Mass Effect Gets Picked Up For Hollywood Movie

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Sadly, you won't be able to choose your own conversations in this one.

Games are becoming ever more deep and layered, thanks to better writing and character development. RPGs such as Mass Effect are already set up for a Hollywood-driven space opera, and now it's becoming a reality headed to the silver screen.

Legendary Pictures, whose successful co-productions include The Dark Knight, 300, Clash of the Titans, The Hangover and Watchmen, has acquired theatrical feature film rights to Mass Effect. The producers are in discussions with Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, Thor) to draft a screenplay based on the fiction game series. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce the film with Avi and Ari Arad. BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk will serve as executive producers, as will Mass Effect executive producer Casey Hudson.

BioWare’s epic science fiction series takes place in the year 2183 and follows Commander Shepard of the SS Normandy who leads a team on a mission to defeat an ancient alien race that invades the galaxy every 50,000 years, wiping out all organic life.

“Mass Effect is a tremendous property ripe for translation to the big screen,” said Thomas Tull, Chairman and CEO of Legendary Pictures. “Mass Effect is a prime example of the kind of source material we at Legendary like to develop; it has depth, compelling characters and an engaging back story. This coupled with Avi and Ari producing and the skills of a great team adapting the screenplay, are the start of turning this smash videogame based property into a successful feature film.”

“We are thrilled to be working with Legendary,” said producer Avi Arad. “EA and BioWare are terrific partners who have created a brilliant piece of fiction with a universe filled with amazing aliens and technology. More importantly, though, they created a parable whose conflicts mirror the ones we currently face in our own world. This story emphasizes the need for all cultures to learn to work together. All this magic is presented in a fast paced action-adventure that makes for the best kind of movie experience.”

“At BioWare, we’ve always thought of Mass Effect as having the depth, emotion and plot twists perfectly suited for an adaptation to a motion picture,” said Casey Hudson. “With Legendary and Avi and Ari Arad attached, we believe that the Mass Effect movie will be an extraordinary entertainment event that realizes our vision for the franchise and thrills fans.”

If that means no Uwe Boll, that's certainly encouraging.

Let it not be before Mass Effect 3. I know that i has the potential to be great but in all honesty most if not all game->movie adaptations went horribly wrong.
In any case let Commander Shepard be played by Milla Jovovich, redhead version :D.
Who said Shepard was a man?!?!

erm the entire franchise is based around the male shepard just look at the front covers....

could be done very well, the games have a film quality to them at the best of times, would be interesting to see aslong as they stick to the storyline of the games

Both good games, there is allot of story there. I just hope Hollywood does not screw it up like they did Doom and change the story line to what they see as politically correct. Remember Doom the scientists opened a portal to Hell itself but the movie hacks did not like that so they said it was a a virus.

Quote :Commander Shepard of the SS Normandy
It's SSV Normandy.

Furthermore I am kind of against making a movie of this game. I am afraid that they will ruin it...

Whatever happend to a HalfLife Movie? Id rather see a movie based on that game. Id Always thought Jeff Goldblum would have made a great Gorden Freeman, but now he's getting kind of old...

th_at, everything you typed is absolutely bullshit.
Video games have dull plots? Maybe a red plumber saving a princess is still stuck in your little mind, but many, many titles over the years have had stories as, if not MUCH more engaging then what you see on the silver screen. Go back to sleep for another 15 years.

If they have a story that does not involve commander Shepard this would be good. Maybe the relay 314 incident or something (just one example). I guess it'd be cool because they could use one of the Matriarchs in the game and keep the voice from the original game, without setting a canonical sex/appearence for Shepard. At least with Halo, it's easy to hide the MC's voice behind his helmet, but commander Shepard would have to show his/her face at some point in the movie or it wouldn't work.

Actually your wrong in your outlook. What makes a good movie is when people are able to consider the main characters as real people with real hardships, not some faceless soldier behind a mask. Peter Jackson even brought that to light himself during the intial talk of a Halo movie. If you want a Halo movie that would be worth a damn it would HAVE to begin and soley stay with MC from the time he was a young boy being taken to Reach to start the Spartan Program. Basically if the movie was to have a chance it would have to be based of the book, "Fall of Reach". Only after following that story line could they continue on with the story archs that follow the video games and people be able to have a clue as to what is happening.

For ME, they'd need to stick to the main betrayal/conflict between Saren and Shepard and not fool around to much with trying to squeeze in to much of the fodder of him forming his team to take on Saren and the conflict with the councel. To much detail can be just as bad as not enuff.

I don't understand why there are so many negative comments on here, I think this has the potential to be a great movie, especially considering the credentials of those already listed to be involved. And being a huge fan of both games, even if the movie sucks, it's not going to ruin the game for me...it'll just be a disappointment. And as to those arguing for a female shepard / no shepard...get over it... Firstly, female shepards were thrown in as an interesting option, but the way the story is built as well as the vast majority of mass effect media, show Shepard to be a man. And since it's a movie they're obviously only going to be able to show one possible outcome of the game...but again, I think there is a bit of a "default" storyline, and many of the events along the story happen whether you are paragon or renegade.

Unless it would be a redhead who likes to shoot first and never bother asking questions later, using mass abilities and a shotgun, with steamy scenes between said redhead and a blue alien, I'm not interested.
I like to play the bad guy (or gal in this case). I can't help me. :)
Maybe that's why I like KotOR so much (seriously, double sided lightsaber wins every time).

If it's not the way I played, I'm not interested. :)

As long as they don't have Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson play Commander Shepard, I'll be happy.

So I just went onto IMDB to look at the voice actors for ME1...they could totally use the voice actors to portray the characters in the movie...assuming the voice actors could also act on screen...it seems like most of the characters in ME were designed to resemble the voice actors...at least the human ones...

Maybe with BioWare execs looking over their shoulders, this one will break the mold.

They haven't started casting yet. What you found was the Video Game cast. Note the "VG" in the page. Do another search and you'll see one dated 2012 that's in production with VERY little details so far. That's the right page to look at.

Sorry, I meant I was looking at the cast of voice actors for ME1...I just wanted to take a look and see if any of them might be suitable for the movie.

I agree that this would be a great movie, and they should continue working on the halo movie as well. Those are two good universes that deserve to come to the "big screen". But there is another even more deserving.

I admit it will be hard to pull off, but I wish blizzard would turn Diablo into a series. (I said series, not movie) The first would obviously be the start of the Sin wars, the plan for the stones, binding them to the stones, etc. Not sure how Diablo one would fit in, probably best as the start of the second movie with the first act or two of Diablo 2 to finish. "Finish" the third movie with the end of Diablo 2, would be nice to see the breaking of the world stone in Imax/3D/big screen. They could easily turn out three movies that would make tons of money, all they have to do is make them.

Actually, this brings up a good point...I'm operating on the assumption that they are making a movie out of the FIRST game, and not trying to combine the first two, or, god forbid, trying to do both games and invent a story for the third... Anyways, assuming that's correct, does this mean they intend to do the whole trilogy?

I would certainly hope so. My first thought was that this should be a trilogy even though they aren't saying it up front. If the first movie does well enough we should expect two more releases.

Invent a story for the third game in the movie would literally scrap all the decisions made in game, regarding sparing certain persons, how you helped someone, which romance you took, if any, etc.
Unless the story in the movie was completely neutral in relation to game decisions.
