Netflix just added a psychological thriller series that’s already crashed the top 10 — and it could be your next binge-watch
‘Angela’ is the Spanish adaptation of the British thriller ‘Angela Black’

Netflix’s top 10 list has a new contender this week, and this time it comes from Spain. “Angela,” a psychological thriller series adapted from the British drama “Angela Black,” first aired in its native country last year before quietly making its way to Netflix U.S. on September 26.
It didn’t stay quiet for long though, as the show has already climbed to the No. 5 spot, overtaking massive hits like “Alice in Borderland” and “Wednesday” (as of September 29).
At its core, “Angela” follows a woman who seems to have the perfect marriage and family life, only to reveal the dark reality of domestic abuse lurking beneath the surface. When an old acquaintance suddenly re-enters her life, long-hidden secrets begin to emerge, and her carefully constructed world teeters on the brink of collapse.
The show’s fast climb is especially impressive considering international titles sometimes take a while to build traction on Netflix’s charts, if they manage to chart at all. The fact that “Angela” has reached the top five proves it’s already resonating with viewers craving something tense, dark, and twist-heavy.
So, if you’ve spotted “Angela” climbing the rankings and are wondering whether to stream it, here’s what you should know about the series before adding it to your Netflix watchlist.
‘Angela’ on Netflix — should you stream it?
“Angela” is more of a slow-burn, tension-filled ride than a fast-paced thriller. If you enjoy shows that take time building suspense and developing the world around its characters, this series is likely to be your next engaging binge-watch.
Being a Spanish adaptation of “Angela Black,” the show keeps the same core premise but brings its own flavor with native settings and cultural context. In fact, much of the series was filmed across the Basque Country, with key scenes shot in towns like Mungia, Mundaka, and Bermeo, as well as the coastal city of Bilbao.

These locations not only give the story a distinctive visual identity but help ground the psychological drama in a real, tangible world.
Directed by Norberto López Amado, the series revolves around Ángela (Verónica Sánchez), a woman whose life looks picture-perfect on the outside: a husband, kids, and a stable home.
But behind closed doors, she’s dealing with her husband Gonzalo’s (Daniel Grao) abusive and controlling behavior. Every interaction is a delicate balancing act, and you can feel the pressure weighing on her.
Then comes Edu (Jaime Zatarain), a figure from her high school days, whose sudden reappearance shakes everything up. His presence forces Ángela to confront what she’s been enduring and consider whether breaking free is worth the risks.
From there, the series gradually ratchets up the tension, throwing in unexpected twists designed to keep you clicking to the next episode (a clear sign that the thriller has all the right ingredients for a gripping watch).
Simply put, “Angela” is a tense thriller that follows a woman caught between the danger of leaving her abusive husband and the risk of staying, and the first episode doesn’t waste time setting the stakes, ending with a shocking twist that turns the entire premise on its head.
I’m always up for a solid remake, and while it’s usually more common to see English versions of international titles, Spanish-language series have carved out a devoted audience of their own. And it seems like “Angela” is tapping into that appetite perfectly with its arrival in Netflix’s top 10.
The show doesn’t have a Rotten Tomatoes score yet, but Karina Adelgaard’s review on Heaven of Horror is important to note: “As a thriller series that included a storyline featuring abuse, it does get very uncomfortable and scary at times.”
As a limited series, “Angela” keeps its story tight and focused, packing all the suspense and drama into just six episodes. That makes it the perfect length for a binge-watch if you’re looking for something to stream on Netflix this week.
