From the opening moments of the first episode of “Veronica Mars,” the title character announces herself as a hard-boiled detective in the classic noir tradition. Delivering a steely narration about the corruption of her fictional California hometown, Neptune, she brandishes a knife to rescue a hapless victim from a local biker gang.

The twist? Veronica (Kristen Bell) is a 17-year-old high school student rather than a middle-aged man with a drinking problem. That contrast is exactly what makes the show work; as the diminutive, unassuming Veronica takes on the rich and powerful, she bests nearly all of them. She is a crime-solving dynamo who always has a quip handy, yet she remains a young woman still figuring out her life. These two sides make her one of TV’s most fascinating characters.

In its initial three-season run from 2004-2007, “Veronica Mars” was a cornerstone of the WB/CW era of teen-drama dominance, setting the stage for witty, complex TV teens for the next two decades. Veronica belongs in the pantheon of iconic detectives of any age, from “Columbo” to “Poker Face” lead Charlie Cale. With the classic first three seasons now streaming on Netflix, it is the perfect time for fans of the current crime-drama boom to discover all 60-plus episodes.

‘Veronica Mars’ weaves multiple complex mysteries

Creator Rob Thomas was a pioneer of the season-long mystery, playing out a single serialized story over the course of each of the show’s first two seasons. This was an especially impressive feat given the lengthy network TV schedules of the time. “Veronica Mars” masterfully sustains suspense, intrigue, and surprise over 22 episodes, all while giving Veronica a variety of episodic cases to solve along the way.

The slightly shorter third season switches up the formula with several briefer arcs. Even when the individual mysteries vary in success, however, Veronica and her circle of friends and enemies remain consistently entertaining to watch.

The overarching mystery of season 1 is so compelling that it is almost tough to follow. Veronica is determined to find out who killed her best friend, Lilly Kane (Amanda Seyfried), despite the fact that someone has already confessed and been imprisoned for the crime. Veronica’s father, Keith (Enrico Colantoni), is the only one who agrees with her; he lost his job as Neptune’s sheriff because he refused to buy the official story. Now a private investigator, Keith employs Veronica as his assistant, though she often takes the lead on their most dangerous cases.

The suspects in Lilly’s death encompass nearly everyone in Veronica’s life, including Lilly’s brother and Veronica’s ex-boyfriend, Duncan (Teddy Dunn), and Lilly’s boyfriend, Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring). Like any good hard-boiled detective, Veronica often falls for the wrong person, leading to complicated romances and even more complex friendships. But for anyone who wins her loyalty, Veronica is a die-hard advocate they can always rely on.

Veronica makes her cases personal

While Veronica is brilliant at dispassionately observing facts and reaching conclusions that others miss, she is never a detached investigator. After solving Lilly’s murder, she spends the second season investigating a bus crash that killed a number of her classmates — a crash that could have easily killed her, too. Because her cases involve her peers and community, she is always fully invested in finding the truth.

That sense of personal investment often puts her at risk, forcing her to make impossible choices. Often, it is Keith who feels betrayed by her methods, but the bond between father and daughter is the emotional heartbeat of the show. In a standout first-season episode, Veronica is adamant that one of her favorite teachers (played by guest star Adam Scott) is innocent of a student’s accusations. She must conduct a grueling investigation before realizing that sometimes, her dad really is the better detective.

Kristen Bell is masterful at delivering sardonic rejoinders, but she is equally skilled at showing Veronica’s emotional vulnerability with her father, her boyfriends, and her best friends, Wallace (Percy Daggs III) and Mac (Tina Majorino). Thomas deftly weaves a massive supporting cast into the fold, and Veronica frequently calls in favors from past clients to solve new crimes. This creates an immersive, lived-in world with one of TV's greatest detectives at the center of it all.
