Tom's Guide Verdict
The Onebed Original (Gen3) is a standout all-foam mattress in Australia’s bed-in-a-box space. It's biggest selling point is its flippable firmness layer that effectively combines memory foam and latex-like responsiveness for customisable comfort. What surprised me the most was just how comfortable I found it and, at its price point, it doesn't compromise support at all. With great pressure relief, reinforced edge support and minimal motion transfer, I think the Onebed Original (Gen 3) is exceptional value, especially with the 125-night trial and long 15-year warranty.

Why you can trust Tom's Guide
Onebed is an Australian-based mattress manufacturer that's been operating nationwide since 2015. Competing against the best mattresses in Australia from more popular brands like Koala and Ecosa, Onebed entered into a competitive market but holds its own, offering more budget-friendly mattresses for all types of sleepers.
Stocking a range of mattresses-in-a-box, bedding, toppers and frames, Onebed could well be your next affordable one-stop shop when upgrading your bedroom. The company currently has five mattresses to choose from, ranging in price and quality. They all come with an exceptional 125-night trial, and all but one come with a 15-year warranty.
The subject of this review — the Onebed Original (or the Original 11") — has been the brand's staple for quite some time and has received a much-needed makeover in the new Gen3 model. It combines proprietary memory foam and the responsiveness of latex into a flippable firmness layer, making it a customisable, budget-friendly mattress.
As someone who appreciates the comfort of a cloud-like feel when in bed, I couldn't pass up what seemed like a great fit for me. But how does the Onebed Original stack up against the competition? I spent six weeks sleeping on it to find out.
Onebed Original Mattress: review in brief
- Essentially a 2-layer foam mattress with three foam types
- Great 15-year warranty and 125-night trial
- Reasonably priced across all sizes
Choosing the right mattress can be extremely difficult. Everyone has their own sleeping preference, meaning something that suits one person may not be to another’s liking. And this holds true for the Onebed Original.
Type: Foam
Materials: Tencel cover, proprietary foam and memory foam layers
Firmness: Tom's Guide rating of 7/10
Height: 28cm
Trial period: 125 nights
Warranty: 15 years
Price: AU$1,000 - AU$1,600
The Aussie bed-in-a-box market is quite crowded, but the Onebed Original mattress is a strong contender and offers customisable comfort, solid support and excellent value. As someone who’s tested a few mattresses since 2024, I was genuinely impressed.
There are just two main foam layers, which seems like it's not much, but Onebed has made this work to its (and the sleeper's) advantage. Right under the Tencel cover is a flippable firmness layer that consists of two types of foam. By default is the medium firmness on top when you first unpack it, and this is made from what the company calls Auralux — a proprietary memory foam to allow the mattress to contour around the body. Flip it and you get medium-firm cooling gel-infused memory foam.

I really enjoyed the comfort of the memory foam, and didn't experience excessive sinkage even on the medium side; it provided the perfect amount to keep my hips, shoulders and spine aligned while side sleeping. I also enjoyed sleeping on my stomach on the Onebed in the medium configuration, but the medium-firm layer was a bit stiffer than I like when flopped face down. My back-sleeping co-reviewer also slept soundly and woke up with no aches or pains in his lower back after staying in the same position nearly all night long, and that's all thanks to the memory foam.
The five-zone support base is dense and stable, providing excellent edge support — I could sit or sleep near the sides without feeling like I’d roll or slide off. Motion isolation was also outstanding, and even though I’m a restless sleeper (plus a dog between us), my partner didn’t notice a thing.
The removable Tencel cover stayed cool to the touch, and cooling gel-infused memory foam dissipated heat well. Overall, the temperature regulation was exceptional.
There was very little off-gassing after setup, and the mattress was fully puffed up within the first 24 hours. Onebed suggests that it might take five full days for it to expand, but I didn't find this to be the case during my review. My only real gripe during the setup process was the lack of side handles, which made rotating the mattress more awkward than it should be.
Still, considering it’s priced at AU$1,400 for a queen (down to AU$840 at the time of writing), minor flaws are forgivable, and it’s hard to fault otherwise. I would, in fact, go so far as to say that I much prefer the Onebed Original to the Origin Hybrid Mattress that I reviewed prior to this.
You also get a generous 125-night trial and a 15-year warranty with the Original, both above the industry standard. Plus, all materials are CertiPUR-US or OEKO-TEX certified, so they’re free from harmful substances.
Delivery is free and relatively fast (up to 7 business days for metro, up to 10 days for regional/rural), and if you don’t love it during the trial period, Onebed will arrange a full refund and a free pickup, then donate the mattress to charity.
While I spent six weeks testing this mattress and concede that it's not long enough to judge its durability, I am hopeful. During my time with it I saw no signs of sagging or wear, and the build quality suggests it’ll hold up for years to come. I also don't think Onebed would offer such a long warranty if it didn't have confidence in its product.
If you’re after an affordable, comfortable and supportive foam mattress, I think you should definitely give the Onebed Original and audition.
Onebed Original review: price, delivery and deals
- Exceptional 15-year warranty
- 125-night trial period
- Free and fast delivery nationwide
As I've already mentioned, Onebed currently stocks five mattresses in Australia, and they are available in six sizes — the Original is the middle child. Note, however, that two of the company's older beds are also still listed on the site, but in the clearance section. At the time of writing, the queen-sized Original mattress was discounted to just AU$840, which is a highly competitive compared to its AU$1,400 list price.
A step down from the Original is the Essential (or Essential 10"), which houses three foam layers, and retails at AU$1,100 for a queen. The Essential is rated as medium firm and features the same Auralux and cooling gel memory foam layers as found in the Original. However, these layers aren't flippable, and the Essential doesn't have a dedicated edge support layer.
The next offering above the Original is the Hybrid, also stylised as X Hybrid 12", which retails at AU$1,600 for a queen. The Hybrid offers five layers of support, adding pocket springs to the mix alongside the brand's signature foam layers.
The top-of-the-range Onebed mattresses are the Modular and the Max, with the latter being the newest addition. The Modular, which is currently on clearance, comes with two adjustable comfort modules for personalised comfort. The Max, on the other hand, is the brand's most premium option, with six layers of support, and it retails at AU$2,000 for a queen.
I've compiled the current list prices for all Onebed mattresses for comparison below. It's worth noting that Onebed runs sales throughout the year, so I'd recommend keeping an eye out for discounted rates before purchasing a new bed.
Header Cell - Column 0 | Single | Long Single | King single | Double | Queen | King |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Original 11" | AU$1,000 | AU$1,100 | AU$1,100 | AU$1,200 | AU$1,400 | AU$1,600 |
Essential 10" | Row 1 - Cell 1 | AU$900 | Row 1 - Cell 3 | AU$1,000 | AU$1,100 | AU$1,200 |
X Hybrid 12" | AU$1,300 | Row 2 - Cell 2 | Row 2 - Cell 3 | AU$1,500 | AU$1,600 | AU$1,750 |
Modular | AU$1,850 | Row 3 - Cell 2 | Row 3 - Cell 3 | Row 3 - Cell 4 | Row 3 - Cell 5 | Row 3 - Cell 6 |
Max | Row 4 - Cell 1 | Row 4 - Cell 2 | Row 4 - Cell 3 | AU$1,750 | AU$1,750 | AU$2,250 |
Despite having considerably varied pricing, the Onebed range caters to all types of budgets and sleepers. While the Original may be a mid-range option, that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily what's best for you. However, having reviewed other competing mattresses, like the Origin Hybrid and the Valmori Hybrid II, I think the Onebed Original is sold at a very reasonable price considering what it offers.
View the Onebed Original at Onebed
Much like other bed-in-a-box brands, Onebed has frequent sales throughout the year, discounting its inventory across mattresses, bed frames and bedding. At the time of writing, Onebed is holding a 40% off sale on all mattresses, including the Original 11".
All Onebed mattresses come with a generous 125-night trial, which is a step above many other bed-in-a-box brands' 100-night trial. Onebed doesn't have a showroom or warehouse for customers to try before they buy; however, they do offer a 125-day money-back guarantee if you don't find the mattress to your liking. Like most other brands, you'll need to have slept on the bed for 30 nights to be eligible for the full refund and return if it’s not to your liking. You can organise a free collection within metro areas, but you may incur a fee if you live rurally. If you return your mattress, the brand will donate it to a charity, provided it is in a reasonable condition as per Onebed's T&Cs.
In terms of warranty claims, Onebed offers a 15-year warranty on the Original, Hybrid, Modular and Max mattresses, whereas the Essential only receives a standard 10-year warranty. Again, much like Ecosa and Valmori, Onebed excels with a lengthy warranty guarantee; however, Yinahla has them beat, offering a massive 20-year claim for its mattresses, with prices starting at a hefty AU$3,089 for a single.
Onebed offers free and fast delivery for metro areas within 1-7 business days. For non-metro and rural areas, the brand also guarantees delivery within 10 business days. The delivery process was extremely fast for my address in metro Sydney, with the whole process taking three days from order to delivery.
Onebed Original review: design and materials
- Redesigned two-layer foam mattress with flippable cooling gel and adaptive proprietary foam on top
- Five-zone support base
- 28cm thickness
All of Onebed's mattresses come with five-zone support, and three out of five models have a flippable firmness layer (or modules in the Modular's case). The Original, or the Original 11” Gen3, has been completely redesigned as an upgrade from the Original 11” Gen2, which had been the brand's mid-range option for quite some time.
The reinvigorated Original Gen3 introduced several changes, and Onebed says it has improved every layer of the mattress. The top fabric is a premium blend Tencel cover, made from sustainably sourced wood pulp. It's soft, cool to the touch and removable via an all-around zipper, making it easy to chuck in the wash if needed.
The first layer is Onebed's Auralux proprietary foam layer that combines memory foam and latex-like comfort into one breathable, cooling support zone and acts as the medium firmness layer.
The second layer — which technically is part of the flippable top as it's attached to the Auralux — is made out of memory foam infused with cooling gel beads to help draw heat away from the body. While it helps keep you cool on muggy nights, the memory foam layer is also used as the adjustable medium-firm layer. Both foam layers are protected by a mesh sleeve and stored safely behind a mesh zipped panel, preventing the flippable layer from moving around when you are sleeping.
The final layer is the five-zone charcoal-infused support foam, which is a dense base that absorbs weight differently across the body. The mattress uses charcoal-infused foam to naturally absorb moisture and odours, helping maintain freshness. This layer is features a reinforced barrier with raised sides for extra edge support. These sides, which are also charcoal-infused, provide enough strength and stability that the mattress is supportive right up to the edge, and I found this to be true throughout the review period. It was exceptionally stable, and I didn't feel like I was sinking significantly while sitting on the corners of the bed.
Onebed Original review: Firmness and comfort
- Adjustable firmness layer
- Tom's Guide medium firmness rating of 7 out of 10, medium-firm rating of 8 out of 10
- It could be slightly too firm for stomach sleepers
In terms of firmness, there are a few things to consider when it comes to the Onebed Original Gen 3. First, the flippable firmness layer with the pale-red Auralux side offering a medium firmness and the pale-blue memory foam side is slightly harder with a medium-firm rating.
With medium Auralux as the default option when delivered, I rated the mattress a 7 out of 10, with 10 being extra firm on our Tom's Guide scale. As for the medium-firm side, I rated it 8 out of 10.
The removable Tencel cover is soft and incredibly plush, but the main drivers of my ratings are the foam layers. Both sides offer an appropriate amount of memory foam sinkage, supporting the hips and keeping the spine aligned, no matter which firmness you prefer.
The medium layer has more contouring than hybrid mattresses around the lower back, which is a problem that my colleagues have found in similarly priced mattresses in their reviews.
The two reviewers who tested this Onebed Original mattress prefer different sleeping positions but typically like a medium-soft firmness rating. I preferred sleeping on the medium layer more than my partner, who favoured the medium-firm side. We both agreed that the medium-firm layer was still delightful to snooze on, though. For both sides, we found the top foam layers moulded around our bodies well enough to eliminate our pressure points, especially around the bony areas of the shoulders and hips.
I found the medium side to be ever-so-slightly firmer than the Valmori Hybrid II which, as a stomach/side sleeper, was really very comfortable and supportive, but flipping onto my stomach wasn't the most pleasant on the medium-firm side. My vote goes to the softer medium layer.
My back-sleeping partner also found it comfortable and snug, particularly underneath his hips and lower back. He also found there was enough sinkage from the memory foam on the medium-firm layer to support his spine, without feeling excessively firm. He gave both sides his full approval.

Onebed Original review: performance
- Zero motion transfer
- Edge support is commendable
- Very comfortable and can be tailored to your preferences
Assessing a mattress's comfort is often very subjective. That said, performance metrics are much more quantifiable. I've tested all the important factors in this section to provide a better understanding of the Onebed Original mattress and its potential to improve your sleep experience.
Do note, though, that when trialling a new mattress, many bed brands recommend sleeping on it for at least a month before making any decisions. This is because it takes time for your body to adjust to a new mattress, even one of similar firmness to your previous one, and what may feel uncomfortable at first might be more so after a few weeks have passed.
All the metrics included below have been scored after sleeping on the mattress for a period of six weeks.
Setup
Score: 5 / 5
As reviewed here, the queen-sized Onebed Original mattress comes in a fairly tall box and weighs around 30.7kg. Once taken out of the box, the mattress itself weighs 29.2kg, which is considerably lighter than the average hybrid queen mattress, which typically weighs between 40 and 50kg.
Delivery was seamless, with the mattress brought into the room, and the unboxing process was easily managed single-handed.
The setup is rather straightforward. As with all other mattresses in a box, the Onebed Original comes vacuum-sealed and shrink-wrapped, and there's a cutter included, which I thought was a nice touch. I used it to slice open the plastic cover after placing the rolled package on my bed frame, then let it unfurl on its own.
The mattress didn't take too long to inflate to its full size, and it was perfectly suitable to sleep on later that evening. The brand advises that you can use it on the day you open it, but it may take up to five days for it to settle completely and expand to its full size. In my case, it maintained its shape after the first night and didn't inflate any more over time.
The Onebed Original doesn't come with any handles on the sides, which can be inconvenient when trying to rotate or move the mattress. I wasn't particularly thrilled by this, as most beds come with two handles — one on each side. Many mattresses even come with on the sides and the ends.
The Original measures 28cm deep, so it's ideal for most standard fitted sheets. If you choose to use a mattress topper for extra plushness, you may want to consider deeper sheets, just to make sure everything stays put.
Off-gassing
Score: 5 / 5
Mattresses in a box often suffer from off-gassing, a process that begins as soon as you rip the plastic — as fresh air begins to flow into the mattress, the gases produced during the foam-manufacturing process escape, resulting in a distinct odour.
It can take from a few hours to a few days to fully air out, and it's recommended that you allow at least 4-5 hours for off-gassing to finish (and do it in a well-ventilated room) before you put sheets on and start using the mattress.
In my testing, the Onebed's off-gassing smell lingered for the first hour, but there was little to no smell when sleeping on it that night, even when breathing up close with no sheet. After a day, the mattress had no smell at all. It wasn’t an off-putting smell either, and it was far less potent than what I experienced during my Origin Hybrid mattress review.
Pressure relief
Score: 5 / 5
Two users of different height, weight and preferred sleeping positions slept on the mattress during its six-week testing period, and neither of us had any aches and pains after we started using it. In fact, it was so comfortable that we didn't want to get out of bed most mornings.
The Onebed Original is engineered with a five-zone support base made of high-density foam. This foam base absorbs weight differently for different areas of the body. For our back sleeper, the mattress cradled their lower back and shoulders, keeping their spine straight and easing pressure points with some comfortable sinkage. They didn't feel like they were sinking too much into either the medium or medium-firm layer, but they did notice they created a deeper depression in the medium layer, especially around their hips, when lying on their back.
I was thrilled sleeping on the Onebed as a side/stomach sleeper. I really enjoyed sleeping on my sides for long periods of time (and slept very soundly), as the mattress was very supportive around my shoulders and my hips. Much like my partner, I found nice contouring around my hips regardless of which firmness side I was lying on. I didn't feel like I was sinking too far into the mattress, and I kept a straight spine while side sleeping. When I flipped onto my stomach, I had no aches or pains in my lower back. I preferred stomach sleeping on the medium side, as I found the medium-firm layer a bit too stiff for my liking, as there wasn't a lot of give under my chest.
Ultimately, we found the mattress to be slightly firmer than we prefer, but that didn't compromise its overall comfort and support — it can be easily recommended for most types of sleepers.
Temperature regulation
Score: 5 / 5
Even with an air conditioner, a hot summer's night can be worsened by a warm mattress. In fact, even in cooler circumstances, lack of airflow and moisture wicking can build up humidity and impact your sleep.
Body heat can often impact how well you sleep at night, but in the Onebed Original's case, the mattress did an excellent job of circulating airflow and keeping things cool. As mentioned above, the mattress has the Auralux and cooling gel-infused memory foams, designed to keep you cool all night long.
While my testing was through the tail end of winter and into spring, Sydney did have the occasional muggy and warm night during this period. Even so, the test bedroom has floor-to-ceiling windows that provide direct sun exposure in the mornings, warming the room more than normal.
Throughout the review period, the Onebed Original was very efficient in keeping my partner and me delightfully cool during the night despite the room building up heat during the day.
Edge support
Score: 5 / 5
Thanks to a special support foam layer, the Onebed Original delivers excellent edge support. Using a digital force gauge, I conducted a comparative test between the middle of the mattress, 10cm from the side and the corners.
In the middle of the mattress, 50N (5.1kg of force) sank 2cm into the mattress. Approximately 10cm from the side, the same force sank 2cm, and on the corners, the bed sank 2cm. This indicated an even layer of support across the entire surface of the mattress.
In everyday use, I had no issues sleeping right up to the edges; the bed was just as supportive on the sides as it was in the middle. Even when sitting on the edge or corners, the bed didn't significantly decompress at all, and I only noticed a small amount of sagging.
Subjectively, I could easily sit on the side of the bed to put my shoes on, and I didn't feel unsupported in any way. If you have mobility issues, you may have an easier time getting in or out of bed, thanks to its reinforced edge.
Motion transfer
Score: 5 / 5
I was utterly impressed with the motion transfer — or should I say, lack thereof — that I experienced throughout my review of the Onebed Original.
Foam mattresses are known for keeping motion transfer to a minimum anyway, but the memory foam here does a remarkable job — something I wasn't quite expecting at this price point.
Although I’m a restless, frequent turner, my partner found my movements virtually unnoticeable. We also had out 20kg beloved pooch sharing our bed most nights, sleeping between my partner and me, and even his movements were barely noticeable.
Durability
Score: 5 / 5
Admittedly my testing period was a short one (just six weeks), but it still gives you a good measure of the bed you're sleeping on. During my review, the Onebed Original showed no signs of wear and tear or sagging, and Onebed backs its craftsmanship by giving the Original mattress a generous 15-year warranty. (Though it's worth noting that the Onebed Essential mattress has a 10-year warranty).
This guarantee only extends to defects associated with ordinary use of the mattress on a structurally sound base, like visible indentations greater than 20mm or splits in the foam or latex layers. I didn't find any areas of concern during my testing and I’m confident that the Onebed Original will stand the test of time.
The mattress cover is intricately stitched with a reinforced zipper, so it's easy to remove and doesn't budge while sleeping. My only gripe was the lack of handles on the sides or ends of the mattress, which made it difficult to move on my own.
During my testing, I rotated, flipped and stood the mattress up to test how the layers flexed and moved. It held up rather well throughout the process, but Onebed says that rotating the mattress isn't required, as it's intended to be a one-way mattress throughout the 10- to 15-year lifespan.

Onebed Original review: user reviews
As we often mention in our mattress reviews, the best choice for you depends entirely on your personal sleep experience. Something we recommend might not suit you, so to broaden the scope of the review, we usually include what other users have to say. We often refer to customer experiences from Product Review, Australia’s biggest consumer rating site and a reliable source for unbiased opinions.
As per Product Review, the Onebed Original mattress, for both 10" and 11" models, have mostly positive comments, with a 4.7 out of 5 rating over 3,400 reviews. Customers were impressed with the buying experience, speedy delivery and the significant comfort of the mattress.
There is some debate over the firmness level, with the majority of reviews (1.3K) suggesting it’s medium firmness, while a significant minority (605) refer to it as having a hard firmness. However, given the flippable layer, it's worth taking these reviews with a grain of salt.
Should I buy the Onebed Original?
The Onebed Original has become my favourite mattress I've reviewed to date, and it exceeded all my expectations. It has an attractively low price, yet gives great comfort and support for all types of sleepers and offers a valuable customisation option.
Sure, it doesn't offer quite the extensive customisation of the Sleeping Duck Mach II, but for a mid-range price point, the flippable layer was a pleasant addition to an already excellent mattress. Both the Auralux and cooling gel memory foams provide good support no matter which side you have on top and give excellent temperature regulation.
My favourite feature was the lack of motion transfer, as there is essentially none with the Onebed Original. There's also ample support when lying close to the edge or when sitting on the side of the mattress.
Onebed's 15-year warranty on the Original mattress is also a highlight, and the impressive 125-night trial is a great benefit for those who want to try the bed before fully committing. That said, the Onebed Original is a mattress I'd wholeheartedly commit to.
Onebed Original review: Alternatives
When it comes to alternatives, there are a few to consider. It all comes down to firmness, though, as the Onebed Original could be too firm (or soft) for some. The closest rival is the Koala SE Mattress, with very similar features but more customisation options. Another alternative, Ergoflex 5G, is also included below.
1. Koala SE Mattress
Type: Foam
Materials: Foam, polyester
Firmness: 7 / 10 (Medium-firm)
Height: 23cm
Trial period: 120 nights
Warranty: 10 years
Price: AU$650 - AU$1,190
In our Koala SE Mattress review, we gave it 4 stars thanks to its affordability and comfort. Our reviewer said the Koala SE did an "admirable job of providing the required supportive comfort to avoid waking up stiff and sore". The SE is very budget-conscious without sacrificing comfort, and the 120-night trial period makes it easy to try out risk-free.
The Koala SE performed well in most areas, too, but much like the Onebed Original but of course, it has a few minor issues. It has no side or end handles, the removable cover can't be machine-washed, and it doesn't give the same level of pressure relief and spine alignment as a more expensive, premium mattress.
That said, it's still a supportive mattress that is quite affordable compared to hybrid and other foam models.
Choose Koala if: You want a firmer all-foam mattress
Avoid it if: You want a removable cover and adjustable firmness
2. Ergoflex 5G
Type: Foam
Materials: Memory foam, polyester, Tencel
Height: 23cm
Trial period: 30 nights
Warranty: 10 years
Price: AU$899.99 - AU$1,899.99
If you prefer a more pillowy soft foam mattress, you may want to consider the Ergoflex 5G mattress. Rated as our best foam mattress in our guide, our reviewer called it the "most comfortable mattress" he's ever slept on, despite not liking deep-sinking beds — and that's what this is.
The Ergoflex 5G has minimal motion transfer, solid edge support, and good temperature regulation — which isn't the standard for foam beds. The cover is removable and machine washable, and has two handles for easy moving or rotating. The only disappointing factor is its below-average 30-night trial in Australia, which is the same amount of time we recommend sleeping on a new mattress before making any conclusions on it.
Choose Ergoflex if: You want a medium-soft foam mattress
Avoid it if: You don't like the deep sink of super-dense memory foam
