Facebook's CEO on Privacy: We Missed the Mark

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

In a guest post for the Washinton Post, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has admitted that the social networking website 'missed the mark' when it came to privacy and reiterated head of public policy Tim Sparapani's promise for more simplistic privacy tools.

Zuckerberg says that Facebook still operates by the same policy it did when it started six years ago – If people have control over what they share, they will want to share more and a more open and connected world is a better world.

However the CEO did concede that the company's effort to make privacy settings granular may not be what everyone wanted.

"We have heard the feedback," Mr. Zuckerberg writes. "There needs to be a simpler way to control your information. In the coming weeks, we will add privacy controls that are much simpler to use."

Zuckerberg also promised an easy way to turn off all third-party services, a major concern for those worried that information shared on Facebook was being shared with external companies. These fears were only compounded when the social network automatically opted everyone into the 'Instant Personalization Pilot Program.' The Program involves sharing certain amounts with Facebook's partners like Microsoft and Yelp. In return users experience a more 'social experience' when visiting partners' websites.

"We are working hard to make these changes available as soon as possible," Zuckerberg promised. "We hope you'll be pleased with the result of our work and, as always, we'll be eager to get your feedback."

He also attempted to quell beliefs that information is used in ways users don't want by offering the following principals under which Facebook operates:

-- You have control over how your information is shared.

-- We do not share your personal information with people or services you don't want.

-- We do not give advertisers access to your personal information.

-- We do not and never will sell any of your information to anyone.

You better eat your words Mark if you want anyone to stay around.

Couldn't have said it better!
Never used Facebook, never will. Condolences to those who do. Mark has flat out stated what he "really" thinks about you.

I'd love to see how the "opt out of all third party services" goes over with Zuckerberg's business squad. With that feature, Facebook will be worthless when everyone opts out of advertising.

Google and Facebook share the same fundamental business problem: The bulk majority of their potential revenue is generated by advertising to people who don't really want to be advertised to.

Facebook is incredibly over-valued in my opinion; the technology is new and the first few buyers tossed out some valuations, but in the end it will bust when advertisers don't get the business they expect from advertising on Facebook.

Welcome to the technological age of the internet. Where even immature, irresponsible frat boys can own their own empire!

It's worth noting that once you post on facebook, you do agree to the terms that all info posted is no longer "personal information" thus it's grossly misleading that they keep repeating that "We do not share your personal information" - of course they don't, but once you post on Facebook, it's no longer personal, it's public, and so they are misleading with terms. Read the freaking terms of use and stop being outraged over things which are clearly stated.

They hit their mark. They just didn't expect the outcry from people whose identity is being stolen.

That's exactly my point. If 'tayb' thinks it is easy, then he missed a ton of stuff. You have to check even little things like who can see your pictures, albums, wall posts, message you, see your birth date, your location, your email address, your phone number (there's a line item for every piece of info or item you add or upload).

It's extremely annoying, inefficient, and obviously seems to lean toward keeping your information PUBLIC. Everything you add to your Profile (let alone videos, photos, audio, etc) is all searchable through Google. So everything you post on Facebook can be found by ANYONE even if you generally mark your account as "Friends Only". All your stuff is still searchable. You have to actually tick "Private" for every tiny thing in your profile. It's utterly ridiculous.

I've used facebook in the past but was sharp enough to not put in any important personal information (the same with any website I do not intend to order goods from). So glad of that now.

You are equating quantity with difficulty. I think annoying would be a better word. You have to select "friends only" on 40 something different options and opt out of several things but it's not difficult at all. It's annoying going through all of that but it isn't confusing in the slightest.

I am sure he has learned to be a mature CEO since those words spoken in private to a friend. If I gave you my private info while you were in college, you'd probably call me a dumb fuck in an email to your buddy too.

If you exploded into a corporation and suddenly had the responsibility of being a CEO of a huge company, you're bound to think differently, and I'm sure Zucker is now.

That said, Facebook's privacy settings are kind of dumb and he has stated they're working to change them.

I didn't miss anything. You guys are reading these sensationalist headlines and not actually logging into facebook and looking at the privacy stuff. It takes five minutes to change every single privacy option on facebook to "friends only" or "only me." You can't find me by google searching, you can't find me by facebook searching, and if you aren't a direct friend of mine (not friend of friend) you can't see anything on my wall or anything about me. You can't even message me if you aren't a friend of a friend.

It is not difficult. Annoying? Yes. Difficult? No. You guys are acting like it takes an hour to change your settings. It doesn't. It's not that hard.

There is a flaw in the privacy settings though. If you have your wall set to "Everyone" thinking that's no big deal and you have your Photos set to "Friends only", anyone commenting on your photos then shows up on your wall, allowing everyone to see that particular photo and in turn, any photo that has ever been commented on, basically making your photos public when you chose private.

Wow, what a bunch of bullshit. Facebook's entire business model is built around advertising, thats where they get their money. They didnt miss the mark, or drop the ball on privacy concerns. THEY SOLD US OUT! Whatever appeasements they are claiming to make will still be with their advertisers interests first, and ours second. This is all just a bunch of sugar coated nonsense to ease peoples fears so they can continue to do business as usual.

When are companies going to start pulling their Facebook accounts? The only reason these FB wankers are getting away with treating users like crap is because they are still being supported by all the "dumb f**ks". Come on guys, get smart and delete your profiles.

It's ridiculous how many privacy settings boxes there are to change from "everyone" to "just friends"; it's like there's one for every line item. And each time they put in a new one the box is either checked or it says "everyone". You have to be very proactive in monitoring it, and I would be the majority of tech-unsavy people don't.

How about just one freaking box that said "block my damn profile from everyone but friends"?

Missed the 'Mark?' I think Facebook could be better off without him. He seems like a "dumb fuck" to me. Somebody needs to eat their own words about privacy. If you call your users, "dumb fucks" to a media source, guess what? That's right, probably should've kept that one to yourself, "dumb fuck".

to find it 4 yourself, type how to delete face book you will get this link. Join Me and many to get rid of ur accounts, reclaim your privacy, and get out into the world and meet you old school friends at the beach instead of some chat room, get some Sun and catch up with your mates.
Best of luck all chopping off the face book tentacles

Too little, too late. I've already deleted my account. I am appalled by Facebooks attitude towards its users and would only support such business practices if I stayed with them. They are free to do whatever they want with what they have of mine since that is their policy of "ownership" of anything you put on there site, although they don't have much.

"Facebook's CEO on Privacy: We Missed the Mark"

For the rest of us:

"Facebook's CEO on Privacy: Well we got caught finally selling our subscribers info 6 ways to Sunday. I guess we'll have to do just enough now to prevent the goverment from looking into our practices."
