iPad Getting Paid OS Upgrades After 4.0

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Major updates after 4.0 will cost extra bucks.

Apparently iPad owners will face the same OS upgrade fees currently suffered by iPod Touch owners. A report from AppleInsider reveals that iPad developers were recently given access to the iPhone SDK 3.2 Golden Master (GM), the first solid build of the development kit that actually supports the iPad device. However developers quickly noticed the accompanying agreement saying that major reference releases after 4.0 will cost a few bucks.

But there's a pot of gold at the end of the Apple rainbow: one major update will be on the house, namely OS 4.0. "Apple will provide you any iPad OS software updates that it may release from time to time, up to and including the next major iPad OS software release following the version of iPad OS software that originally shipped from Apple on your iPad, for free," the company said.

Apple goes on to provide an example, saying that if the iPad originally shipped with iPad 3.x software, Apple would then provide any iPad OS software updates it might release up to and including the iPad 4.x software release. "Such updates and releases may not necessarily include all of the new software features that Apple releases for newer iPad models," the company added.

Last summer iPod Touch owners were forced to cough up $10 in order to upgrade to OS 3.0. The updated firmware unlocked the device's dormant Bluetooth technology. It also added the Spotlight universal search, the ability to copy and paste, and a landscape mode for the virtual keyboard.

OS 4.0 is slated to arrive sometime in 2010. The iPad will ship with OS 3.2 this Saturday.

I'm only going to buy one if it can be jailbroken anyway, in which case, updates will be free.
I have friends with jailbroken iPhones and it's truly like putting wings on a wingless bird. Yes, I know.

lets hope they give the ability to multi-task b4 4.0 comes out!!

Yeah, paying for upgrades sucks. I don't normally defend Apple in any way, but Apple's got to make money somehow (and if you won't buy new hardware, they'll get you with software).

of course there isn't a large price margin for their mac's ;) they sell them for as cheap as they can. making only a buck or two per mac sold.

If you don't like it, don't buy one of their products. At least Apple is continuing to upgrade the OS for their 2-3+ year old iPhones and iPod touches.Google and T-Mobile still haven't, and may never, release Android 2.0 for my first-gen G1/Dream..

Apple is making money by charging their customers far more than the hardware they sell is worth. The fact that iPod owners had to pay Apple to access hardware that was already included with the user's purchase was and still is beyond the pale. What makes this worse is that the iPad is a lackluster device, so demanding customers to pay to upgrade will only drive more potential buyers away.

This is pretty lowlife of them- to build a feature into the unit, not let you access it when you buy the unit, then charge you later on to let you then access the feature.

Another reason to use Android: free upgrades and community support. Thanks but No Thanks. Apple products are far better than anything HTC or any other Android maker produces. And the last time i checked HTC was being sued by Apple for like 20 copyright infridements. Why would i want a cheap immatation product when i can have the real deal.

Reality Distortion Field running at MAX! It's too bad there are a plethora of Android devices that stomp all over the iPhone in nearly every category.

Last I checked, Apple was being sued by Nokia, and as of a couple days ago another company for multi-touch infringements. Sounds like Apple is making cheap imitations to me...

Pretty much. I've got my eye on what ASUS can produce, along with the Adam and the Marvell $99 tablet.

O and Apple was the first to make a personal computer along with the first OS! And of course we can't forget the iPhone just recently got MMS! HAHA... Looks like Apple is yet again, playing catch-up. Something that they are really good at.

I believe you have it ass-backwords. Apple is making cheap imitations.

Well of course. Advertise your products and beat down the competition. Raise the prices and enforce strict rules on your products. O and make it all shiny, that's important. don't look under the hood though.

Actually the text merely says that updates AT LEAST through 4.x will be free. No mention whether updates past then will be free or not. Try reading the referenced text instead of blindly copy-pasting an article from somewhere else.

Of course, I forgot that this is Tom's Guide, and that's pretty much the description of any "news" piece on here.

For the record: I am posting this from a ThinkPad, that does not and will not ever have an Apple i******* connected to it.

(somewhere behind the sceens at aPple): So how can we make a few extra bux off our new iPad? Milk it, milk it... I GOT IT! We'll launch it with the iPhone OS and then make them PAY for the iPad OS it should have come with in the first place. We'll include some of the features we know about but didn't tell them were in it and they will greatfully thank us with some more money at a later date. BRILLIANT!

(In the rest of the world): not again!

I am very surprised that one might have to pay for updates. It is usually a complete new version that one pays for.

my god, what a rip-off. They put a feature in the device, but then lock it just so they can charge you extra for it later? not to mention they're forcing customers to pay extra for security updates and other firmware fixes that are a necessity to keep the device working properly. Apple is such a garbage company, but the iZombies will shell out for anything with a fancy logo

It is just another form of the Apple tax, and Apple acolytes will gladly pay it as long as the get an Apple sticker with their iPad which they can't slap on the back of their cars...

I have a Blackberry which is great with the chat function, otherwise pretty much useless. I also have an HTC android phone which I probably used for all of three days before I gave up. The iPhone 4 is brilliant. Does everything I hoped it would do. I also have the iPad and I use it for a few hours every day. For all you haters out there, please buy your Android/Windows Mobile/Blackberry etc and put up with all the crap that brings with it. I used PC computers from 3.11 to XP and ever since I switched to Mac I don't even want to touch PC's with a stick.
