From keeping tabs on where I put my keys to making sure my dad has arrived at his destination overseas, I can’t tell you how Apple’s AirTag has been clutch for all sorts of things. It really is one of the best GPS trackers around. My only complaint is that we’ve been stuck with the same model for nearly five years. Well, it’s finally getting an update.

Apple just announced the AirTag 2 with substantial hardware upgrades that ultimately make it way more precise and effective. One of the new pieces powering the AirTag 2 is Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip — which, just like the one found in the iPhone 17 lineup, makes it even easier to find.

There’s still more to the AirTag 2, including expanded Bluetooth range and a louder speaker, but the best part is that Apple’s keeping the same $29 price point. Here’s everything new with the AirTag 2.

Even with all of the upgrades, the AirTag 2 still features the same unmistakable design as before. This new model, however, is manufactured with significantly more recycled materials — including 85% recycled plastic, 100% recycled rare earth elements in all magnets, and 100% recycled gold plating.

At the heart of the AirTag 2 is that new Ultra Wideband chip. It offers improved Precision Finding that Apple says is a 50% improvement over the previous model. This makes tracking down its location when you’re nearby even better, as it utilizes haptic, visual, and audio feedback. Speaking of audio, the internal speaker is 50% louder, making it audible from twice the distance. If that’s not enough, the upgraded Bluetooth chip also expands the range at which it can be detected.

For the first time ever, you can tap into Precision Finding on the Apple Watch Series 9 or later, so you can do it all from your wrist. In addition to using the Find My app to pinpoint a location, Apple’s also expanding software support for the AirTag 2 by introducing a new iOS feature that lets you share it with third parties. People already put AirTags in their luggage, but now you’ll be able to share their location with airlines for assistance when a bag is lost or delayed.

I think Apple’s decision to keep the AirTag 2 at $29 is a good move, especially since it's one of the most underrated gadgets around. If you’re looking for more savings, you can get a better deal by picking up a four-pack for $99. You can place an order right now through Apple's website, with general availability expected later this week.
