Nintendo Announces 3D Handheld, the 3DS

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Nintendo last night made a brief announcement about a new DS it plans to show off at E3 in June.

Nintendo will reveal a new 3D DS, the 3DS, at E3 this year. Scheduled for retail-launch some time in the next year, Nintendo says the device will allow users enjoy games with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses.

The announcement was short and sweet and the only details offered were that there will be no need for glasses, we'd learn more at E3 and the 3DS would hit shelves before March 2011.

"We wanted to give the gaming industry a heads up about what to expect from Nintendo at E3," Ken Toyoda, chief spokesman at Nintendo said in a statement, according to the New York Times. "We'll invite people to play with the new device then."

Though there's little information from Nintendo, we do know that it will boast backwards compatibility for DS and DSi games. Speculation suggests the 3DS could incorporate motion-sensing technology, higher resolution displays and a 3G SIM for over-the-air downloads (including ebooks).

The news comes just after Nintendo launched its DSi XL, a larger version of the DSi. We're also in the midst of a 3D craze, when TV makers are rushing to push out 3D televisions and stations like ESPN and UK-based Sky Sports are launching 3D channels for watching sporting events.

Intriguing....

I think Nintendo has just solidified portable console gaming dominance for the next several years...again.

Very cool idea! This thing will catch on like wildfire.

Just imagine, even if only one kid gets one for Christmas, they bring it to school showing off Mario 'popping out' of the screen EVERY kid will want one.

This from the company that won't release Wii HD?Do you like graphics or not Nintendo?

For Ninty, it's about price over performance. I expect they've found a way to make 3D not as heavy of a price tag as putting an Nvidia Tegra in every Wii!

Virtual Boy? Nah, this should be much better, and you probably won't have to stick it to your face. They've had 3D-arcades forever (usually involving mirrors and whatnot). I'm sure Nintendo just found a way to smash it down into a flat screen.

Speaking of 3D arcades, I gotta buy a pack of D-batteries and fire up this bad boy again sometime: http://www.miniarcade.com/coleco/zaxxon.htm

Well it wont actually look like this. Without 3d glasses the effect of 3d on screen will look like a hologram. Nothing comes out at you, instead it just appears to have depth like you're looking into a glass window with a 3d world behind it.

Playing mario like this will still look amazing though, if not better. I dont really care to have objects fly into my face. I like the more subtle 3d look, admiring the lush backgrounds and depth to it all.

If the 3d effect in this case uses head tracking technology, it might work for you Toddosan :-) and other people who have problem with one eye.
Here are some video exemple of 3d effect with head tracking:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5QSclrIdlE
The last one is a DSiware!!!
Let us know if you think it could work for you.
Personally, looking at these videos with one eye close, I can still see some kind of 3d effect.

Enough with the stupid crysis line! It is overly worn out and shows that you don't have any wit to come up with a new funny line.

Wait...Nintendo have taken ordinary 3D polygon graphics (exactly how a 360/PS3/PC have rendered graphics for decades), hooked the camera up to a motion controller, and claimed the first "3D graphics without the need for 3D glasses".*Sarcastic clap for Nintendo*It seems anyone will do anything these days to capitalize on the whole '3D' rage at the moment. Sadly, the average consumer will probably buy into this bollocks. -1 respect to Nintendo

Maybe I miss understood you but you are talking like they are advertising good old polygon 3d... when they are actually talking about stereoscopic 3d. Whey else would they say "3d without glasses"

Or maybe 3d using head tracking or motion tracking... but surely not the plain old 3d :P

I'm already sick of 3D. It's not even cool or neat, it's just annoying.

Keep one eye closed then

Great Idea as usual... One thing that set Nintendo aside from others, is that they are after innovation and less concerned about graphics...

For some reason, I feel that Nintendo's starting to head the ways of Sega, what with constantly slapping on additional, separate features on the same base hardware... Will the CD-DS be next?

Will the 3DS take off, possibly, but they thought that about the VirtualBoy, and we all know how that turned out!

You're wrong, it IS plain old 3D. The only trick here is using head tracking to control the position of the game camera, giving the illusion of something more sophisticated than actually is.

To relate this to stereoscopic 3D in any way is absolutely wrong.

yeah about that. hey let me help you out with reading, since it seems that you missed something.

its ok, i'll help you out since maybe you need to read the article yourself

Update: And no, I did not say that "Can it play Crysis" comments are going to result in a ban. I said that offensive comments is grounds for comment deletion and even banning. I noticed too 2 or 3 commenters are already taking this way out of proportion. I already talked about free-speech above. And, no, we're not going to go crazy banning "funny" comments that have some ground to stand on.
[/citation]

now let me point out something from that very article that applies to you!
[citation]A free-speech forum doesn't mean an open invitation to be a jerk.[/citation]

thanks and have a wonderful day. i'm glad i could educate you on how to use the forums.
