6 Scorsese movies were just added to Netflix and Paramount Plus — here's what I'd stream first

There's a surprising number of Martin Scorsese movies that just got added to two of the best streaming services. When looking through the lists of the 29 new shows and movies added to Netflix and 108 movies that were just added to Paramount Plus, I noticed that quite a few of these were films from the legendary New York filmmaker. I also noticed overlap between the lists; some movies were being added to more than one platform.

With so many movies available to watch from such a great director, I decided to put together a list so you know exactly what's available to stream right now and where you can stream it. I've even put the movies in the order I think you should watch them, just to add that level of curation you can't get anywhere else.

'Taxi Driver'

"Taxi Driver" stars Robert De Niro as New York City taxi cab driver Travis Bickle. A former Marine, he takes a job as a night shift driver due to his crippling insomnia and loneliness. Unfortunately, the nightlife of New York doesn't do much for his mental state, and he starts training to kill Charles Palantine (Leonard Harris), a Senator who is running for U.S. President, and the boss of Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), a campaign worker with whom Travis has a short-lived relationship.

This movie is a masterpiece. It deservedly earned multiple Oscar nominations, including one for De Niro's performance. But the figure of Travis is complicated; he attempts to kill a politician due to mental illness, yet ultimately channels his rage to protect Iris (Jodie Foster), a 12-year-old prostitute whom Travis befriends and ultimately saves. So, is he a hero? Or a lawless vigilante? The answer isn't simple, and you'll have to watch "Taxi Driver" to figure it out for yourself.

'Raging Bull'

"Taxi Driver" wasn't De Niro and Scorsese's first partnership. They had previously worked on the movie "Mean Streets" together. It also wasn't the first Scorsese movie to earn De Niro an Oscar — that would be "Raging Bull."

This sports biopic stars De Niro as Jake LaMotta, the former middleweight boxing champion of the world. It follows LaMotta's life from his early career in the 1940s, all the way through his post-boxing career fall from grace and ends with him picking himself back up again as an entertainer. It's a dark portrait of a complicated, rage-filled man, which makes it an excellent companion piece to "Taxi Driver" if you do a Scorsese movie marathon.

'Shutter Island'

"Shutter Island" might be Scorsese's most underrated film. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio as U.S. Marshal Edward "Teddy" Daniels, who heads to the Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane on Shutter Island to investigate the disappearance of Rachel Solando (Emily Mortimer). With him is his new partner, Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), but not everything is as it seems.

Once they start their investigation, psychiatrists Drs. Cawley (Ben Kingsley) and Naehring (Max von Sydow) are uncooperative, despite their patient being the missing person. She's not the only one missing, either. A Dr. Lester Sheehan disappeared from the island right after Solando. As the movie progresses, Teddy starts experiencing intense migraines and flashbacks, as well as vivid dreams of his wife, Dolores (Michelle Williams). He then reveals she's long dead, killed in a fire set by arsonist Andrew Laeddis, who Teddy thinks is also on Shutter Island.

I put this movie here, if you plan to watch all six, because I think tonally it fits more with "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull." Those are also neo noir films, like "Shutter Island," which feature one of the best actors in the world at the top of their game, portraying a complicated, dark individual. I almost had this in between the other two, but ultimately, I couldn't split the two De Niro performances and his arc from Oscar nominee to Oscar winner.

'Goodfellas'

Watch On

"Goodfellas" is widely considered Scorsese's greatest movie ever made, and its loss to "Dances With Wolves" at the 63rd Academy Awards remains a headscratcher. Adapted from the nonfiction book "Wiseguy," it chronicles mobster Henry Hill's (Ray Liotta) rise through the world of organized crime in New York, which hits its high point with the Lufthansa heist of 1978, orchestrated by Irish-American gangster Jimmy Conway (Robert De Niro).

Look, there isn't a bad place to slot in "Goodfellas" if you're watching a bunch of Scorsese movies. But I like putting it here because, while it features De Niro and explores another dark, complicated man, there's an element of nostalgia to this gangster movie that doesn't exist in the other three films I've highlighted so far. The remaining two films also invoke that nostalgia, so it made sense to lead into them with "Goodfellas," as it's the best example.

'The Aviator'

"The Aviator" stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes, the eccentric Texas film tycoon turned aviation pioneer. This movie is a traditional biopic drama of epic proportions, and chronicles Hughes' life from childhood to his public fight with Maine senator Owen Brewster over the Hughes H-4 Hercules flying boat. It also features one of the biggest budgets of any Scorsese movie, at $110 million.

This was the first Scorsese movie I ever saw in theaters, and you could tell it was big-budget just from the visuals. "The Aviator" is certainly not even in the same universe as the neo-noir "Taxi Driver" on that front. It also features an incredible cast, including Alan Alda and Cate Blanchett, who, along with DiCaprio, earned Oscar nominations for their performances.

While DiCaprio is excellent as the eccentric Hughes, it's not his performance that sticks with you after watching this movie. Cate Blanchett (fittingly) steals the show as Katharine Hepburn, and after you watch "The Aviator," you'll understand why she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress that year.

'The Wolf of Wall Street'

Watch On

"The Aviator" is big-budget, but "The Wolf of Wall Street" isn't far behind. And, like the Howard Hughes biopic, this black comedy biopic also stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a charismatic figure.

"The Wolf of Wall Street" stars DiCaprio as Jordan Belfort. A notorious stockbroker, the movie follows Belfort's rise from the ashes of Black Monday to become a multimillionaire Wall Street finance bro running pump and dump schemes from his firm, Stratton Oakmont. Another Scorsese movie, another portrait of a complicated man.

Ending your six Marty movie marathon here ends things on a high note, which is a big reason it's last on this list. This movie is one of the best movies of the 2010s and features what might be the best performance of DiCaprio's career. You also get incredible performances from Margo Robbie as Belfort's wife and Jonah Hill as the drug-addled neurotic Donnie Azoff, both worth the price of admission.
