Outside of the obvious eyes on Best Picture - with the main competition between One Battle After Another and Sinners - the most exciting category may in fact be Best International Feature.

In what feels like a three horse race there really is anything to play for and an incredibly diverse and well executed roster of films this year. Perhaps the best line up this century.

So, who’s going to take home the Oscar?

A incredibly timely film dissecting and satirising the Iranian regime: It Was Just an Accident? Brazil’s entry, The Secret Agent, which shows one man’s fight against a military dictatorship. Sentimental Value, the front runner with Hollywood royalty Stellan Skarsgård and Elle Fanning?

Or could it be a surprise with Sirāt, an emotional tale of a father searching for his missing daughter? Or a political underdog of a film: The Voice of Hind Rajab about the IDF’s killing of a six-year-old Palestinian girl?

We’re glad you asked! We’ve put together a guide on how to watch them wherever you are in the world…

It Was Just an Accident (France)

It Was Just an Accident focuses on a group of former political prisoners as they track down who they believe is their torturer and turn the tables on them. It's suspenseful, political and surprisingly funny.

It was certainly the buzziest film at the start of the awards circuit with a Palme D'Or win for writer and director Jafar Panahi. However, nearly a year on and the conversation has died down perhaps a case of a film peaking too early.

However, this may now be the timeliest film with the ongoing war against the Iranian regime. Also considering the history of this film - with Panahi having been a former political prisoner himself, having to make the film in secret and releasing it through a French production company - there's a powerful narrative that the Oscars love.

The Secret Agent (Brazil)

Taking place during the Brazilian military dictatorship, The Secret Agent follows a professor entangled in the action while resisting the authoritarian regime. Again, this may strike a chord as timely in some parts of the world.

This could be a historic achievement for Brazil if they take home Oscar gold this month. Having won the previous International Feature Film last year with I'm Still Here - the country's first ever win in this category and also focusing on this period in history - they could win two consecutive years in a row with The Secret Agent!

As well as scoring an International Feature, this Brazilian film also picked up a Best Picture nod which is usually a sign that it'll win the category...but this year another film also in this category also secured a Best Picture nominee. Working in its favour though is the film's star Wagner Moura who did the nearly undoable: secure a foreign language acting nomination. Only time will tell if that translates to anything...

Sentimental Value (Norway)

Can being the frontrunner for Best International Feature help or hinder Sentimental Value? (Image credit: BFA / SF Studios / Alamy)

It’s no secret that the Oscars loves films about filmmaking and Sentimental Value is the latest example of this. Centring on a dysfunctional family and the father - an acclaimed director - who wants to make a meta film about his family’s life it manages to navigate through genres, emotions and languages with expert precision.

Very much a respected writer and director within the industry and film circles, Joachim Trier has been on the verge of mainstream for a while and Sentimental Value may be the vehicle to get him Oscar gold. Following up his incredible Oscar-nominated inidie film The Worst Person in the World, this hits all the right beats to secure it perhaps two Oscar wins.

Not only is it favourite for International Feature - although only slightly with political significance favouring It Was Just an Accident and some last minute momentum with The Secret Agent - but it racked up acting nominations too. With four spread across Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, it looks like Stellan Skarsgård may get his flowers with a Supporting Actor win. It has a whiff of lifetime achievement after an incredible career but it would still be richly deserved with a memorable and moving performance.

Sirāt (Spain)

Sirāt tells the story of a father attempting to find his missing daughter who vanished months previously at a rave. A simple story executed well which also sees a fish out of water narrative with said father heading to another rave in the hope of finding her.

This Spanish entry in the Oscar international race is definitely bringing up the rear - along with the next nomination - in what feels like a three horse race - but it still packs a punch. Maybe the most emotionally charged of the nominees given its subject matter, Sirāt has received rave reviews from critics around the world.

Having gone under the radar due to the star power of the previous films, this Spanish film could be one to watch with the Oscars peculiar preferential voting system if the top three films cancel each other out and this one is high on voters’ list as an alternative.

The Voice of Hind Rajab (Tunisia)

And finally, last but not least, The Voice of Hind Rajab. Perhaps having secured the least amount of attention in this category is this entry from Tunisia about a real story of a six-year-old Palestinian girl murdered by the IDF during Israel’s invasion of the Gaza Strip.

Sadly the lack of talk may be due to the subject matter which is certainly more taboo in America than most other countries, but it has also suffered from a lack of publicity. Another issue is maybe the format of the film which is a docudrama, historically a harder film to explain to voters and public alike.

Whatever the reason, this is perhaps the most important film on the list and easily the most political. Whether that moves the needle positively or negatively we will find out soon but even Hollywood is staying fairly quiet on Israel/Palestine so it may ultimately not gain the attention it sadly deserves.
