Facebook Now Offers "In a Civil Union" and "In a Domestic Partnership" as Relationship Statuses.
On Friday, Facebook announced that after high demand from users, it will be adding two new relationship statuses for users to choose from. Added to the lineup of Single, Engaged, In a Relationship, Married, It's Complicated, In an Open Relationship, Widowed, Separated, and Divorced will be "In a Civil Union" and "In a Domestic Partnership".
“This has been a highly requested feature from users,” Facebook explained. “We want to provide options for people to genuinely and authentically reflect their relationships on Facebook.”
In October 2010, Facebook formed a group known as Facebook's Network of Support, a partnership with leaders of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community in order to fight cyberbullying. The two organizations that met with Facebook to advocate the additional statuses were the Human Rights Campaign and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).
The new Facebook statuses are a part of Facebook's new campaign against cyberbullying, promoted earlier this week with Justin Bieber and MTV. By taking the initiative in preventing and speaking out against discrimination and hate, Facebook and other social media forces may play a powerful role in the fight for marriage equality. After all, we have already seen the power of social media with the recent Egyptian protests.
“Today, Facebook sent a clear message in support of gay and lesbian couples to users across the globe,”GLAAD President, Jarrett Barrios commented, “By acknowledging the relationships of countless loving and committed same-sex couples in the U.S. and abroad, Facebook has set a new standard of inclusion for social media. As public support for marriage equality continues to grow, we will continue to work for the day when all couples have the opportunity to marry and have their relationship recognized by their community, both online and off.”
With the powerful and influential Facebook sending this message, we can expect other companies to follow suit in the battle against cyberbullying and discrimination.

More evidence that all of 'those' people just like to bitch and moan and go against mainstream just for the sake of being a problem.
I don't mind if they make more status options, it's just a website, and it's a simple change that makes people happy, which doesn't effect 'hurt' anyone
What took so long? Oh, that's right, our country is run by bigoted old men (in Congress).
quitting facebook is the best thing that has ever happened to me
but it was nice having tons of pics... always ncie to go back and look at them
marriage by definition is between opposite sex partners.
What, "In a relationship" doesn't cover it? Who the hell cares what kind of relationship these people are in. Keep that crap to yourselves. The world doesn't need to know how gay you are, just like the world doesn't need to know how straight I am.
They act like they are owed something for their "lifestyle".
marriage by definition is between opposite sex partners.
And who defines it that way? The Church? Government laws made decades ago?
If religious groups want to prevent LBGT couples from marrying, fine. That's called freedom of religion. But that the government, which by defintion should be secular and open, prevents gays from marrying is absurd. For that starters, they don't get the countless financial advantages associated with marriage. Second, they don't get the right to fully enjoy their sexuality.
How a country that claims it supports freedom can oppose gay marriage, which is a personal freedom par excellence, is beyond me. Especially the Republicans, who keep shouting there should be freedom for all are hypocrits. The right to have a gun? Sure. The right to marry someone you love? No, God forbids that.
In what century are we living?
Wake me up when they add "Second-Wife" and "Sister-Wife."

Put it to the people and I guarantee a constitutional amendment defining marriage is between a man and a women would pass easily...nuff said.
Comparing the right to own a gun and gay marriage is ridiculous.
Some of you need to leave your small towns where everyone is the same, white, god-fearing sheep. I can't believe some of you bigots.

The irony in this statement is too much to ignore.
And who defines it that way?
The right to marry someone you love? No, God forbids that.
In what century are we living?
1) God.
2) No, God created the institution of Marriage.
3) We're in the year 2011, which is the 21st century.
Because God is timeless, so also are His laws, which are the very laws of creation itself. Our own evolution as humans has no affect on God.

Speaking of bigots. Did you just profile everyone who disagrees with gay marriage as living in small towns, white, and god-fearing sheep?
I bet you can find Black, Mexican, Asian (and others) people who are not god-fearing, and live in big cities that still disagree with gay marriage.
As for the God-fearing sheep comment. Thank you. :-) If you properly recognize me as God fearing, and as one of His sheep, then I'm representing myself properly as a Christian. Because God is the almighty, and I am indeed a part of His flock. Jesus is the Good Shepard after all. And He said He would leave the 99 to seek out the 1 who is lost.
You can be that one, if you choose.
What took so long? Oh, that's right, our country is run by bigoted old men (in Congress).
Where did you learn about Capitalism? Oh, that's right, in the CCCP.
Anyway, I say good for them. Anyone who genuinely believes facebook relationship status is a driving force for LGBT rights should seriously have their head examined. Where's gay marriage in California and all the other states? Where's women serving on the front lines of war as footsoldiers?

Jerreece, I too am a sheep, and part of His flock! Preach it!

1.) So far it has been defined that way by all these bigoted humans. But as years pass people's minds are opened, and soon it will be defined that way no longer.
2.) Marriage isn't from any one religion. It is something that has existed in multiple cultures that are untouched by your religion for thousands of years.
3.) You're right, it is the year 2011 in the 21st century. And at this point I think it's safe to say that it's time for people to stop depending on some possibly nonexistent god and start depending on themselves.
@Jerrence and Captainm, let me ask you this. Did god give man the ability to reason? Did god give man the ability to make his own choices? Did God elevate man above the other creatures of the Earth by giving them these gifts? Did god send his son Jesus down to Earth to give man forgiveness for all his sins? Does God accept all men who are willing to allow God into their hearts, to repent for their sins?
Then why the hell do you care whether a man and man get married? God gave ALL men and women of this Earth free will, it's something that is at the heart of Democracy in the West. If it's a sin, let them burn eternally in hell, have their flesh eaten by worms and torn apart. As long as you stay true to your faith, you will be delivered and if those poor souls ever do repent for their sins, if they ever do accept God into their hearts, then they will be delivered same as you.
You can't take away a gift given to man by God, even if God says it is a sin. God allowed man to make his own choices, make his own mistakes, and sin. Their redemption is in Jesus's hands, not yours.

Unless of course you worship the god that pre-dates Christianity in which all are told to "do as ye will, harm ye none".
We could have world peace if Christians would just read a god-damn history book!
Put it to the people and I guarantee a constitutional amendment defining marriage is between a man and a women would pass easily...nuff said.
Actually, most countries where such a referendum was held accepted gay marriage. In fact, the ones with the highest HDI's all did so. Odd, isn't it?
And I can name hundreds of things that would be rejected or accepted in a referendum that should be avoided at all cost. Your point being?

You are defending a religious point of view. Again, it's a religious institution's right to ban gay marriage. Freedom of religion is a good thing.
But when the state, a secular institution by definition, is influenced by religious views, a line is crossed. I believe in freedom, which is the right to do everything that does not harm others. In what way does loving another man or woman hurt anyone?
Besides, 'God said so' is not a rational argument. In fact, it's not even an argument at all (google the definition of argument please). Thus, using it in a debate is pointless.
Put it to the people and I guarantee a constitutional amendment defining marriage is between a man and a women would pass easily...nuff said.
Just like when the majority voted to crucify some dude claiming to be the son of god 2000 years ago?
Christians of all people should know that the popular idea is not always the right one. Jesus wasn't exactly preaching a popular message in his time, that is if you even bothered to read about who Jesus was. Maybe you are just too busy skimming through the old testament to find passages that justify your bigoted opinions.
I'm curious, would you even know what Jesus's greatest commandment of all was? Sometimes it takes an atheist to remind Christians what it is they believe...lol

It's impossible to remind them what they believe. For starters, Christianity doesn't have a clearly defined set of rules. After all, the Bible is mistranslated, misquoted and was written largely by people that hadn't witnessed the events described.
More important perhaps is that the Bible was never meant to be 'the Word of God', but is instead a set of stories with dubious meanings open to interpretation.
Christians believe whatever they choose to read in the Bible, which is more related to culture than to religion.
I'm not actually trying to change anyone's mind, I'd much rather burn in hell listening to great music around awesome people than be stuck in eternity with annoying people like that. I became an atheist for a reason lol
Ironic how a country (America) founded by atheists (or, at the very least, deists) is now the Bible-toting country and many of the countries in Europe are now very atheist.
I'm kind of tired of religious arguments (from reading the comments). Unless you follow EVERY. SINGLE. MESSAGE of the Bible, you are the architects of your own religions falsity and irrelevance. Doing otherwise automatically means that you consciously are picking and choosing which passages are literal and which are symbolic, which suggests a non-religious origin to morality. The fact that you're arguing for an anthropomorphic universe notwithstanding (a feat of arrogance that is so crushing I shudder every time I think of it), religion has always been accepted insanity. There is absolutely NO difference in me believing in religion X is the road to ultimate reality (what does that even mean?) and me believing in the fact that JRR Tolkien's the Lord of the Rings is divinely inspired. One could even argue that the story of the Lord of the Rings promotes greater morality than many religious texts.
It's already a proven fact that religious people aren't morally superior to non-religious people. As for gay marriage: homosexuals should just be happy with legal unions. Religion is, by its very construction, tribal and excluding.
I couldn't be happier: we're breeding ourselves into extinction and people are arguing against abortion. I'd rather have a planet full of gays and lesbians adopting the unwanted orphans of the world.
Okay, I'm done.
marriage by definition is between opposite sex partners.
No it isn't. Marriage, by definition, is a property arrangement between one man and several pieces of property (women). Both also must be of the same race.
But wait a minute... we changed that... we've evolved from those archaic days. Marriage is a word with a meaning that is inherently individualistic. To each their own. Each individual decides what marriage is to them and them alone. Nobody has a right to force their definition of marriage onto others.
As such the only logical conclusion is that anyone can call whatever union they have "marriage" as nobody owns the word and its definition. It is to be respected by an inter-subjective consensus and this inter-subjective consensus ought to be empirical, logical, reasonable and rational.
The end conclusion is that there is no same sex marriage or opposite sex marriage. There is only Marriage and it is whatever you make it to be in your own private life.
Using God as an argument is invalid because God also gave everybody CHOICE! I take a neutral stance on this as it does not affect me one way or another.
God didnt give us a choice here. It's stictly prohibited by God! It's considered a sin in God's sight! Dont twist scriptures.
So gays want rights to lots of shit yet when Christians want to not be stereotyped most (
1And at this point I think it's safe to say that it's time for people to stop depending on some possibly nonexistent god and start depending on themselves.
You can't see God so hes nonexistent? You can't see the wind yet it is here. You have a little pamphlet about how to use windows 7 and you trust it and use it for some of the items. The Bible is a book that describes things yet you don't want to read it? If God doesn't exist why do people choose to be atheists against God? Miracles happen every day. lives that should have been lost and saved. EVEN IF God didn't exist then wouldn't it be better to live a lie about being good and not killing other people and following the ten commandments and loving others and believing in a lie that some day we will go to heaven and reap the rewards for essentially being good?
Oh snap here we go.
I think it's good that they added civil unions.
I think that's a good alternative to marriage for homosexuals for tax purposes and whatever else.
But marriage... yeah that is a church institution that for some rleason the government latched onto. I say let churches say whether someone is married. But for non-religious purposes let the government define civil unions for hetro and homo sexuals.
