The PlayStation Portal is finally useful — and it’s also $20 off for Black Friday

With Black Friday deals already in full swing ahead of the annual sales event, now is the time to get gaming peripherals at a discounted price. To that end, one of the least understood yet very popular PlayStation accessories is currently on sale.

Right now, you pick up a PlayStation Portal for $179. This $20 savings might not be monumental, but it’s still a good deal, and one that matches its previous sale price. Now that you don’t technically need a PS5 to play games on this handheld, it’s more useful than ever. Here’s why you should consider buying the PlayStation Portal if you haven't already.

PlayStation Portal is a popular PS5 accessory that allows you to mirror your console and play your games just about anywhere (assuming you have a stable Wi-Fi connection). Thanks to the new Portal system update that recently launched, you can now stream almost 2,800 PS5 games via the cloud, even without being tethered to a home console.

Over in the UK, Amazon is also discounting the PlayStation Portal.

When it launched, the PlayStation Portal was a paperweight when it wasn't connected to a PS5 console over Wi-Fi. Now though, thanks to an update, you can stream a library of almost 2,800 games directly on the device, and the list of supported titles includes many of the best PS5 games, like Cyberpunk 2077, God of War Ragnarök, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Astro Bot, Hogwarts Legacy and more.

Of course, you’ll need to own these games digitally to stream them on the PlayStation Portal, or they must be included in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog. Speaking of PlayStation’s premium subscription service, you’ll need to be a PlayStation Plus Premium member to access cloud streaming on your PlayStation Portal.

As for the device itself, the PlayStation Portal is like if you broke a DualSense controller in half and then stuck an 8-inch touch display in the center. Don’t let the awkward design fool you, as this dedicated remote play device feels great in the hand thanks to those familiar DualSense grips. The Portal also only weighs 1.1 pounds, which allows you to comfortably play games on it for longer. Both the White and Midnight Black color options are on sale.

While the PlayStation Portal isn’t the PlayStation Vita 2 some had dreamed of, at least it now allows you to play thousands of games via the cloud. At this reduced price, it’s definitely worth considering.
