NordVPN has added an AI Voice Detector to its Chrome browser extension, giving users a way to identify whether a voice they hear online is human or AI-generated. The feature works in real time, analyzing audio from active browser tabs, and flagging potential deepfakes as you browse.
This new addition arrives as AI voice cloning tools become more accessible and harder to detect, with synthetic audio increasingly used in scams and impersonation attempts.
How NordVPN's AI Voice Detector works
Widely regarded as one of the best Chrome VPN extensions, NordVPN's add-on now includes the AI Voice Detector, which can be enabled to monitor audio from any active browser tab. Once activated, it captures the audio stream and processes it using a local neural network trained on thousands of real and AI-generated samples.
The system analyzes acoustic characteristics such as tone, pitch, and cadence to determine whether a voice is human or synthetic. NordVPN says the feature does not record or interpret conversations, and is technically incapable of understanding what is being said.
The VPN also says it does not access user identity, browsing history, cookies, or account data at any point during the detection process. All analysis happens locally on the device, and stays private.
The tool delivers results in real time through a color-coded system: green for human speech, red for AI-generated voices, and amber for results that are less certain. A small notification also appears on the webpage while the audio continues to play normally.
The system deletes any temporary audio buffers as soon as detection stops or the tab is closed.
Why NordVPN is adding AI voice detection now
AI-generated voices are becoming increasingly realistic, with some tools able to clone a voice from just a few seconds of audio. This has contributed to a rise in impersonation scams, fake calls, and misleading content online.

How to use NordVPN's AI Voice Detector
The AI Voice Detector is currently available to NordVPN Chrome extension users. To get started:
- Open the NordVPN Chrome extension
- Enable the AI Voice Detector feature
- Play audio in any browser tab
- Check the real-time result shown in the extension or on the page
Once enabled, the tool runs automatically in the background and does not interrupt playback. As with other AI detection tools, accuracy will depend on the model and real-world use, and false positives may still occur.
