The weekend is here, and that means it’s time to kick back and relax with some great movies on the best streaming services. And if you’re looking for a well-stocked film library, Prime Video is a great place to start. The Amazon platform offers so many movies that it can be overwhelming. It’s easy to waste precious movie-watching time just endlessly scrolling.

That’s why I’m here to round up three must-watch picks this weekend, cutting through the streaming clutter to bring you some recently-added Prime Video films worthy of a spot on your watchlist. Whether you want a charming (but admittedly flawed) comedy or a historical epic anchored by one of the finest actresses in Hollywood, you’ll find it on Prime Video.

So, without further introduction, these are the three new to Prime Video movies I’m streaming this weekend, and I think you might want to consider watching them as well.

‘The Woman King’ (2022)

Viola Davis leads this historical action-drama, and that should be enough of a reason to watch it this weekend. The Oscar-winning Davis is widely heralded as one of the acting greats for very good reason, and this crowd-pleasing is another fantastic vehicle that allows her immense talents to shine. Beyond Davis’ sterling leading performance, “The Woman King” is also an empowering movie that feels both refreshing and extremely vital.

From director Gina Prince-Bythewood, “The Woman King” is inspired by historical events and chronicles the story of the Agojie, an all-female unit of warriors dedicated to protecting their home of Dahomey, West Africa, in the 19th century. Their leader is General Nanisca (Davis), who is tasked with training the next generation of recruits ahead of a fierce battle against the Oyo Empire, who seek to enslave the Agojie people and destroy their way of life.

‘Next Goal Wins’ (2023)

Watch On

If you’re looking for a feel-good comfort watch this weekend, “Next Goal Wins” is a sports comedy with a big heart. Directed by Taika Waititi, it features the filmmaker's very specific brand of eccentric humor, and unlike Waititi's divisive “Thor: Love & Thunder,” it’s at least tonally consistent. It’s based on the 2014 documentary of the same name (also worth watching) and tells a true underdog story through the lens of the American Samoa national soccer team.

In the early 2000s, the American Samoa soccer team was widely mocked and branded the “worst team ever” after suffering a 0-31 defeat to Australia. With the 2014 World Cup qualifiers on the horizon, the team wants to change the narrative. Qualification is a long shot, but they’d settle for just winning a game. To help achieve their goals, the nation’s soccer federation hires American coach Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender), a jaded man who’s also seeking a win. It turns out, the American Samoa soccer team and Rongen both need each other.

‘Sisu’ (2023)

Watch On

Fans of revenge-driven action movies like “John Wick” won’t want to miss “Sisu.” It may have arrived on Prime Video at the start of the month, but even a few weeks later, it’s no less worthy of your watchlist. The revenge story at the movie’s heart is relatively straightforward, but the narrative framework is merely a tool to showcase gleefully violent action. If you’re looking for non-stop carnage, “Sisu” is sure to get your adrenaline flowing this weekend.

Set in the dying embers of World War II, Aatami Korpi (Jorma Tommila) is a gold prospector living a humble life in the wilderness of northern Finland. After discovering a sizeable deposit of the precious resource, he crosses paths with a group of German soldiers, who mistake him for an easy target, and cruelly steal his gold. But they have no idea who they just robbed, and Aatmai is more than a simple miner. He’s a one-man army, out for revenge.
