Stop the presses: Peacock has issued a last-minute adjustment to its release strategy for the upcoming "The Office" spinoff, "The Paper." Previously, the new show was due for a four-episode premiere on Thursday, September 4, with two new episodes dropping each week thereafter, through September 25.
Yesterday (August 21), we learned that the plan had changed, and Peacock is instead switching gears and opting for the binge model. If you were looking forward to the new sitcom, you'll be pleased to know all 10 episodes of "The Paper" will be available on the streaming service on September 4.
Sharing the news about the shift, The Hollywood Reporter claims this change has been made owing to early positive reactions to "The Paper."
"Citing positive responses from people who have previewed the series (though not in print; reviews are embargoed until closer to the premiere), Peacock, Universal Television and the show’s producers decided to make the change and drop the entire season at once," THR said.
This move also means all ten episodes of "The Paper" will be available to prospective viewers before the crowded fall TV season kicks off.
When I watched "The Paper" trailer a couple of weeks back, it had me a little concerned. I know it's tough to judge an entire 10-episode series off a trailer, but a trailer's designed to sell you on a show or movie... and "The Paper" trailer didn't quite fulfill that brief, for me.
Judging by some of the reactions in the YouTube comments, I wasn't the only one who felt that way: maybe Peacock wants us to race through the new sitcom so we can see all the best bits?
What we know about 'The Paper' on Peacock right now
"The Paper," if you didn't know, is a follow-up from Greg Daniels (who adapted the original UK "The Office" for NBC) and Michael Koman ("Nathan For You"), and sees the original documentary team who immortalized the antics from Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch finding a brand new subject: a historic Midwestern newspaper, the Toledo Truth Teller, and the publisher working to revive it.
"The Paper" stars Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, and Tim Key. "The Office" alum Oscar Nuñez is also reprising the role of Oscar Martinez (though the trailer showed his reunion with the camera crew isn't exactly a happy one).
We also know that Eric Rahill, Duane Shepard Sr., Allan Havey, Nate Jackson, Mo Welch, Nancy Lenehan, Molly Ephraim, and Tracy Letts are due to guest star in "The Paper."
Going into "The Paper," we don't yet know whether we'll see any other members of "The Office" cast putting in an appearance. However, Paul Lierberstein — who played HR rep Toby Flenderson and worked as a writer on the original show — did direct the fourth episode.
