Proton VPN Black Friday deals on Duo, Family, and Unlimited are incredible – but which plan is best?
A quick guide to picking the best Proton privacy bundle
When looking for a VPN to crank up your digital privacy, one of the most important factors to consider is cost. Luckily, ’tis the Black Friday sales season, which is why many of the best VPNs are offering massive discounts, and some of their lowest prices all year.
That said, while standalone Black Friday VPN deals are already pretty awesome this year, you could save even more by going for family VPN plans. This not only lower the cost per person, but also allow you to cover your entire household on a single plan.
In comes Proton VPN, one of the most secure VPNs and a real standout when it comes to family plans. It offers two excellent family plans, Proton Duo and Proton Family, both of which are extended versions of its all-in-one package, the Proton Unlimited plan.
All of Proton's subscriptions are heavily discounted this Black Friday, and we're here to help you work out which – if any – is right for you.
Proton VPN Plus
Proton VPN Plus is Proton's individual subscription for its VPN. Designed to be used by one person, it allows 10 simultaneous connections, and can be installed on unlimited devices. It doesn't include any of Proton's extras like Proton Pass, Proton Mail, Proton Drive, or Proton Calendar.
Proton VPN Plus | 2 years
Was: $3.59 per month
Now: $2.49 per month at Proton VPN
This is the cheapest and most basic plan. It's great for individuals or couples, and one plan covers 10 devices. You only get the VPN, but it's the cheapest we've ever seen it go for.
What you get:
🚀 The fastest VPN speeds we've tested
🔐 World-renowned privacy credentials
📺 Excellent streaming performance
❌ No extras like Proton Pass, Mail or Drive
A 24-month plan starts at $2.49 per month ($59.76 all-in), and this Tom's Guide-exclusive Black Friday deal knocks a hefty $26 off your total spend. There's also a 30-day money-back guarantee.
What is Proton Unlimited?
Proton Unlimited gives you access to all of Proton's premium products, which include:
- Proton Mail: Proton's end-to-end encrypted email service that lets you create up to 15 email addresses, send and receive unlimited messages, ward off email trackers, and create unlimited folders and labels.
- Proton Calendar: Though not as popular as other Proton tools, Proton Calendar is super handy, with over 25 personal encrypted calendars that hide all of your content and securely organize all your events and invitations in one place.
- Proton VPN: One of the most private VPNs we've tested, Proton VPN offers Secure Core servers, a robust kill switch, and tons of anti-censorship tools (including its obfuscating Stealth protocol), as well as class-leading performance, server count, and unblocking.
- Proton Drive: Proton Drive gives you a whopping 500 GB of end-to-end encrypted cloud storage, where it’s incredibly straightforward to add files and upload photos, as well as access them across multiple devices thanks to cross-device syncing.
- Proton Pass: One of the best password managers going around, Proton Pass gives you 50 vaults to store an unlimited number of logins, emails, passwords, notes, credit cards, as well as Wi-Fi details, your social security number, and medical records.
Proton Unlimited | 12 months
Was: $12.99 per month
Now: $6.49 per month at Proton
When it comes to privacy suites, Proton Unlimited can't be beaten, and this deal is the cheapest I've ever seen it go for. Proton Unlimited only serves one user, so if you want to spread the love, you'll have to consider the Duo or Family plan.
What you get:
✨ VPN, Mail, Drive, Pass, & Calendar
🔑 End-to-end encryption for all apps
🔒 A privacy-focused ecosystem to rival Google
❌ Expensive if you don't want every product
A one-year Proton Unlimited plan costs $6.49 per month ($77.88 up front). You can try it risk free with Proton's 30-day money-back guarantee.
What is Proton Duo?
Proton Duo is essentially Proton Unlimited but for two people instead of one. In addition to giving you access to all Proton apps and premium features, including Proton Mail, Proton Drive, Proton VPN, Proton Calendar, and Proton Pass, it also cranks up the total amount of storage to 2 TB (from 500 GB in Proton Unlimited) and adds Proton Scribe – a privacy-first AI writing assistant integrated into Proton Mail that helps you draft, proofread, and refine emails.
While Proton Duo is more expensive – $14.99 per month ($179.88 for 12 months) – than Proton Unlimited, if you’re splitting the cost between two people, it actually comes out to $7.49 per person per month.
Proton Duo | 12 months
Was: $19.99 per month
Now: $14.99 per month at Proton
Proton Duo is great if you're a couple and prefer to keep your techy lives separate. It's generally better value – but right now, you're better off getting two separate Unlimited plans.
What you get:
👩❤️👨 Two separate accounts
📱 The same great products as Unlimited
😌 Simple to sign up
❌ Currently more expensive than Unlimited
A one-year Proton Duo plan costs $14.99 per month (179.88 up front). You can try it risk free with Proton's 30-day money-back guarantee.
What is Proton Family?
Proton Family is easily the best bargain deal out of the three. It’s currently billed at $23.99 per month ($287.88 per month for 12 months), and works out to just $3.99 per person per month if you use all of the six simultaneous connections it offers.
In addition to servicing six users (instead of Proton Duo’s two), the Family plan also increases the total storage to 3 TB across those accounts. And of course, you get access to all of the premium features in Proton Duo, including the Proton Scribe writing assistant.
Proton Family | 12 months
Was: $29.99 per month
Now: $23.99 per month at Proton
Proton Family is where it's at if you're part of a large family or a privacy-conscious group of friends. If you max out the six accounts, the price works out to be just $3.99 per month for a full Proton Unlimited account.
What you get:
🧑🧑🧒🧒 Six separate accounts
💸 Unbeatable value if you max out the plan
😌 Convenient sign up
❌ May be tricky to find six interested people
A one-year Proton Family plan costs $23.99 per month (287.88 up front). You can try it risk free with Proton's 30-day money-back guarantee.
Are Proton's family plans worth it?
While both Proton Duo and the Proton Family allow multiple users, the Family plan is unarguably the best Proton bundle deal you'll find, since it works out to around 40% less per month per user than the Proton Unlimited plan and 47% than the Proton Duo plan.
Still, the Family subscription is only worth it if multiple users are going to use all of the premium features it offers and fully move into the Proton ecosystem. However, if you're just after Proton’s fast and secure VPN, then you'll be better off considering Proton’s Black Friday VPN deal – just $2.49 per month for a 2-year term (billed $59.76 upfront).
