Facebook Launches Tool for Reporting Suicidal Behavior

- By - Source : Facebook

Facebook has teamed up with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline to offer help to those with suicidal thoughts.

It's not uncommon for someone who is depressed or feeling suicidal to use sites like Facebook, Twitter or MySpace to express their emotions. This week, in an effort to help those sharing such thoughts on Facebook, the social networking giant has announced a partnership with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The company yesterday revealed the partnership, which aims to provide suicidal people with an opportunity to have a private chat with a trained crisis representative from the Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Available to Facebook users in the United States and Canada, the service Facebook users to report any suicidal comments they see posted by a friend to Facebook using either the Report Suicidal Content link or the other report links found throughout the site. The author of the comment in question will then receive an email from Facebook providing them with a link to begin a confidential chat session with a crisis worker and encouraging them to call the NSPL.

Speaking to CNet in an interview, Lidia Bernik, associate project director of the Lifeline, said that the The Lifeline has been working with Facebook since 2006 "to basically reach out to individuals who are flagged or reported for suicidal content." Bernik said that a lot of users have said that they feel more comfortable talking over text or chat as opposed to on the phone and said the partnership with Facebook is "an attempt to reach people in a medium where they are most comfortable."

Dr. Regina Benjamin wrote in a guest post on Facebook that more than 100 Americans commit suicide every day and in the past year, more than eight million Americans 18 or older had thought seriously about suicide. She encouraged people to learn the symptoms of mental illnesses so they can do their part to help.

"I ask everyone to help by learning about the symptoms of mental illnesses and substance abuse, the warning signs of suicide, how to stand with and support someone who is in crisis, and how to get someone you care about the help they need," she said.

I have mixed thoughts on this but it sounds mostly good for the depressed people out there.

For some reason, when I tried to think of someone I know of who has suicidal tendencies, all I came up with was "Nokia".

You will be surprised, i think after people get over, oooo lets see what happens, people will start using it properly.

Good on them, a lot of people need help and never have anyone to talk to.

Suicide is not a mental illness, but mental illness or chemical imbalance can cause suicidal behavior. There are many reasons people commit suicide, mental illness is just a small fraction of why people decide to take their lives.

BTW: God says that people who commit suicide burn in hell. So don't do it....

Most liberals/goths/anarchists either don't believe in god or hate god, so threats of damnation shouldn't be a be a deterrent.

Think you might be a little off there in saying that liberals don't believe in, or, hate God. Typical conservative spin/disinformation, trying to make everyone who does not subscribe to your ideology out to be the anti-Christ. You would be well served in getting a quality education for yourself so that you can understand the world around you.

Reason why people use FB while they re depressed is because thats where their friends go so clearly they are looking for emotion support from friends which will do a better job than a retarded so called professional anti-suicide person.

They will sell this info to drug companies, so suspects will be forced into taking their anti-depressants.

Can't wait to abuse this...I am going to create a bunch of fake people on FB and say they are all suicidal.
If I'm mad at one of my friends for an hour I may have to report them as suicidal. This will be AWESOME!

The problem is that a lot of people don't actually know how to deal with someone who's feeling that way. These counselors have years of experience and know what to say, and, more importantly, what *not* to say. I agree that people posting this kind of stuff on Facebook are crying for help/some kind of intervention from friends and family, but it's a very delicate situation and it scares a lot of people. If any one of my close friends divulged these kinds of emotions in a Facebook message, I would feel completely helpless. Obviously not to the point where I wouldn't at least try and help them through it, but I would be very freaked out and worried that something I say or do might make the problem worse.

It's important to keep things in perspective. Life is transient, and everyone will die. The whole death thing is not a matter of if, but when. Also, you have to have faith that the Universe will unfold as it should, and any force that would give us stupid humans any real say in anything important would have to be insane. It might seem important, but in the overall scheme of thing, everything will turn out as it should. The graveyards are full of irreplaceable people, as the saying goes.

But, more to the point, unless you're completely inept, and I'm sure you are not, someone close can be very helpful if they are not afraid to be, and have faith in their ability. Humans are basic creatures, with basic needs, and we all understand them. Because you're close to them, you aren't going away when you get off the phone, and that's important, because, being primates, humans are not fond of being alone, or feeling alone. Also, I'm sure you know that if you can get someone to laugh, everything after that gets much easier. Empathy is important, and a gift (and curse) but even without it, common sense can still be helpful. Make someone feel less alone, give them a greater perspective (by using yourself as an example of how insignificant we are), give at least the impression you understand, and be willing to work on them with the problem, and you'll have a pretty good chance of success. If not, the Sun will still be fusing hydrogen tomorrow, that person will be somewhere else, and Universe will unfold as it should. If we do our best, normally good things will happen, but not always. When they don't, it's just not how it was supposed to be.

Also, a pet can make a HUGE difference in someone's life, especially a baby (kitten or puppy). Something dependent takes our minds off ourselves, and on the dependent creature. When it's a cute cat (yes, I'm partial to felines) that snuggles up, starts purring and falls asleep, you have another reason to stay on the Earth, and feel a lot less lonely. Plus, you'll probably have less problems with mice :-P .

may be better than facebooks current way of dealing with suicidal posts, aka banning their account so they could think about what they did on facebook to get banned and punish them self for it.

But the facebook community has ways of providing support for suicidal users. If you notice someone making suicidal post, then provide support by "liking" their post.

They should develop a tool for cheating behaviors. 80% of Facebook's people would get caught by this.

Unless you live in the Swiss Alps, drink the finest, purest water known to man, and only eat the most natural, healthy food possible - you are in fact committing suicide. You are given the choice and chance of a longer live, that you PURPOSELY end prematurely by ABUSING it with toxic chemicals, behaviors and environmental factors.

So God and I have a little debate it seems - If he was so divine and perfect, he would've written the book himself, in a universal language and wouldn't be such a hypocrite.

It would be fun in a sick way if facebook decided that those suicidal people should not infect the "sane" facebook users, and kicks them off facebook.

Also, the people I have met that don't use facebook and instead go on the old fashioned way to keep in touch, they seem to be the happiest, so, maybe it's not a sick fun but indeed a solution. For non-facebook-ers, a LOL is indeed a laugh with voice out, not just a smile if even that.

Everyone now becomes a Facebook certified psychiatrist?
They should really keep their noses out of our lives and not
convert their users into snitches.
What's next; report any crimes of other users you (think) you are aware off ?
Or cheating ?
Or 'imoral' behavior ?

The new FBI... FaceBookInvestigator.

Well, I think if you are stupid enough to actually be on Facebook, you deserve all of what you mentioned above, don't you think?

Oh and by the way, there's already been plenty of people getting caught for crimes, and marriages broken cause of Facebook. Not cause of any code, but cause of other people sniffing into other's business. Isn't it what Facebook is all about?

A lot of people who use Facebook are insecure about themselves, even if they don't know it. That's the prime reason why they are on Facebook. They need to get the approval of as much people as possible to justify their miserable existence, without realizing that is not the right solution to their inner problems. Simply said, I would call it the Attention Whore Syndrome. That, or they're just sheeps following the herd, cause Facebook now became a society 'standard'.
