If you'd prefer not to have to sort through the entire list, I've already looked through the full list of everything that's new on HBO Max in May 2026 and picked out some highlights that I think are definitely worth watching.
May's batch of new HBO Max arrivals might be a little smaller than last month's, but it still contains a solid collection of top-quality watches. Whether you're after romance, action or drama, there's bound to be something new to add to your watchlist.
Article continues belowHere are the five new-to-HBO Max movies I'd recommend streaming in May, plus a rundown of every movie that's just come to the streaming service at the start of the month.
Top movies to stream on HBO Max in May 2026
'Love, Simon'
Let's kick things off with Greg Berlanti's queer coming-of-age movie, "Love, Simon," a sweet, funny teen romantic comedy/drama that impressed upon its release in 2018.
The film introduces us to 17-year-old Simon Spier (Nick Robinson). Simon hasn't yet told anyone that he's gay, and he also doesn't know the identity of the anonymous student, "Blue," whom he starts emailing (and falls for). Cue a classic, heartfelt story about finding yourself and falling in love.

'The Florida Project' (2017)
Before "Anora," Sean Baker brought us another critically-acclaimed 2017 slice-of-life drama: "The Florida Project." It's empathetic, emotional, and was lauded as one of the best movies of the year, and thus it's definitely worth considering while you're planning your May viewing.
The film focuses primarily on a single mother, Halley (Bria Vinaite), and her six-year-old daughter, Moonee (Brooklynn Prince), who live in a budget motel in Kissimmee, Florida, trying to make ends meet in the shadow of the "happiest place on Earth," Walt Disney World.

'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse' (2023)
As we've finally had some fresh news about the final part of Sony's awesome animated "Spider-Man" trilogy recently, it feels like the perfect time to revisit this middle chapter, which also just landed on HBO Max on May 1.
After getting to grips with his newfound powers in "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," "Across the Spider-Verse" saw Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) swinging back into theaters for another mission. After a reunion with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), Miles finds himself face-to-face with the Spider Society, a team of Spider-People who protect the Multiverse's existence. When he and the rest of the Spiders clash over how to handle a newfound threat, Miles finds himself at odds with the rest of the group and forced to save the people he loves most all on his own.

'Walk the Line' (2005)
Biopics can be hit or miss, but James Mangold's Johnny Cash biopic "Walk the Line" is definitely in the former category. It was a hit with critics upon release and scored several Oscar nods, including a Best Actress win for Reese Witherspoon as singer/songwriter June Carter.
The film draws on Cash's autobiographies and charts the ups and downs of the country music star's life, including the ups and downs of his early life, his ascent into the music scene, his drug abuse, and his long courtship with June Carter.

"Wuthering Heights" (2026)
I have to confess that I really wasn't a huge fan of Emerald Fennell's "Wuthering Heights" adaptation whatsoever, but seeing as it has just made its debut on HBO Max (and it's one of the most talked-about movies of the year so far), I figure it deserves a spot on this list anyway — I'm sure there are some viewers out there who may well check "Wuthering Heights" out now it's come to streaming.
If you're yet to check it out, "Wuthering Heights" is a fresh take on the beloved classic penned by Emily Brontë. Pitched by Warner Bros. as "a bold and original imagining of one of the greatest love stories of all time," it depicts the toxic, tumultuous love affair of Catherine Earnshaw (Margot Robbie) and Heathcliff (Jacob Elordi).
