I’ve always had a soft spot for survival thrillers, as there’s something undeniably addictive about watching characters pushed to their absolute limits, fighting against nature, time or a relentless pursuer. There’s a particular thrill in these films since you’re not just watching a story unfold, but you’re calculating alongside the characters, holding your breath when they take a serious risk.

Over the years, I’ve scrolled through countless titles, some promising adrenaline and delivering little, others exceeding every expectation. In this list, I’ve rounded up five of the best survival thrillers currently streaming on Netflix. These are the ones that kept me glued to the screen and reminded me why I can’t resist a good fight for survival.

‘Fall’ (2022)

I never thought I was afraid of heights. That is, until I watched “Fall,” a survival thriller that puts you 2,000 feet in the air with absolutely no escape. There’s something deeply unsettling about how it traps you alongside its characters, forcing you to feel every dizzying moment. Honestly, part of me is relieved I didn’t catch this in cinemas back in 2022, because I’m not sure I would’ve handled it. Now that it’s on Netflix, though, it’s an easy recommendation if you’re after a truly nerve-shredding watch.

“Fall” follows Becky (Grace Caroline Currey), a former thrill-seeker struggling after a tragic climbing accident, who is persuaded by her friend Hunter (Virginia Gardner) to scale an abandoned 2,000-foot radio tower in a remote desert. After reaching the top and scattering ashes, disaster strikes when the ladder collapses, leaving them stranded with limited supplies and no easy way down. Cut off from communication and far from help, the two attempt increasingly risky methods to escape.

‘Everest’ (2015)

A good thriller can be gripping on its own, but when it draws from real-life events, it becomes far more nerve-wracking. That’s certainly true of “Everest,” a 2015 survival thriller that throws you straight into the dangerous ascent of the iconic mountain. Many will already know about this towering peak, but for anyone unfamiliar, it’s the highest in the world, rising to 29,031.7 feet above sea level.

“Everest” dramatizes the real-life 1996 Mount Everest disaster, following two commercial expedition teams led by experienced guides Rob Hall (Jason Clarke) and Scott Fischer (Jake Gyllenhaal). As climbers from around the world gather at base camp, they prepare for a coordinated ascent to the summit. Delays, overcrowding, and difficult conditions complicate the climb, but several members reach the top. During the descent, a sudden and violent blizzard strikes, leaving many stranded high on the mountain.

‘Don’t Move’ (2024)

The central hook of “Don’t Move” is instantly compelling. In most survival thrillers, the protagonist might not be stronger than the killer chasing them, but they still have the chance to run or think their way out. But this main character has no such advantage. Forced to endure her situation while nearly completely immobilized, every moment feels heightened. This is where the movie truly excels, crafting sequences that are almost unbearable, with tension so thick you may catch yourself holding your breath.

“Don’t Move” follows Iris (Kelsey Asbille), a grieving mother who retreats to a remote forest where she encounters a seemingly kind stranger named Richard (Finn Wittrock). After gaining her trust, he reveals himself to be a killer, abducts her, and injects her with a paralytic agent that will soon render her completely immobile. Escaping into the wilderness, Iris must keep moving as long as she can, using whatever strength and awareness she has left.

‘Beast’ (2022)

I wouldn’t go as far as saying “Beast” is destined to top anyone’s favorites list, but if you’re in the mood for a stripped-back survival thriller, it gets the job done. The runtime is lean, the stakes are clear, and the action is front and center throughout. With a dependable lead at its core, it delivers a satisfying rush, especially if the idea of Idris Elba facing off against a lion is all the convincing you need.

“Beast” centers on Dr. Nate Samuels (Elba), a recently widowed father who travels to a South African game reserve with his two daughters, hoping for a meaningful trip together. They reunite with Martin (Sharlto Copley), a wildlife biologist and old friend, who guides them through the reserve. During their visit, they encounter the aftermath of a brutal attack linked to a rogue lion that has begun targeting humans. After their vehicle is wrecked, they become stranded in the wilderness.

‘Nowhere’ (2023)

I pride myself on knowing what’s new on Netflix, especially now that it’s basically part of my job. Even so, “Nowhere” slipped under my radar when it hit the platform in September 2023. This Spanish survival thriller turned out to be so intense and immersive, carried by a phenomenal lead performance. It may not be perfect, but from the first scene to the last, it kept me completely engaged and invested in its harrowing journey.

“Nowhere” focuses on Mia (Anna Castillo), a pregnant woman who, along with her husband Nico (Tamar Novas), attempts to flee their war‑torn, totalitarian homeland in hopes of reaching safety abroad. The couple hides inside a shipping container bound for Ireland, but they are separated before the journey truly begins. A severe storm sends Mia’s container overboard and adrift in the open ocean. Inside, she must fend for herself and her unborn child using whatever limited supplies she has.
