GoldenEye Gets Wii Remake; Old Bond Gets Cut

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

It's Daniel Craig in... GoldenEye?

One of the big reveals by Nintendo at this E3 was that GoldenEye was coming back and it will be exclusive to the Wii.

The original GoldenEye game came out for the Nintendo 64 and is considered a classic and one of the pioneer games for shooters on a console.

For those of you who missed it earlier, here is the trailer for the upcoming GoldenEye game. It's not going to be a straight remake of the original GoldenEye game, and even though it shares the same title, it won't keep all the plot elements from the original film.

Another thing to note is that Pierce Brosnan has been replaced with Daniel Craig so that it matches up to the modern day Bond.

You can't cut pierce brosnan from goldeneye. It's not goldeneye anymore.

I was excited until i found out it was Daniel craig

I too was surprised about the whole Daniel Craig thing.

It's not like you would use Pierce Brosnan if you were ever going to make a "Goldfinger" game.

I guess maybe they are doing it because they think it will sell better with the younger crowd. I guess?

Anyways I think the Wii should do this with a few of the old Nintendo 64 titles. I just wonder what kind of price these kinds of games will cost.

God it looks like its running in a nintendo 64 emulator. I hope they improve the graphics a bit or ill just drag the N64 out of the closet.

When nintendo first released the Wii, it was obvious that the hardware would be a serious limiter on the quality of the games.

In my opinion the Wii is the worst console in terms of games quality. The motion sensors where very awkward, some people say you have to get used to it but it should track my movement accurately as that was the aim of the Wii.

Maybe Wiimote+ or something improved that(years later), didn't try it and I'm not really interested in trying it.

I will definitely have to disagree somewhat. I don't particularly like the majority of the games that come out for the Wii, but it has some really good Wii-exclusive titles.

As far as controls go, I have never tried playing anything like a first person shooter. I played Mario Galaxy for a while but it was never natural to me. But Tiger Woods PGA Tour was a HECK of a lotta fun. I don't think motion controls can get any better than that, and I definitely would not enjoy the game nearly as much if I was playing it with a regular controller.

In any case I don't really play the Wii. It was a short fad for me.

I rate Goldeneye 64 to be one of the best games of all time, unfortunately the Wii version will probably not do it justice.

I always wanted them to do a remake of this game! however, the wii sucks and no Pierce? come one... This doesn't look like a heart felt remake, just a quick buck. Well hopefully if anything they can capture that old golden eye atmosphere that gave the game to much character.

Is it just me, or the graphics do look a lot like the old N64? :P

Not to steal the Wii fans' thunder... but I'd much rather see them remake Goldeneye properly for PS3 or 360.

Pierce Brosnan didn't make Goldeneye great, gameplay and great controls did. The game was well balanced, the controls were ideal, and the multiplayer was the best part of the game.

If they focus on the wrong things (like who is playing bond) this game is going to flop just as hard as every post-goldenye Bond has.

I have a Wii, and it collects dust because the games (aside from the slew of Mario games) suck pretty bad and the graphics are horrid. Not a fan of having to use the remote for everything too. Just got Netflix for the Wii and that's okay so far.. at least it's not sitting collecting dust anymore. GoldenEye with out Pierce isn't GoldenEye... :(

I'm totally fine with them using Craig. I would be extremely disappointed if the game was just a remake of the N64 version, at that point I'd just play it on N64 with the older crowd, while the younger crowd could play as Craig.

I think the Wii could really handle this well, Red Steel used the Motion+ well, and other COD type shooters have nearly nailed the controls (just not the other parts). And Wi-Fi multiplayer, if anything like the original, will be sweet. No need to have friends!

Wait... Wait... so it is a new '007 Goldeneye'? However, not 'Goldeneye' but rather '007' and they decided to call it 'Goldeneye' instead of continuing with a '007' franchise? Sounds to me like something is lost in english-japanese translation here?

Goldeneye is one story of James Bond. Once you have moved on to a new story about 007 you are moving on with 007 not Goldeneye.

hopefully they can spruce up the graphics a bit so it doesn't look like a N64 game! They couldn't use Pierce cause of licensing but who cares, its not like you see him when you are playing.

I'm assuming they did it because of issues with using Brosnan's likeness or it Activision may have forced the issue in order to allow a remake to be made. Either way, I think it's dumb too, especially if they keep the likenesses of other actors like Sean Bean. Or will they use generic, unrecognizable faces for the other characters? Or cut them out completely?

Hee :D. Too bad it's not Brosnan though. Even though he's not that great of an actor, GoldenEye was somehow a great fit for him. Oh well

Goldeneye 64 was a great game for the era, but remaking the game (quite literally) is a bad idea because gaming tech has progressed passed basic 3D shooters. Modern Shooters are quite a bit better. Our standards for what is good and what is not have gone up. Goldeneye if released today would be laughed out of the market.

The only thing that Goldeneye did that I wish they would do today was the surface levels where the world was much more open than most games today. Granted, most games would be penalized by journalist for having "bland and empty" space.

CoD4:MW is a much better game than Goldeneye, but for what Goldeneye did people will remember it as a better game.

I hate to even say this, but a game with just split screen multiplayer and a short campaign wouldn't get much traction today. Gamers expect 4 player co-op, longer campaigns, online multi-player (split screen optional), as well as DLC map packs and other such features not to mention that now games require cover systems, more realistic feel (graphics is such a dirty word... but a great game has great art style and audio visual presence. I don't just mean polygon counts, although those help), better AI, etc.

If Goldeneye:Wii is basically Goldeneye 64, then they should immediately change development and make it a (large) virtual console game and charge $15 for it. Otherwise, i think it could reflect poorly on the good name that is Goldeneye.

If you watched the movie and watched the trailer, you will see why they call it Goldeneye. It's pretty obvious if you ask me. If you don't see it, go watch the movie and then watch the trailer again.

They idiots. GoldenEye = Pierce B. Not Daniel C. Get it right.
Also the graphics (as expected) is crap. Gameplay may be good though.

One last comment (sorry about the triple post) the reason for using Daniel Craig and not Peirce Brosnan is likely tied to the owners of the "Goldeneye" name (and likely the James Bond name) probably don't have rights to use Peirce Brosnan's image without paying him again. I know that's not the answer gamers like to hear, but it's probably the reason.

Daniel Craig however is still under contract (sadly). Craig = worst bond ever.

Too true. This game might be good, but it'll never be as great as the original.

Taking my wii back to Costco...At first read of the title of this article, I thought maybe I am making a mistake as GoldenEye was AMAZING.....but NOPE this game looks to further validate my decision. It looks like an extension/copy graphically and story-wise...this does not get my wanting to buy this game in the least...for that...Boo Nintendo....you got my hopes ups and dropped them once again..shame on you.

Sick of idiots complaining about the game because they are using Daniel Craig instead of Pierce. Apparently none of you remember playing the original game, considering the model didn't look ANYTHING LIKE Pierce Brosnan anyways. LoL

With that said, it is highly doubtful that they will make a game as good as the original, considering nobody that worked on the original is making this game I don't think. They probably don't even know what made the first game so good int he first place and are only making this purely as a name drop.

I was hoping for a virtual console port of this game. The exact game. Shortly after the success of the original there were many James bond games but none of them came close to the original. I really hope they stay true to the original, it was just nearly a perfect game. Just a graphics overhaul is all it needs.

Ugh... graphics are abysmal. Though I guess its a Wii game so its to be expected. If only it would come out for PC.
