14. Conclusions

Though both are upgrades to previous models, the 40D and the 1Ds Mark III offer new features to make your photos better. The cameras’ sensor upgrades are most welcome. The 14-bit analog to digital systems and DIGIC III image processors up frames per second rates significantly, especially when sensor megapixel counts are taken into account. The dust removal systems fall into the "it’s-about-time category" and the 3 inch live view displays are the answer to many a photographer’s prayers.

The 800 pound gorilla in the room is Nikon’s newly announced D3. With it, Nikon has muscled its way into what was Canon’s exclusive 35mm full frame sensor territory. Now that Nikon has dropped one shoe, it will be interesting to see where they go next in the 35mm full frame DSLR derby.

These are interesting times in a number of ways and it’s great fun to be sitting in the middle of the DSLR camera market as key players take off the gloves and begin a price-performance based battle for the hearts and minds of amateur, prosumer and professional photographers.
