Apple may be using titanium and a 'liquid metal' hinge in the iPhone Fold — here's how this could make it the best foldable phone yet

The iPhone Fold is expected to be a cutting-edge device, right down to the materials Apple is allegedly choosing to build the phone with.

Citing a "related material company source," Korean tipster Yeux1122 says Apple's folding iPhone will feature a liquid metal hinge and a titanium frame. This fits with previous rumors about the iPhone Fold's hinge and materials choices, made in the name of improving the phone's strength and lightness.

Apple has apparently been working with liquid metal for years, but has only used it once — to make SIM tools to pack in with the iPhone 3G and original iPad in select regions. Moving from a single, static piece of metal to a full-on hinge seems like a big leap, but hopefully Apple's engineers haven't been idle for the past 15-ish years.

The other part of the Yeuz1122 rumor — Apple's use of titanium for the iPhone Fold, is very much what we expected. Currently, the only titanium-clad iPhone on sale is the iPhone Air, but previous iPhone Pro models were made of the metal too.

However, the leak claims that the titanium the iPhone Fold will use has been improved in some way. It's not stated how, so it's left to us to guess what might improve. Options like a higher grade of titanium, a higher percentage of titanium to aluminum in the overall body immediately spring to mind, but we'll have to wait for further rumors to help explain things.

Apple itself probably isn't going to say anything about the iPhone Fold until it's actually announcing the phone. That's expected to come this September, and given we've been waiting for Apple to launch a folding phone for almost a decade, we are excited for the opportunity to finally hear the official details straight from Cupertino.
