff by as much as 50 percent this year as it benefits from a surplus of engineers amid the recession.

Smart Move for Facebook. Take the Good Engineers for below how much they would normally make.
good thing for me too, cause FB has been soooo glitchy lately, i get a "we're sorry" error like every five clicks when using it. I like FB and I hope this hiring spree will actually bring some fixes.
In this kind of economy, FB probably hire quite a few talented programmers out there.
The United States has a shortage of engineers... I don't think any licensed engineers are out of work unless they choose to be. Should read "Are you an out of work communications major?"

People use the term "Engineer" too loosely these days.
yeah, umm, you realize you need to pay them right? How does facebook make money, does anyone know?
+1 to doomtomb

Our group has been trying to grow by 40-50% and it's been hard to find suitable candidates. We've interviewed a ton of people but so far we've only hired a few.
Well, good luck Facebook, I'll be quitting in a while.

Facebook makes money from all those ads plastered on their website and from those gifts people give to others.
Never underestimate the ignorance of startup owners when it comes to a.) planning and b.) hiring practices.
Maybe they're staffing now to get people at a much lower salary rate. When things start turning around FB could possibly have a solid group of developers for a much cheaper cost as compared with getting them while dev's are in high demand.
