Facebook Lets You Download Your Entire Profile

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Mark Zuckerberg and the guys at Facebook have shouldered a lot of criticism regarding user privacy over the last year or so. Yesterday the social networking site announced a couple of new features intent on "giving users back control."

The first of these features is an apps dashboard that allows you to see more clearly what permissions each application has. Though Facebook has always provided a long check list of app permissions allowing you to pick and choose what information you share with applications, this should make it easier for people to understand which apps are accessing what. The dashboard will show you when an application last accessed your data and if you don’t like what you see you can change the permissions of each application or remove it all together.

Second comes the ability to download all of your Facebook activity to you computer. Everything you've ever posted on Facebook can now be downloaded as a zip file. This includes photos, status information, wall posts, and messages. To stop people on shared computers downloading the information of another user, Facebook says you'll have to input your password as well as answer relevant security questions.

Though these new features are interesting and could definitely prove useful, the biggest new addition is Groups. Some people might already make use of the ability to group certain friends together under a certain label via Facebook's Lists feature. Groups builds on that experience by offering you a way to share with just a specific group rather than your entire list of friends. However, while people using Lists may have grouped their relatives together with the intention of blocking them from seeing certain photo albums, status updates or tagged photos, this new version of Groups is aimed at people who want to share more information with just specific groups

"We've long heard that people would find Facebook more useful if it were easier to connect with smaller groups of their friends instead of always sharing with everyone they know," writes Mark Zuckerberg. "Until now, Facebook has made it easy to share with all of your friends or with everyone, but there hasn't been a simple way to create and maintain a space for sharing with the small communities of people in your life, like your roommates, classmates, co-workers and family."

Groups allows you to do just that. Let's say you want to make a group for the fantasy hockey league you're running. Once you're done adding everyone in the league, you'll have what's essentially a shared Facebook profile that every member has the ability to access and publish posts and photos to. Though these Groups pages can be open and viewable to the public, the default setting is closed, so no one can see what you and your group is talking about or sharing. To compliment this feature, Facebook is also adding Group chat so when you're on your group's page, you can start a chat that gets sent to every member.

Though it's definitely useful for clubs, roommates and colleagues, Groups doesn't really add any functionality to Lists, which has always been kind of hard to manage and difficult to maintain. While Facebook touts Groups as a way to share new information with a specific group of people, many users are busy trying to figure out how to keep their grandparents from seeing photos they've already published. For now it seems the finicky Lists feature is still the best way to do that.

"Giving users back control". Control that should have never left the users hands.

I actually VERY much appreciate the ability to group friends. Not all of my friends mix well together.

First of all, I like having the ability to download your profile and look at it. This way, you can analyze exactly what personal information you have on your profile so you know what to get rid of/change. I think there should be a setting so you can download different versions of your profile, what your friends see and what is meant to be private to those that aren't your friends.

Secondly, they should've had the GROUPS feature YEARS ago. MySpace already had it, so I don't see why not. Of course I know MySpace is totally different, in that you just post on someone's profile, not to individual threads on someone's profile and there's no way to distinguish between different groups of friends, but you could at least use the feature to VIEW different groups.

Well done Facebook! You just made a hacker/crackers life MUCH easier. It saves them having to manually copy stuff.

ehh, i dont think hackers and crackers is the thing to worry about. the only thing to worry about is stupid people having another password to give out and blame other people for getting their data exploited. I've never once lost my account to a single hacker, simply because you can't really "hack" someones profile; you can only give your password out to the public. the idea of having everything downloaded into a zip file is kind of pointless i think. Its basically like filming yourself killing someone. no one witnesses it in the first place, but if the tape is found, its proof you did it. So whats the purpose of the tape? same as for the profile downloading..why would i want to relook through everything i've ever posted?

Nice recycle. They gave access to the users to a functionality that was used before only in the backend to obtain all profile infos in one click, for some purpose that I don't want to think of.

Facebook sure offers a lot of convenient tools lately! Downloadable profiles will be great for government agencies and police forces to get everything you've ever said or shown on Facebook. And closed groups will be perfect for pedophile rings.

Keep up the good work!

Groups are very useful. My Dad could care less about KoRn's latest video but some of my friends are all over it.

Not long until a phishing attack surfaces that seeks to gain access to people's accounts, download their contents and then sell the data to third-party advertisers for profit.

Hmm.. how about Law enforcement, etc? They too now have an easier time going through your stuff. Btw, having JUST a strong pass is not enough. There are MANY keyloggers out there. If you REALLY wanted to, it's pretty damn easy to install a key logger on to a PC at a cyber cafe, library, school PCs, etc. It only takes a little bit of know how. A good script kiddie could do it.

really good point. I suppose this is why i choose to use my own computer with my own security software to prevent keyloggers from having a chance. not to mention i kind of find it common sense not to log in to things like my bank account on computers other than my own that are on my network.

it's a tough balancing act: to be able to share and yet to still retain some privacy. i use FB to broadcast my life and email for more private messages to selected recipients.

The users willingly relinquish controls in the first place. Just by joining facebook, you know what you're getting into.
