Forget iPhone 17 — iPad Pro's Tandem OLED display could be coming to future iPhones

Most people who've used the newest iPad Pro can agree that the screen is beautiful. That's because the iPad Pros use Tandem OLED panels. LG Display makes these screens for Apple, and apparently, it really wants Apple to incorporate the technology into future iPhone models.
Doing so would improve the look of iPhone screens, which seems like a no-brainer for Apple. However, the company has been reluctant to make the jump to a new screen tech for its flagship devices.
However, a new report from Korea (via GSMArena) has emerged suggesting that Apple may incorporate Tandem OLED panels in the 2028 iPhones. This would mean the iPhone 20 (or iPhone XX, or perhaps something else entirely, like how Apple changed its naming conventions for iOS.
Currently, both LG and Samsung make iPhone displays. Obviously, LG would like a bigger share of Apple's display production or even become the sole supplier for displays by the time the 2028 iPhone models arrive.
The reports indicate that LG holds 348 patents in the U.S. for Tandem OLED displays, which would make it a key company for anyone seeking to develop a screen utilizing this technology.
What makes Tandem OLED displays good?
These displays improve brightness and extend the lifespan of the display, two things phone makers (and buyers) need. They are also more efficient than other OLEDs and LCDs, which can help extend the battery life of smartphones.
It's hard not to want a screen with a better picture, greater durability, and improved power efficiency.

How will Apple integrate Tandem OLED displays?
The report says Apple won't use all three layers in iPhone 20 models. Instead, the company will only use the blue subpixels.
Red and green subpixels could remain on a single layer, a more cost-effective solution than using all three layers. With new technology, there are always trade-offs, and in the case of Tandem OLEDs, price is the drawback.
