Banish weeds and revive your garden with this clever trick

Spring is finally here, and while it brings new growth to revive plants and our lawns, it also marks the peak season for those unsightly weeds.

Between March and May is the crucial time when annual weeds begin to germinate, and perennial weeds start to be active. Not only do these weeds quickly take over your lawn, ruining your lush grass, but they are notoriously difficult to remove because of their large central taproot. What’s more, they can smother and suffocate nearby flowers and plants, making it hard for them to thrive and grow well.

Luckily, gardening expert and TikTok influencer, Ish, has shared his simple hack to tackle the growth of weeds before they start to take over your lawn. And instead of removing them while they’re young and throwing them out, you can repurpose them instead to use as a fertilizer around your garden. Win-win!

How to repurpose weeds with this clever trick

In his TikTok video captioned, ‘Clever Gardening Tips for Garden Weeds’, Ish begins by stating that “springtime means growth for weeds, but it’s the best time to start getting rid of them because they’re quite young and vulnerable”.

In addition, he then suggests digging up baby roots by using a small spade or simply pinching and pulling out from the root, without the need for chemicals.

But the catch is, you don’t have to throw weeds out straight away, as these young weeds are packed full of nutrients, which is ideal for fertilizing other parts of the lawn or garden.

Ish explains, “What I like to do is pinch away all of the foliage, get rid of the roots, fill a pot of water, shove all the foliage in, and let it break down over the next few weeks. It will release all of the nitrogen stolen from the soil into the water, which you can turn into a liquid feed.”

So it just goes to show that young weeds are surprisingly easy to eliminate in March, making it the ideal time to act — so don't delay.
