For those of us who don't have the luxury of sniffing armpits and basking in the gnarly breath clouds of thousands of Times Square New Year's Eve attendees, there's now an app for that. Seriously, there's now an app for the New Year's Eve countdown thanks to Toshiba and Countdown Entertainment.
Now available for the iOS platform (free, App Store) and the Android platform (free, Android Market), "Times Square Official New Year's Eve Ball App – 2011" allows users to submit their New Year's photos to be voted on by friends and family on Facebook. The favorite photo may then be selected to be seen on the Toshiba Vision sign atop One Times Square directly beneath the Waterford Crystal New Year's Eve Ball.
Additionally the app offers information about the Times Square New Year's Eve Celebration event such as its history, current news, weather, photos, relevant maps and the LIVE Show schedule. Users can also watch live streaming of the events in Times Square leading up to New Year's Eve. There's also a highlight promo and other exclusive content, a customizable Toshiba Countdown Clock, and even an option to send a "kiss" postcard.
"Join millions of revelers around the world to celebrate New Year’s Eve 2011 LIVE," reads the app's description on iTunes. "The Official Times Square Ball App is your exclusive access to be part of the activities in Times Square as you watch the LIVE co-hosted official show featuring A-List musical performances, celebrity appearances, first Times Square Wedding, hourly countdowns and the midnight Ball Drop!"
The official app also adapts to the local time zone, accesses Twitter, and even supports check-ins for Facebook Places and Foursquare. Ultimately the official app provides a safe haven for those who want ot be in Times Square but just don't want to deal with bad BO.
